No joke. I think this is the most important video I have ever seen about mobile games. This guy breaks down how this game psychologically profiles you, and makes the game harder or easier in order to show you ads

very excited to share this update about bringing AT to the IETF! last week we uploaded two drafts to the IETF datatracker and today we heard that we’re approved to host a Birds of a Feather at IETF 124 (the formal meeting towards establishing a working group)

I have written many healthcare stories, but never before have I written about my own health. I decided to do so after learning one of my drugs costs nearly $1,000 a pill and just 25 cents to make. What I found was an incredible story of discovery and exploitation. www.propublica.org/article/revl...

propublica.orgThe Price of RemissionWhen I was diagnosed with cancer, I set out to understand why a single pill of Revlimid cost the same as a new iPhone. I’ve covered high drug prices as a reporter for years. What I discovered shocked ...

happy first birthday to Bluesky, and what a year it's been! with every day, the need for an open network that puts people first becomes increasingly clear. we're glad to be building this with you. after all, the heart of a social network is the people.

A great thing about Wikipedia is that you can see the full edit history of every article. So if you’re interested in investigating bias on there, you can see exactly which edits introduced every change, at what time. Internet archive and other sites also have good independent captures of Wikipedia.

If an effort by currently powerful bad actors succeeds in corrupting Wikipedia, this would show up in the record of edits on articles. These edit records would themselves become a fascinating historical artifact for future generations.

Bluesky has been flooded with automated reply bots - they'll offer a sort of confrontational opinion as a reply. They're pretty convincing and we all need to train ourselves to not reflexively reply to all responses until we check Dead giveaway is new acct, few followers + original posts

Each day is “what the left/right are saying” segments (exactly what one would want from a political news summary) followed by “my take” where the site founder makes a good faith effort to sort it out.

We had to get in on the video action too — Bluesky now has custom feeds for video! Like any other feed, you can choose to pin these or not. Bluesky is yours to customize.

Mike is a great follow

I really, really don't want to do this, but let's do a bit (just a LITTLE BIT) of fact checking about what Zuck said on the Joe Rogan podcast, because this is something I not only followed closely, but also spent time *talking to the actual people at Meta who dealt with this* which WAS NOT ZUCK.

Does our country (or any country) really need a single person who is "head of state"? Suppose the U.S. Constitution were amended to eliminate the roles of POTUS & VP with the powers of the Executive branch distributed among the cabinet.

National elections for the most powerful cabinet positions (e.g. SecDef, Attorney General, SecState, Treasury), select the rest some other way (e.g. have congressional committees pick them). We could dispense with the drama & concentration of power that comes with having a single person at the top.

"But a single leader is needed to execute quickly in a crisis and cut through gridlock", you may be thinking. And that would have been a compelling objection, a decade ago. After all the news in more recent times, I'm pretty sure the benefits of such a change outweigh the risks. Decentralize!

Wonder if news editors are going to realize people knew about an actual coup an hour-plus earlier on bluesky than twitter. Hearing a lot of that rumbling from old friends still in the legacy content mines today.

Launching bluesky in today's social media world seems a bit like the napster launch in 1999, but without napster's copyright issue. A weapon the recording industry deployed against napster back then, other than lawsuits, was hiring some firms with the express goal of clogging the network with junk.

Brian Tyler Cohen@briantylercohen.bsky.social

It’s kind of incredible how long we’ve been forced to accept social media platforms that are openly hostile to their own users, suppress political content, and throttle third party links.

Charlie O'Keefe reposted

We shouldn’t want a single platform out of fear of “bifurcating” the ecosystem. Twitter has already splintered into multiple platforms and in the long run that’s good. We should want to enable seamless conversations across platforms, instead of the current norm of sharing screenshots across them.

Brian Tyler Cohen@briantylercohen.bsky.social

I get the pushback to Bluesky in that it further bifurcates our media ecosystem. But at this point, Twitter’s content moderation is so nonexistent and its verified users so extreme that the choice becomes either move away from Twitter or be subjected to straight up 4chan nazi bile on a daily basis.

To put it in sports terms, watching team bluesky as a software nerd is a bit like watching a group of your favorite college players turn pro and pull off a season of upsets, shocking the established juggernauts, and now they're making a run at a world championship. Like the Miracle on Ice of tech.

Yay, The HN algo strikes again! But this setting should be at the top of each thread. 1. It's not nearly as useful as a static setting. You often want to see the hot replies, then see the newest replies, etc. 2. It's *probably* also good for the conversation that people see the same default view.

Bluesky@bsky.app

📢 1.95 is rolling out now (2/6) With this release, you can now display replies by “hotness,” which weights liked replies that are more recent more heavily.

i used to be much more "😌 to each their own" about this but i feel like meta is actively duping users into staying in their closed ecosystem, now that all of us here (users, devs, etc) are bringing an open social internet into reality coincidence that threads has plans to launch ads early '25?

Social media is in desperate need of innovation. Meta is only letting you have a slice of control over what you see because Bluesky is here building for you.

We wrote on Saturday about how Meta is going all-out to meet the threat of Bluesky: wapo.st/3OrYxBj Today they took another step— finally allowing users to set their default feeds to a chronological “following” feed.
