1/🧵 I know this long time ago but didn’t speak up. Trade unions are regulated by the Certification Officer, Stephen Hardy (also a part time judge). He somehow took the view that the Supreme Court decision in Scottish Ministers affected the interpretation of UNISON’s own constitution.

The biggest difficulty for trans rights – the general public seems to believe the new guidance makes it possible to exclude eg trans women from women's services in some circumstances. No. This was the previous position. The current guidance requires their exclusion, always, regardless of context.

Climate breakdown is clearly increasing fire hazards to ecosystems, and that'll continue to get worse. But the point is that, right now, in Ireland healthy forests don't burn. Even as things worsen, they'll continue to be far less vulnerable to fire than when wrecked. And MUCH better for nature...

I'm going to hold your hand while I say this. In Australia, we used to think that the wet tropical rainforests that get metres of rainfall every year didn't burn. Key words there, 'used to'

In the 90s when they started losing the climate debate, big oil switched to talking about it as a hypothetical problem generations down the line. There are many grim things about this timeline but that chunks of the world are literally on fire and this tactic still mostly works is morbid as hell.

This is why they keep investing in carbon capture tech which doesn't work. They tell themselves that the put-the-toothpaste-back-in-the-tube machine will morally absolve them for trying to maximise their personal wealth and comfort at the expense of every single member of humanity yet to be born.

One problem with tackling Climate Change denial has been that it is very difficult to imagine people who are so venal that they would knowingly advocate for what will harm future generations because some more money could be made now. It’s a struggle to envisage someone thinking like that.
