i think a lot of platner's boosters are taking a line that's basically "well, the tattoo is stupid but he's not really a nazi," but that's missing the full spectrum of possibilities here. you can look at fetterman. lots of these folksy populists drift right because they don't have real commitments

The data economy has made us dumber in ways that also make us vulnerable to authoritarian takover. We are have become both cynical and gullible in the sense we think we are too jaded be fooled and as a result are tricked more easily www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/0...

Imagine if there were regular polls on "diabetic issues", as well as breathless news articles on "diabetic ideology" and politicians giving speeches about the "diabetic agenda". Healthcare is healthcare, period.
Polling on trans issues is difficult to interpret. It becomes even more difficult when pollsters use politically charged terms like 'transgender ideology.' Great new analysis by @billiejsweeney.bsky.social, only on Assigned Media. www.assignedmedia.org/breaking-new...

Mark Myles was part of the glue holding Selma together. To me, he was a respected colleague; to others, a father, mentor, friend, and beloved community member. After decades as a peacemaker, he died practicing nonviolence. I donated to honor his memory and I hope you will too. gofund.me/f98325b92

The weirdest thing about this discourse is that states with shorter school closures have the same amount of learning loss! I keep waiting for all the punditry on this to catch up with basic facts
Every time Covid and learning loss hits the news, people act like the only factor is folk staying home and learning online, rather than… Living through a global mass death event.

My most controversial post-ejection take is that treating voters as adults with agency and telling them the truth isn’t looking down on them, while telling voters things you know to be false to validate their feelings in an attempt to manipulate them is considerably more condescending.
it's a great interview, and what's striking is that at the end of the day both klein and coates believe in winning people over. the difference is that coates thinks you do this by telling them the truth, and klein thinks you do it by empathizing with them and recognizing their concerns as Real

1. A new The 19th/SurveyMonkey Poll finds that a majority of Americans are against trans youth care bans. This includes a majority of Independent voters, casting doubt on the narrative that Democrats need to pull back on transgender people. Subscribe to support our journalism.

The idea that if you make Dems a little more Republican, Republicans will vote Dem is what’s breaking us. And it doesn’t even work!
I genuinely cannot believe that Ezra Klein said we should run pro-life candidates in Kansas, Ohio, and Missouri; three states that recently held abortion referendums where the pro-choice side won!

I would love for a single democrat to reckon with the fact that conservatives are not in fact motivated by reasonable concerns. They are — just as they were with ‘concerns’ over blacks and gays and numerous other minorities over the last five decades — motivated by bigotry.
