I’m not a political journalist, so was gladly surprised at the community I found here last night. To Americans anxious about the upcoming elections, a key thing we learned in Brazil that might help you: DO NOT engage with the far-right online. Don’t share rage bait. Amplify your people. Ignore them.

The bald eagle flew away with the rat and proceeded to tear it apart on the roof of a house nearby. We’re two weeks from the election!

Metaphor Watch: My wife and I almost ran into a bald eagle sitting directly in the road on the way to work this morning. The bald eagle picked up a rat and flew away—in the middle of Baltimore.

Does it make sense to deport a man who overstayed a visa but otherwise has no criminal record when his deportation means shutting down a food pantry that serves meals to 7,000-8,000 needy people a month? Does choosing not to exercise discretion in his case make America greater?

Checking the alumni group chat with friends from the panhandle. One buddy asks our friend who's an electrician how things are going restoring power east of Pensacola. "Not even close," he says, "there's no poles to connect it to."

as a satire on so-called late stage capitalism how could one beat investors pouring a trillion into a company offering to wipe out humankind

which one of your cretins made this post show up on my feed. i am on bluesky specifically to avoid these sorts of subtrivial psychodrivel slopnuggets. "can i bring a drink to an interview?" what the fuck kind of question is that? "is a hot dog a sandwich?" go look at a fucking leaf

"you're lying": no they aren't "stupid": mean, but debatable— Perspective from a STEM professor at an AI-forward university: The juice ain't worth the squeeze. There can be no positive value in using these *products*. Unethical through and through. We deserve better. The tech deserves better.

lauren@lauren.rotatingsandwiches.com

to be honest i don't think "youre lying and also stupid" is a great thing to say to scientists and engineers when they say they see some value in a software tool. not really the same thing as your boss sending you dumb emails in my opinion

A lot is happening at once and we end up crossing arguments. What looks like an argument about technology is actually an argument about particular products which exploit that technology. LLMs and NLP can democratize computing and illuminate obscure knowledge. OpenAI et al. are not doing that.

The cohort of Silicon Valley AI products before us are inefficient and unethical. Their products are capable of mesmerizingly amazing things. One does not excuse the other.

"a tool no different than a hammer" exactly! remember when the Amazon hammer manufacturing center came online and became the single worst source of pollution in the United States?

here's one of UF's Professors of AI "Art" just a few months ago I guess it's a little like a hammer, if a hammer was made from other artists' teeth

displaying passion mate concern about the systems at a university is often met by fence-sitters as an overreaction at best, mental instability at worst. I expressed concern to my director about how deeply our university is entrenching itself with corporate genAI and he told me to go to therapy

Keeping quiet to maintain decorum or social hierarchy feels like being forced to lie, and you can't make me, neener neener.

did Faine write this before or after news came out that Harry Potter adults forced the relocation of a planned undersea cable—whose new route now endangers Bronze Age human remains—simply to save Dobby's grave

Faine Greenwood@faineg.com

We should really work together, hand and hand, to focus all of our community’s poorly-suppressed and totally ruthless bullying energy on the single demographic we all agree actually deserves it: Harry Potter Adults in the year of our lord 2026

The year is 2039. Humanity has reduced fossil fuel consumption by 77%; mycelia eats through PFAS in the soil. Hope. But upon discovering upwards of 92% cows are evil, beef and dairy consumption immediately skyrockets, and the climate is doomed to bake under a pillowy film of bovine methane

apparently @hankgreen.bsky.social you can't do it without relying generative slop and getting it wrong because you're "so busy" so maybe it's best you don't do it at all

I watched the video. It was an execution. The officer cannot claim negligence or an accident because he fired three rounds into the man's head. Incidentally, the officer almost shoots his partner (and may have), as you can see the other officer suddenly jerk back after the first shot is fired.

Police murdered a Black man in the street in Madison WI today. Shot point blank in the head while on the ground, tased, and surrounded by four cops. It looks like an execution. Multiple videos circulating online. Things are about to get very bad here.

What would be super cool is if people stopped inventing apps and training robots to ruin our lives and instead invented a type of cat food that doesn't squirt ungodly gravy all over my wrist when I open the package it comes in.

ICE shot and killed a man in Houston with no criminal record who was not even their target. They pushed him off the road. And now he is gone forever. ICE is a domestic terrorist organization. We need to abolish ICE now and stop Trump’s murderous thugs.

This has been the most spiritually bankrupt celebration of anything I've ever seen and that's it, that's our 250th. We don't get to go back and redo it, this one's in the books: Temu Arch, cheesy architecture, horrible displays, AI everywhere. Far right propaganda. Jokes at our expense
