if you can't find a way to make works that are artistically compelling, challenging, and advance the form in some way feel meaningful - then that's your failure, and the larger market's failure. but it's not the failure of people making the games. i wish more people understood that.

That impact truly can't be understated. As Canadians, we forever live under the U.S.' shadow. But BioWare showed we were more than that. Their progressive values. Their innovative storytelling. Their endless creativity. That impacted the entire world, but it especially meant so much for Canada.

One thing that's so tragic about this is how little this means to the greater Canadian consciousness. Many love BioWare but most are unaware of it. They put out the greatest piece of blockbuster media in Canadian history in the Mass Effect trilogy. Most of the country never heard of it.

Last I'll post about this, but Elon Musk disagrees with me. This means I am onto something, and I feel more valid in my opinion than ever.

Why do we keep on doing this? Praising a 'small core team' for a game with 1100+ people in the credits is incredibly misleading. This PR narrative hurts, hides the massive shadow workforce of outsourced developers and testers, and sets impossible standards for actual indie teams.

Star Wars: Galactic Racer was made by a core team of 75 people. "What we wanted to do was keep that core small, smaller than perhaps you might have done in the past, and scale capacity and capability with what we call distributed development." https://bit.ly/4hT02qg

looking at ocarina of time remake footage it's kinda funny that i, as someone who has historically never understood the mainstream annoyance at navi, am looking at these little text quips they gave her and reflexively rolling my eyes and going "oh come on shut the fuck up"

I shit you not, every single day I read about retro video games and discover the names of 5 more video games I've never heard of that the mere description threatens to rip my fucking face off. I'm set for life. If the AAA industry wants to burn to the ground, I couldn't possibly give less of a shit.

the stupid thing was: the consumer games press DID have unethical marketing mouthpiece relationships with the industry. the e3 / spike tv / actiblizz / doritogate conglomerate and the payola-dominated masculine corporate culture had a stranglehold on what got made and how it could be discussed --

Trump is grossly abusing his power to raid the home of Rep. Omar. He has repeatedly attacked her, Somali Americans, and Minnesotans. @Ilhan has done nothing to justify a pre-dawn raid ahead of the election. I stand with my sister always. Quoting The Associated Press

I’m ok. Make no mistake: this is an attempt to target political enemies and weaponize federal law enforcement. For ten years, Trump has targeted me with baseless lies and smear campaigns. This is just the latest escalation in his campaign of political intimidation. I will not be silenced.

Nintendo's message to Switch 1 owners this fall is very different than it was a year ago. 2025: If you have an original Switch, we have versions of the new Metroid and Pokémon for you, but you can't play the new Kirby and Zelda spin-offs 2026: If you have an original Switch, no new 1st party games

In Retrospect "Focus M" was the Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story of AAA video games. There's just some shit you can't do with a straight face any more for at least 10 years.

Issues with the art style aside, I am deeply disappointed that they are barely changing the gameplay in the OoT remake. That is my real issue with it. Adding nothing but a jump button, camera control and QoL features is just boring IMO

"It’s not about ‘being a reviewer’ anymore. It’s not about telling people what to buy, it’s about providing spaces for people to discuss what (and whom) they support" Try to tell me this is not how *everything* works now, this is prescient as fuck

Saying that YouTubers who obbsessively pour over every frame of a trailer and wildly speculate are a more credible source than *actual journalists* tells me all I need to know.

I think one of the reasons I prefer the GTA 3 era of the series is that it has a unique, stylized look. The more realistic the games have gotten, the less interesting they've been. GTA VI looks visually impressive, but sterile. A lot of money thrown at a lot of incredibly safe decisions.

I'm sure it's gonna sell like hot cakes and review well. I can't wait to play it myself, and will probably love it. But it's been 13 years, and AAA is still upresing game design ideas from a bygone era. This problem is broader than GTA. Personally I think it's the silent killer of our industry.
