I’m not a political journalist, so was gladly surprised at the community I found here last night. To Americans anxious about the upcoming elections, a key thing we learned in Brazil that might help you: DO NOT engage with the far-right online. Don’t share rage bait. Amplify your people. Ignore them.

Popularism has been a total failure. It does not work. Since it became the unquestioned gospel creed of Democratic elites in the latter half of Obama II, they have only had victories after titanic Republican screwups. They were not earned by Democrats. They were cries for help from the public.

There is little meritocracy or competition when it comes to Democratic consultants—they get paid the same regardless of how their candidates perform in the election.

Conflicts of interest abound. This extraction is draining the Democratic base rather than investing in the party’s long term health, biasing candidate positions in favor of factions with big money, and weakening the party’s stance against corruption. Tough to beat authoritarianism in this situation

Democrats recruiting bland upper-class centrist veterans for swing districts at the expense of every other kind of candidate is a strategy that mostly has downsides but one key upside is those people all think Hegseth is the antichrist and want to be on the team of impeachment managers at his trial.

jamelle@jamellebouie.net

i really do think that a successful impeachment and removal of hegseth is a live possibility if dems win the senate. he is a genuine disaster.

Their politics are all different, but the appeal of Mamdani, Ossoff, and El-Sayed as speakers and campaigners is that they don't seem afraid they're going to get in trouble. That makes them hard to bully or even make fun of successfully.

Deranged hot take of the day: #DungeonCrawlerCarl is the Joe Rogan of the Left endless thinkpieces pine for. Superficially manosphere; actually deeply concerned with survival and justice in corrupt unfair systems bigger than any individual. Dungeon Crawler Carl is praxis.

“If you are staring at an example of social disorder or social inefficiency, and the left refuses to explain either why it has happened or how they will fix it, then the right gets to point at someone in the immediate area and say, ‘That’s who did it.’” crazy how much Mamdani speaks my language

Shame on Mt. Sinai for capitulating with this settlement, which violates that legacy of inclusion, their own Hippocratic oath, and New York’s human rights laws. (3/3)

but I am sorry, I simply cannot see building a press office that does effective social media outreach as a scandal in a world where explicit republican partisans control nearly every media outlet or social media site and are loud and up-front about how much of a thumb they’re putting on the scale

Elon Musk, the top Republican donor, who appeared on stage regularly supporting Republicans, says worse things than the worst thing Piker has ever said *every day* on the website he bought. Why doe no one care?

One guy has a trifecta he's using to hide cops who killed our neighbors for protesting goons putting churro ladies in concentration camps. The other says stupid shit occasionally on a Twitch stream, where he spends like 90% of his waking time. I want my party's leader to fight only the first guy.

the appeal of direct democracy is not rosy eyed idealism about the general adult population but simply a sober comparison of that population to its ruling class

Alaska's GOP governor earlier this year vetoed a bill that would have set limits to individual campaign donations. Then what happened? Voters on Tuesday approved a citizen-led ballot initiative that institutes very similar reforms. By a 40%+ margin.

That public schools don’t generally teach the Bible as history at the pre-college level, which constitutionally they certainly could, is not a sign of anti-religious sentiment. It’s a sop we throw religious parents in the intetests of civic peace.

In the Renaissance people theorized, since the Aeneid is great, if you wrote poems made only of words & phrases from the Aeneid rearranged they should be great too, since a great source regurgitated should yield greatness. They produced NOTHING we still read. Thinking about that a lot lately.

My sister was working in low-income schools in NYC while my bestie was working a contract based in Manhattan. My sister’s future husband was a TFA alum. They would frequently note that their students often had the same challenge (parents busy working) & all the $$$$ didn’t save the posh kids.

I think Ossoff has the same fundraising team as 90% of democrats and they are all fucking terrible. Whiny, wheezy, mealy-mouthed and useless. About as appealing as a piece of waterlogged toast. Who hired these people and how can we fire them?

Mad Scholar Frights@mattzollerseitz.bsky.social

Ossoff's fundraising people, however, have got to throw away the whiny, poor-mouth playbook that has been a disaster for Democrats. Makes him look like a loser. Always in a crisis. Always begging. Come on, now. Make your guy look strong and confident! @ossoff.senate.gov @ossoff.bsky.social

I don't have a problem with having both moderates and progressive Democrats in Congress. I do have a problem when people collapse into a pile of wet noodles around fascism, and yet suddenly know how to pull every trick in the book to stop progressives.

The theory that “electable” means “work to appease right-wing bigots under the assumption that majorities agree with them, at least partially, and they prioritize it when voting” has been tried. It has failed. Try something else.
