MIN: Do you know how much new energy China put online last year? BURGUM: Intermittent or base load? M: 543 GW. How much was renewable? 434 GW. B: But only when the sun is shining M: Meanwhile, the US put up 53 GW of new energy last year - less than 10% of China. You're harming our natl security

Corporations who Trump and Republicans want to please. Trump needs them to like him. Hes pathological like that. Solars pannels bank energy thats sold to the grid. In 3 spring summer months you can bank enough energy that will fuel your house and cars. Excess is sold by us for profit.

Burgum should be absolutely embarrassed of himself, counting on America conflating renewables with just solar. China is the global leader in wind energy. Development & manufacturing. Dividing energy into “intermittent load” and “base load” is so archaic. What does your BESS network look like?

My god, they are all stupid people. They have no idea how anything works and definitely not how the real world works. I can see why Mr Piggy has surrounded himself with stupid rich people, he feels right at home. Mr Piggy is it embarrassment on The evolutionary scale

It’s fucking insane that these people have decided to kill an entire portion of the domestic energy market and the media just kinda shrugs and repeats the rapist’s lies.

Sigh. Obligatory "watts aren't energy" post. While the power vs energy thing isn't that big of a deal, it kinda sucks that people who make technology policy ... don't understand technology.

UAE’s Al Dhafra complex, which uses 5.2 gigawatts of solar PV, combined with 19 GWh of battery storage. It delivers a “firm” 1 GW of clean electricity for the cost of about USD$70/MWh.

We absolutely do. But it's not just power capability. China's investment in infrastructure is just breathless. Anyone doubting the US is in decline need only look at the massive massive infrastructure China has implemented over the last 20 years. We look like bums.

The other factor US politicians never talk about: China has 3x as many people as America. More engineers. More skilled labour. More architects. More construction workers. More local customers for new tech.

Too bad no economist ever predicted what would happen when you privatize everything and "manage" public infrastructure on a "quarterly numbers" basis instead of planning for growth and resilience. 🤬

Exactly right on this. And the part nobody’s mentioning is that China built more solar in 2023 alone than the US has in total. It’s not just scale—it’s acceleration, and that’s what shifts global supply chains.

It’s just amazing how much Trump damaged this country, when he assigns unqualified sycophants into cabinet positions. China is so far ahead; I’m not sure that the US will be able to catch up. STUPID Americans who REFUSED to see Trump’s incompetence, they are all to blamed for our country’s demise!

These morons will come up with any excuse to belittle renewables and pretend they can't work, meanwhile they tell us we simply MUST pump billions of tons of pollution into our air every day, like there isn't another way

Will no one just spend all of their allotted time asking/telling these morons about batteries so we don’t have to continue to hear the preposterous crap about “solar doesn’t work if the sun’s not shining”? What a bunch of idiots.

„Only when the sun is shining“… I wonder if they’re also afraid the sun might not rise again tomorrow morning, like (allegedly) the Aztecs. If this goes on long enough, they‘ll soon want to burn witches again. Same mindset. They seem to be mentally stuck in like the 17th century.

I’m glad these things get called out on the record BUT The GOAL is to harm national security - and steal from the US Treasury. They are the very definition of traitors and deserve appropriate punishment to set an example.

Burgum's comments are meant to convey: 1) loyalty and adherence to party line (ring-kissing and show of strength) 2) cultural values aligned with ignorance, anti-intellectualism, and disdain for expertise 3) owning the libs Fighting back with facts accomplishes nothing. Mock them!!

Republicans haven’t figured out yet that energy from the Sun can be stored in this new device called a “Battery” to be able to be used when the Sun is put away at nighttime.

My God...he knows! He just gets his bread buttered on both sides by oil & gas lobbyists. With this regime of bullies for billionaires, always F O L L O W the money.

No coal required during day. When solar panels generate electricity, they directly displace the need to burn fossil fuels—primarily coal and natural gas—on the electric grid. ... and we save that much fuel by not needing to burn it, and don't pollute as much.

Burgum is so badly informed it's laughable. The sun doesn't need to shine for solar to work. Only the darkness of night hampers generation and for that there are storage batteries. Trump has gone out of his way to hire the laziest most unqualified people to manage critical areas of government.

