This is a good series of main takeaways. Don't believe the people saying Anthropic has a home run business based on this S-1. It's still very much a speculative bet. Their profit on inference is going to get compressed barring a miracle new invention unlike anything we've seen in the space.

mr. TIM@timkellogg.me

Anthropic filed their S-1, a required document for IPO * $80B on-paper loss in H1 ‘26 * 900% revenue retention * $430B in non-cancelable compute commitments * $1.62B operating income www.anthropic.com/news/s1-sec

That aside, they need to essentially have SpaceX like monopoly market share in a much, much more competitive market. I'm pretty bearish long term

This story (about the town where the Spurs reached out to flood victims last year) is incredible. Every other paragraph is jaw-droppingly screenshottable. Then there's this graphic, which becomes all the more stunning when you realize that it's essentially the work of one guy.

NEW: Ingram, Texas, was just rebuilding from a devastating flood when its tiny police department enrolled in ICE’s 287(g) deportation program. Within a year, cops would hand over the equivalent of 10% of the town. with @nytimes.com

I have not once joined a company that did not code with embarrassing, no reason for being so insecure, code. Code is thought, no one has perfect thoughts, especially on a timeline. Just like everything else in life, automation provides consistency that is an improvement on rote human action.

I once inherited a python system that handled about $100m in ARR. It was a single Django class that was 25k lines long and had zero tests or docs that always called out to MySQL and postgres via fork+exec rather than actually using those client libraries

The Diplomat (season 4) is such a bizarre mix of genres, not all serious, but it is most like horror in cathartically portraying insane events that would look like a quant nostalgic vision of washington to Gen Z.

People need to stop asking liars hypotheticals.

BASH: If there were 2 Democratic Dan Sullivans on the ballot and they were potentially canceling each other out, would you be filing the same lawsuit? BLANCHE: Absolutely! Of course

I think this is an excellent description of what's going on. There are real issues with how these models were originally created and that's a separate conversation. We are where we are now and people do not want to be disrupted. Moral people will push people to be competitive.

I don't think it's a coincidence that the further down the privilege ladder you go from American middle class the attitude towards AI improves. A tech that lets a Zimbabwean teenager compete with a 40 something American suburbanite knowledge worker is going to test a lot of people's progressivism.

I think this is right. There's also a lot of creative destruction that needs to run it's course to re-center good work. Big Tech and conglomerates can probably get away with continuing weird scale math games on shareholder money, but any work without a capital moat is different now.

if Zohran Mamdani used the word "Shylock" the ADL would have called in a nuclear strike on New York City by now

The ADL finally chimes in… with one very short post: "The term 'Shylock' is rooted in a longstanding antisemitic stereotype. Regardless of intent, its use can reinforce harmful tropes about Jews and normalize language that has long been used to target the Jewish community."

It'd probably be more efficient if the government just nationalized the company and took it over directly.

Kept hearing from Flock prostesters that they didn't understand how cameras went up with their tax dollars and without their knowledge. Democrats need to be ready to hold hearings and inquiries into the assault that Musk, Zuckerberg and other tech bros are making against democratic institutions at home and abroad.

These people need to be expelled from the military at the soonest opportunity. The Democratic party is a complete failure for not having consistently prepared the country for all the incredibly hard things we need to do to rebuild.
