We wrote on Saturday about how Meta is going all-out to meet the threat of Bluesky: wapo.st/3OrYxBj Today they took another step— finally allowing users to set their default feeds to a chronological “following” feed.

They did, but it was a toggle at the top of the app in a dropdown (took two taps) and it always reset to the for you page if you closed and reopened the app. It was a clear push away from that feed.

they gave the option of a "following" feed a while back but it wasn't "sticky" -- i.e., if you left threads and then returned later, you'd be back to the algorithmic feed

Hahahahahahaha…. Gee I wonder what made him decide to “test” this? Like King George “testing” whether the colonies might want a little representation with their taxation….

Why can’t we get this same energy for Instagram? I understand wanting to balance growth and promoting well made content, but it’s clear from bsky that maybe we should be rethinking how to approach feeds entirely.

Or Facebook. Facebook has become useless since algorithmic feeds. I log in maybe once a month to check in on my 78 year old mother and her friends. I haven't seen a post from a person I actually know in years. "Social" media my ass, zuck.

Fascinating. Kind of like what Instagram was before being demolished by Meta. A fun chronological feed of pics from friends/following, then defaulted to some weird algo but you could switch back to chrono...then the algorithm & ads killed it dead. Meta is just so dumb

Even when they started with ads & sponsored pages you could select “most recent” which they then took away. I spend more time blocking ridiculous groups that I absolutely don’t want to join than I do reading posts from my friends & the groups I’m already in. Don’t get me started on “most relevant.”

FB used to do that. Then the feed changed, but you could still make custom lists. Then they took that away, & the casino-ization of the feed just kept getting worse. People made the bargain to be the product. Most people still will.

Screw Threads and Zuck. Threads users begged for these options for months and Meta ignored these pleas. They are only offering them now because Bluesky is a threat. Too little, too late. Had a once in a generation opportunity to replace Twitter and squandered it by thinking they knew better.

I didn’t close my threads account yet so i went in settings to see if anything appeared that wasn’t there. Couldn’t find anything. I recall the many tutorials I read in the beginning on how to set political preferences and such. No more patience for that mess!🙄

Too little, too late. Besides, even if Meta offered me money I will not go back to a company whose CEO congratulated a fascist criminal out of fear for losing revenue just like those German industrialists who worked with the Austrian corporal that cause quite a stir in the last century.

Just deleted my 20 year old Facebook account, never installed Threads, and plan to get off Instagram in the next year. Let’s all aim to bankrupt corporate social media!

They're not trying to "meet the threat", they're trying to give just enough to retain users, seeing as how they're losing folks to Bluesky as well. On the latter though... anyone else remember when "chronological" was the default on Facebook?

Following has existed for...Like a year? It only defaults back to For You a few times a month. But it doesn't work very well. Threads are completely invisible in the Following feed. Yes, Threads doesn't display threads properly.

Who has the best tutorial for custom feeds on Bsky for people who aren't familiar with terms like "repo" or "getFeedSkeleton"? I would prefer not to give my Bsky password to a third party. I basically want "what is the most liked/reposted stuff from people I follow"

Never go back. Zach is part of the oligarchy scheme to control information so they can retain the power and control over what citizens see and hear. We need to create our own information ecosystem, especially within TikTok and Bluesky. Podcasts too. Time to think out of the box. Move the lanes.

It’s Zuckerberg, and his AI, data mining, brain rotting algorithm that no one wants. Is there any surprise that he’s forcing stuff on people that they don’t want? He started FB as a rating system for “hot college girls”.

I don’t think I know one person who actually cares about that element of this. The vast majority of people just want to post. I wonder what percentage of people on this site even know what you’re talking about…I’d guess it’s under 5% with under 1% caring about it.

And that's what's really beautiful here. People want to *use* it because it's better, nicer, more personal. The ecosystem around it will continue to grow because it's open, you own your own content, and it can be enhanced and even repackaged by third-parties.

😂 IDK which "these people" you have in mind. All normies are clueless. It's certainly not "I know I don't care". It's "I have no clue what gobledugook you just wrote above, and have zero desire to find out". You "Distributed" and "Protocol" stopped everyone mid-read and they swiped away. 😂

Too little too late; Zuck has long since driven Meta's users away, over the cold edge of the trust thermocline. bsky.app/profile/gari...

Had a tech bro tell me this morning that I need to go away and learn about the Trust Thermocline, to understand why emotive products like Twitter fail slowly then suddenly. I pointed out I am fully aware of the Trust Thermocline. On account of being the chap who created it every.to/p/breaching-...

Don’t believe Zuck’s lies. They’ll remove this option and go back to force-feeding you the posts they want you to consume the moment they have dominance again, just like they did with Facebook.
