Not super familiar with this outlet and I try NOT to do "callout" posts so DON'T take this as that BUT: IMO framings like this don't help good movies, even if meaning to. "WILDWOOD" deserves to be more seen, but it also *exceeded* its financial expectations and had unique financing and distribution
LAIKA's WILDWOOD is a Box Office Bomb and Audiences Are Failing Great Movies

People truly believed that this was gonna be the End Da Warz presidency when the whole point of this presidency was to meme all the gutter bigotries of the GWOT’s origins into official policy

Yeah, this is really bad. It's good that El-Sayed distanced himself from it, but I am in awe at how Cenk's left-wing PAC managed to combine antisemitism with transphobia and pitch it as *supporting* the Democrat in this race.

There can never be another "water under the bridge" administration ever again, and part of that is going to involve shaming everyone on board with this one - voters included - as the disgusting pig racists they are

WHO WOULD WIN objectively best living conditions in human history VS. "i have to see transgenders on twitter :("
Dawg we are talking about 1966, no American white working man was suddenly getting left high and dry by deindustrialization or austerity or recession The only “radical shift in the material conditions” was “you have to let black people into your school/office/shop/apartment block now”

correct states further down the path of autocracy than us have had those autocracies overthrown by sufficiently large voting numbers recently we can do it here too
The US is not about to have a free and fair election. The state has put its thumb on the scale to favor the ruling party in multiple ways. It's a mostly free, somewhat unfair election. But still one where the ruling party can be overwhelmed by numbers. Hence the term "competitive authoritarianism."

This, but also, as a liberal I believe in freedom and human rights for all people, all around the world. That translates into rooting interests in elections where freedoms and rights are on the ballot, as they often are.
I just think Matt's wrong about this. We're at a point in our technological development where a ton of problems spill over national borders--if Flavio Bolsonaro burns down the Amazon, that will flood houses in Miami.

it does kind of seem like yglesias also thinks this is true of their own countries, and indeed he would prefer the people not participate in politics at all, and leave the hard business of running a country to the smart people (him)
Yes well it does require things like “empathy” and possessing a basic understanding that all of our lives are interconnected

That one in particular has been pretty conclusively debunked (mostly because SDI came after Soviet military spending had already skyrocketed in the late 1970s/early 1980s due to Brezhnev and Andropov attempting to "win" the Cold War after the US withdrawal from Vietnam)
Hell, there's an argument that the Soviet response to SDI was so expensive that it was a contributor to the collapse of the USSR!

Upon receiving criticism for his unilateral destruction of the US biological (and later chemical) arsenal, Nixon stated that "if someone uses germs on us, we'll nuke them." George H.W. Bush's government made similar veiled comments vis a vis Iraq in 1991. These weapons are just inferior goods.
Not for nothing are biological and chemical WMD labelled "the poor man's [atomic] bomb". The befuddling thing is why the USSR invested into them at all when it had nuclear weapons and its chief rival (the US) did as well. It really does seem to have been a case of "closing the nerve gas/plague gap"

one of my quasi-kooky hobbyhorses is that I’d regulate commercials and advertising content co-equal with any street-level enforcement. Americans get 100s of hours of years of straight bad driving myth, subconscious coding of drives you’ll never get to fulfill safely or pro-socially.
One of my Full Crank opinions is I would regulate car commercials so much more strictly. Between the "urban racetrack" ads and the "off-roading in a forest" scenes (both with miserable tiny-print disclaimers) are disastrous for each respective environment, and encode expectations into drivers.

The long-serving strongman leader of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, has conceded defeat in an election that pitted him and his right-wing party against a diverse student-led opposition movement that spent two years protesting his government.
Technology is repeatable and it is remarkable when a piece of technology is unreliable (think about how a car that functions intermittently is seen as a bad car nowadays). Magic is seemingly inexplicable at first, and it is remarkable when it is consistent(think about the praise for “hard magic”)

Very glad to hear that Elon Musk is a stickler for details on contractor – government relationships. Could come in handy later.
Musk said he restricted Starlink in Ukraine- causing fast moving drones to lose connectivity - and that he had every right to do so because of some terms of service or contract that he didn't show us. (He didn't address suddenly doing this with no warning to Kyiv.) www.cnbc.com/2026/10/24/u...
