Hello, new followers! I'm a children's book editor with 24 years in the business & author of THE MAGIC WORDS: WRITING GREAT BOOKS FOR CHILDREN AND YOUNG ADULTS and five picture books. I post about books, writing craft, politics, publishing, NYC, my 5-year-old son, & things that make me laugh.

Via @shelf-awareness.com, I'm envious of the author who receives the prize for the Bollinger Everyman Wodehouse Prize for Comic Fiction: "a jeroboam and a case of Bollinger Special Cuvée, the complete set of the Everyman's Library P.G. Wodehouse collection, and a pig named after their winning book."

* “MY DECISION—“ * “I have no cards left to play.” * “We’re falling short.” * “Pretty pretty pretty please?” * “Is there ANYTHING I can say….” * “I hate to ask” -> asks * “[Politician name] STUNS” What other manipulative text openings am I forgetting?

Children’s books and YA literature. The quality has always been there, but the diversity of voices & styles & subjects available now is extraordinary.

This is why JD Vance follows his attacks on Acton by calling her a drunk. The inference is that all child rape victims are drunk, drugged up adults who should be ignored.

Amanda Marcotte@amandamarcotte.bsky.social

FWIW, most MAGA people probably believe Amy Acton’s stepfather raped her. But they think being a rape victim Is disqualifying. I get this from my family. They believe I was raped in college. They just use that as their reason to call me crazy and say my judgment is untrustworthy.

I'd love for Congress to look at these situations where you buy a basic economy plane ticket and if changes are necessary, you get only a partial travel credit back. How is that legal -- to not get the full value of what you paid for in some form?

We have to think about collapsing Trump poll numbers and Rs turning on him the same way we'd think about finally being able to corner a rabid raccoon in your garage. Good news: he's out of options. Bad news: he's a rabid raccoon.

For this week’s @nymag.com, I profiled Lance Oppenheim! We went deep on the making of You Can See Everything—how a certain actress got involved, how the shower scene happened, and how embedding with Elizabeth Holmes forced him to find a new way of working. Another older Halloween comic. I lost the old file so I recently had to redraw it, and I had a lot of fun revisiting this.

One thing I haven't seen stated in the YOU CAN SEE EVERYTHING coverage: EH apparently gave birth very shortly before they started filming? So she still had postpartum baby weight & pregnancy skin, & maybe zero sleep, & I theorize that's partly why she's so zoned out through much of the film. +

But I would bet money she was totally discombobulated half the time, as new moms always are hormonally (plus the breastfeeding & lack of sleep), and then trying to act competent & "Elizabeth Holmes, CEO" nonetheless; and that's where a lot of her strangeness in the film comes from.

Also, the moment later in the film after she's gone to prison, when Billy (her romantic/business partner) tells Nathan "She looks a lot healthier now," and he clearly means "She's lost a lot of weight" (i.e. the baby weight) . . .

That's not to say she's not playing a long game on everyone -- why, WHY, would you invite a documentarian into your home to film your first weeks with a new baby? Which are also your last weeks with the baby and your other child for like 11 years? It's shady as hell! +

Does it make sense to deport a man who overstayed a visa but otherwise has no criminal record when his deportation means shutting down a food pantry that serves meals to 7,000-8,000 needy people a month? Does choosing not to exercise discretion in his case make America greater?

Their politics are all different, but the appeal of Mamdani, Ossoff, and El-Sayed as speakers and campaigners is that they don't seem afraid they're going to get in trouble. That makes them hard to bully or even make fun of successfully.

❗❗❗Mark Zuckerberg's meta just suspended the No Kings Instagram account. I just rushed back from my local No Kings to jump on this. Bottom line, would be helpful for all pro-No Kings folks to elevate the issue and help us get the word out about No Kings today. The Nerd Reich strikes again.

I’m in a Brooklyn thrift store playing Fleetwood Mac’s “Rumours” in full and I love hearing other shoppers likewise humming or singing softly along. (Who can resist?)

Email did to white collar work what the washing machine did to housework: creating as many problems as it solved. See, as Ruth Schwartz Cowan shows in More Work for Mother, washing machines made washing clothes much easier, but in the process, it also shifted cultural norms...

I would form a company to create beautiful & strange art in the ad spaces on the MTA. I’d wrap a bus in a painting, put a whole short story in the overhead blocks on a subway car, hide a mystery in codes embedded in station art, run micro-films on the digital screens everywhere.

There’s a reason It’s Called “No Kings,” not “No King.” No Kings is about more than just Donald Trump, it’s about fighting against the billionaire class & the corporate mega-donors who’ll still have power after he’s gone. We’re going up against them THIS SATURDAY, 10/17: No Kings: Vote Early!

The short version of this is: the stupidity machine stole the books, then used the stupidity machine to build a stupid machine that cannot be fixed no matter what you do to pay out the 1.5 billion they have to may for all they stealing. Which sounds like a lot until you realize it's SO MANY BOOKS.

The exciting part about the Anthropic vibe coded settlement backend is that no matter how many times you fix your information, the same broken bits will reappear. It will be total madness. The entire backend is broken because, AS THEY TOLD ME ON THE PHONE, they know it is because they vibe coded.

The Sound of Music for Tax Purposes (it’s very boring music)

Adam Bonin@adambonin.bsky.social

In the spirit of the phrase "resident alien for tax purposes" and me thinking Resident Alien sounds like a movie, add "for tax purposes" to the end of a movie title: That Thing You Do For Tax Purposes!

I donate blood every two months or so, & the receptionist at Brooklyn’s NY Blood Center not only remembers me but asks if I did my pre-donation ritual (getting a burger at the BK around the corner). Being “known” in even this little way is so nice! It’s one of the things that keeps me coming back.

The mundane sadness of the online trivia player: I wrote one answer, second-guessed myself, and then put in another answer; and the correct answer was, indeed, my first one. Thank you for your sympathies at this difficult time.

How long can I keep this up? Not sure, but all I want is for the London production of My Neighbor Totoro to transfer to Broadway. Let me ask you, is that really so much to ask..?

Another London dispatch: If any of you know any Broadway producers or investors, I am begging you to convince them to transfer "My Neighbor Totoro" to NYC when it closes in London in January. It is one of most enchanting, moving, heartwarming shows I've seen & I want audiences here to experience it🙏

One nice thing about working in Midtown: I can literally get a salad and tour a cool art collection in the same building on my lunch break. (This is in the UBS building on 51st St. — and so is a Chopt!)
