Attention mail-in voters: TODAY (Tuesday, Oct. 27) is the U.S. Postal Service's recommended deadline for mailing back ballots in states where they must be received by Election Day. You can also consider returning your ballot at your local election office or any available drop box instead.

The early voting blog is updated! Dems are rolling and outlook looks bleak for most Republicans in contested races. Gov's race is still up in the air and Election Day, where GOP does well, could save Lombardo and maybe others. Som perspective: thenevadaindependent.com/article/the-...

The #SaveMassEffect petition is nearing 130k signatures. Regardless of what you might think of the efficacy of petitions, there's no reason for EA to get away with this without some more bad publicity. Consider signing if you haven't already. 👇 www.change.org/p/savemassef...

I just want to name that people overcame this. Even against a stacked deck, the good fight is worth it. Win or lose, it's worth it. And sometimes the good guys win.
Bolsonaro-friendly mayors appear to be sabotaging public transport on Election Day. Buses aren’t running in Lula-friendly areas, flights and ferries mysteriously canceled. Traffic lights have gone out and people’s power cut in Salvador, indigenous people’s travel restricted

Brazil was of two huge election results today—alongside the defeat of the nationalist, authoritarian leader of Serbia: "the slate of candidates selected by protesting students had won at least 135 seats in Serbia’s 250-member legislature" www.nytimes.com/2026/10/25/w...

On Monday, I'm recording a podcast with @ketanjoshi.co. He's going to present the strong version of THE CASE AGAINST (AI) DATA CENTERS. Tech company fuckery, discarded green pledges, the rush to gas, the empty promises that AI will help reduce emissions ... all of it. Got questions?

We would save a lot of time and really get to the business at hand if we could stop dancing around the fact that what's happening with Yglesias, Neera Tanden, the Democrats and their stewards and subordinates at large, is an attempt to maintain power and wealth gained from wealth class partnerships.

To heal, there must be accountability, apology, reparations, and a recommitment to treating every human with dignity. There is so much work to be done.
ICE causes man to wreck while his children are in the car, then tries to pry his kids from his arms. They got the wrong guy. Toward the end of the video, an ICE officer says law requires the person recording to back up 25 feet and threatens with pepper spray. (There is no 25-foot law.)

Re-professionalizing and de-politicizing DoD will be crucial. And doable, as this thread with specifics shows. Add Thiel-Palantir to Musk-SpaceX and Luckey-Anduril review. Courts martial for boat bombings. Problem is, it’ll take political will, and there’s at least two more years of damage to go.
To-do list for SD Mayor Pete and DSD Uncle Frank (and the transition team): - at 1201 rip down the stupid fucking sign, regardless of whether Congress has officially changed the name (not looking good for the 27 NDAA lol) - at 1202 issue orders to rename all the confederate bases back*

American political institutions are outdated compared to peer democracies in ways that make us less resilient to authoritarianism. Trump couldn’t have amassed authoritarian power without: - The electoral college - The two party system - An out of control Supreme Court - A useless U.S. Senate
Its resilience rests not on politicians’ restraint but on the robustness of institutional arrangements, writes Frances Lee

Alpha male wolves basically: - Follow the pack’s top female’s leads - Take on the most punishing parts of the hunt - Make miles long journeys to feed their pups - All for the “privilege” of going kamikaze to help females/pups escape if there’s trouble “Alpha” aint what these chuds think it is!
And the whole "alpha" thing is also a myth. Wolves are cooperative, not hierarchical. Don't know if guys like this understand how insecure they sound.

“Moral panic” is the right term here, because those raising the alarm make no effort to ask: -how frequently is this happening? -is it more frequent now than in the past? -what do the children of these parents say? -what, exactly, constitutes “cutting off”? -how often are parents disowning children?

On deep level these people are just rejecting society itself. They do not want to participate. They do not care how society has benefitted and continues to benefit them. They don't care what happens to anyway else.
“I’m old. I’ve paid my home off,” said Ray Warner, a 72-year-old Akron resident. “Why would I pay property tax?” Across the country, homeowners are asking the same question and revolting against property taxes at a scale not seen in a half century.

Under conditions of fascism, "polarization" is not bad. It is, in fact, imperative, lest government of the people, for the people, and by the people, not perish from this earth.
Collective deliberation leads to large, reductons in affective polarization Deliberation requires that people use good information to “weigh” competing arguments through civil and diverse discussion The impact was strongest among the most extreme www.cambridge.org/core/journal...

This is a consequence of the impunity given to Israel and directly connected to Israel's mass assassinations of Palestinian journalists in Gaza. All perpetrators must be brought to justice, and mainstream media must end its complicity with this brutal, anti-free press regime.
Masked Israeli settlers attacked Palestinian villagers on Friday, setting olive groves on fire and slinging rocks. Caught in the attack was Post photographer Heidi Levine. “They just kept kicking me and kicking me, like probably 50 times,” Levine said. https://wapo.st/4yt6dHY

will try to answer these in a piece next week but for now i will say that part of the *point* of court expansion, in my mind, is to create a disequilibrium — a potential race to the bottom — that will force a truce.
Calls for expanding #SCOTUS are entirely (and increasingly) understandable. But as today's "One First" explains, there are at least four difficult questions that those who support expansion should have to answer—especially as compared to other possible reforms: www.stevevladeck.com/p/bonus-257-...

Ex-boss filed a $12 theft charge against an ex-employee because she got a restraining order in response to his creepy behavior. Charge was never prosecuted, but it gave ICE an excuse to arrest and detain her. Congratulations to the 58 Democrats who voted for the Laken Riley Act. You own this.

I'm sorry but the key priority for the next US SecDef has to be extracting Elon Musk from every single thing related to US military contracting. No Musk company should receive any government contract of any kind from any Dem executive.
New speed limits on Starlink terminals, operated by billionaire Elon Musk’s SpaceX, disrupted drone attacks over Russian-occupied Ukraine, Ukrainian officials and military units said.

I’m outraged by this attack on Representative Omar. Trump and his DOJ have a bizarre obsession with tearing down Minnesota, our leaders and our communities. This latest action, even as voting has already started in Minnesota, is a transparent attempt to interfere in our elections.
