This is an attempt at getting kids to join the workforce at a younger age in hopes that having a low-paying labor job will deter them from going to college (since the labor job is “money-now” and college is “money-later”). Education is the enemy of fascism.

I assume fewer because school is more demanding now, at least where I live, than it was in the seventies. I assume it depends on family income. I wouldn’t not have allowed my son to work on a fishing boat or in construction at that age. Very dangerous work.

Cutting education short to go straight into the workforce is not a great strategy for those individuals' long term well being.
