I once trolled Mumsnet with "my 5 year old won't drink coffee unless I put 4 or 5 sugars in it, is this normal?" If you were one of the outraged mums rushing to defend my kids from caffeine - I'm not in the least sorry. It was glorious.

Years ago I gave a badly behaved student a C instead of an F in return for him egging my cheating ex's house and car. Weirdly he was then really well behaved in all my classes after that. Probably realised I'm a bit mental.

Section 28 was passed on this day in 1988. It didn’t come out of nowhere. It came from a society where 75% of people thought homosexuality was wrong. It came from a society that believed ignorance was better for children than any knowledge of lesbian or gay lives. 🧵 1/16

Is there something in the company values at JD Sports requiring at least three members of staff to be on the phone looking confused at all times?

I’m really enjoying Strange Antiquities (on Steam and, I believe, the Switch), but whenever I try to describe it to someone it falls flat: you play a shopkeeper where you don’t know what you’re selling, your customers can’t describe what they want, but… um… there’s a cat? And it rains a lot? 9/10

Emo lad I dated cancelled date saying his bat died. He was ultra goth so sounded plausible. On next meet said sorry about the dead bat & he said "no I meant my battery "

In an early sysadmin role, I'd been asked to make a large change. No-one had told me to use tabs instead of spaces. One quick regexp managed to break the DNS for several million computers. It was fixed within half an hour but that showed me the power of regular expressions.

Even back in the 70s and 80s when I could be hassled by the police for walking while trans, no one ever tried to stop me pissing in the Ladies or tried to make me change into my swimsuit among men. There is no dignity or respect involved in taking away rights I have exercised freely for forty years

When I was about 16 or so I went to a comedy hypnotism show and got up to be a volunteer. I don't think I was hypnotised. I danced like a ballerina & did the stuff he said, I'd been hiding my extroverted side my whole life. I decided not to hide anymore

This looks like the most unsurprising chart I've ever seen, but if you only read British media you'd lose your mind learning that this is the reality of it

Gashapon (or Gachapon) are vending machines found all over Japan that dispense capsules containing miniature toys and other items. There are thousands of different kinds. Here’s a thread of the best ones I saw on my recent trip. 🧵

Humans were never supposed to need to brush their teeth. Our prehistoric ancestors managed just fine before we started stuffing our faces with sugar. And other apes also manage just fine. Something needs to be done about humanity's obsession with sugar.

There was an old tweet that stuck with me: "If you can easily walk to the coffee shop but your barista has a one hour commute, you don't live in a walkable 15 minute city; you live in a theme park"

as someone who lives nextdoor to both supportive housing and public housing, i need people to understand that the best locations for both are going to be the central neighborhoods in a metropolitan area, where there is easy and reliable access to services and jobs.

I don’t normally post about charitable campaigns, but trans people have a hard enough time as it is without also being thrown under the bus by the British state. We need to do better.

Voters were wrong about Section 28. A majority backed it. Politicians pandered. LGBTQ+ people suffered for years because parties chased consensus instead of showing courage. “The voters are never wrong” sounds noble, but it’s fake humility. Sometimes leadership means disagreeing with the crowd.

“The voters are never wrong” isn’t humility, it’s surrender. It’s the politics of vibes over values. Democracy doesn’t work if parties just echo the loudest opinion. That’s not listening; it’s giving up. Leadership means standing for something, even when it’s unpopular.

There’s a gap that LLMs fill that really shouldn’t exist: that habit among tech organisations of obfuscating what their tool, product or service does behind a veil of marketing nonsense.

Like, yeah, “Contemporizing your e-pillow success strategy ten-fold” sounds lovely and all, but why should I have to resort to AI to tell me you have a logging API?

You are up to date.