For this reason alone, the USA will be a former superpower in 20 years and the PRC will be the planet’s most powerful state. You’re living in 1950, America. China is living in 2050.

It took me way too many years to get this, but -- the real 'problem' with wind and solar is that the sources can't be monetized. They're free to virtually everyone on the planet, with the right equipment (which CAN be monetized). No one can block all the wind and sun going to a certain country. 1/

Countries like Saudi Arabia have vast potential for wind and solar, after all, but they stick with oil because each step of the byzantine extraction and refining and delivery process makes money for someone. Oil is extremely anti-democratic/egalitarian. Most of us can't have our own source. 2/

Solar and wind are very egalitarian. Especially as the equipment gets more efficient and smaller, everyone can have their own supply. That's the real reason folks like Burghum hate these sources. They can't control and profit from them.

Doug Burgum, like all of @realdonaldtrump’s cabinet and other appointees, is a willfully ignorant, & deeply unserious person, except for bowing down to Trump. “Only when the sun shines”? Was his next question “Only when the wind blows”?

Funny how trumps meddling in the global economy is not going to result in American steel, coal, or oil being a powerhouse, rather he will force the global economy towards green energy.

The faster a country uses up their oil the sooner they have to go elsewhere to get it. They all know it but this is the only period of time they can profit from it. The future generations be damned.

If only anyone could figure out how to store energy generated at one moment in time for use at another moment in time. They could call it something like a "battery."

Kind of true but peak solar output only coincides with early afternoon demand. So still gotta plan for storage for the evening and morning surge More interestingly we could schedule some demand for peak output. Appliances and EVs and such

At this point, using that line should get one impeached for stupidity. North Dakota (his state) has huge solar farms. He knows the farmers would be in even greater trouble if the did not have the solar market. What does Trump have on him?

I’ve found that in China total grid-related storage reached over 213 GW in 2025. I’m not an engineer, but that seems a pretty good achievement. The ignorance and arrogance of the people in this administration is astonishing.

Setting aside their obvious battery ignorance, this is such an absurd all-or-nothing argument "because the sun only shines 10-15 hours per day, it won't work at all." Fucking brain worms all the way down.

This is an *outdated* argument because old school plants weren’t designed to be turned on and off so they always generated a certain baseload but “peaker plants” (gas plants designed to turn on during peak times when demand would otherwise exceed supply) have been in use for well over a decade.

PLEASE! Someone explain to this POS Burgum the purpose and use of BATTERIES!! 🤬🤬 I know it has been brought to his attention previously but can he really be that F'n dumb?

Has anyone actually talked about how this energy buildout in China impacts the millions living near new power plants, or what shifts like this mean for US jobs and energy bills?

Has anyone actually looked at what this means for people struggling with energy costs here? Or how uneven access keeps hitting low-income communities every winter?

Love how this entire exchange skips over who actually gets affordable, reliable power. Chinese consumers saw real boosts; here it’s a fight just to keep people’s bills from spiking or grids from breaking down.

Burgum intentionally ignores batteries, which would be a booming industry for the US if he and others in this dumb downed administration would only embrace the facts.

Burgum's success with Great Plains Software must be purely due to dumb luck, because the stuff he says makes him sound like one stupid SOB.

Anyone with basic intelligence knew after Trump's first term he was a fuckwit but but Americans voted for him again and here we are.

Just cover every god damn parking already. Why do we have to even talk about this? Incredible amounts of jobs and energy, and imagine how pleasant getting into a car will be in the heat, rain, or snow. This can be done on the local level — no need to politicize it! electrek.co/2025/11/02/n...

electrek.coNew national law will turn large parking lots into solar power farmsStarting this month, parking lots in South Korea with more than 80 spaces will be required to install solar canopies and carports.

It would be great if there was a solid debate on all our energy options....oil, natural gas, coal, wind, solar, hydro, and others. Bring in objective engineers, scientists, analysts, economists, etc. Peer review all the evidence being used. Have it all on the record.

When the weather is bad and the sun isn't shining, that's usually when the wind is blowing, and wind turbines will be working. Of course we have a president who must have been frightened by a windmill when he was a child, because he still hates them.

Let’s just cede green energy tech and science in general to the Chinese. It’s just astounding how fucking stupid this administration is on EVERY level.
