Sen. Thom Tillis says he expects there will be pressure on Mike Johnson to not seat the new Congress if Democrats win

He won’t be speaker anymore so it won’t happen….now Hegseth and Trump sending the military to seize ballots on the other hand

Even that is incredibly difficult. There will be armed standoffs in blue states and even in a few red states. The logistics of seizing ballots at the local level is incredibly difficult.

Of course he will, and of course he'll listen and of course he'll violate the US Constitution for the 17,000th time to defy the will of the people. It's the fascist thing to do.

Who TF does Tillis think is going to read his book? The MAGA GOP cult can't read, and anyone even slightly to the left of mad fascist suckhole won't buy it.

If he tries it the Dems should just take over the Chamber, elect their Speaker, and dare Johnson to do something about it.

Wow, what a profile in courage Tillis turned out to be. Always voted with Trump’s agenda and now has a book to sell so he pretends to have been some kind of voice of reason. Such a vapid tool.

The more Sen Thom Tillis speaks the less I like him and the less I want to hear from him. He’s not the person he thinks he is. He’s a legend in his own mind. You couldn’t pay me to read his book.

NC voter here. He couldn't get elected again here, but that's because he didn't vote 100% of the time with 47. He talks like a moderate but votes maga 99% of the time.

The messaging / tone / political slant of CNN is dictated by David Zaslav & John Malone, a couple of radical right billionaire boy-pals who are Rupert Murdoch wannabes. They want CNN to be as "welcoming" to Republicans spewing talking points as Fox, pretending their far-right stance is "balanced."

Every single Republican is a fucking traitor to our nation, it's time to take our nation back and i'm not taking NO for an answer. i will become the motherfucking JOKER. I'M FUCKING DONE WITH THIS SHIT.

The guy who now says he regrets voting to confirm RFK Jr. says he thinks Mike Johnson will do the right thing & seat the new Democratic members in January.

Listen Tom Tillis, if Mike Johnson refuses to seat new congress then all of us Tax payers will go to HR and change our W-4 Employee withholding certs to reflect 1000 dependents on fed line so 0 tax dollars go to feds. We will put it in escrow & file lawsuits for taxation without representation.

Its called taxation without representation- When President Elon and VP Trump threaten the Reps elected to REPRESENT each of us into compliance; it takes our individual constitutional rights of representation away! What would a 2024 Boston Tea party protest look like? Teslas in the bay?

That's weird bc technically he doesn't seat them. The person that would obstruct is the House Clerk, which is appointed by Johnson. I'm not sure the current guy would do it so, if they swap him out, you know what's up.

On one hand, he’s giving away some potential strategy but on the other he’s not really equivocally standing against the potential for disenfranchisement of a shit tonnage of voters.

“I’ve got a lot of respect for Speaker Mike Johnson.” These words will be his next big regret, after already admitting he screwed up confirming Hegseth and Kennedy.

Tillis is being disingenuous. States certify election results, there is NO reason for Mike Johnson, or whomever the speaker may be, to not seat newly elected members. This book tour to the major networks that Tillis is on is making me really not like him, at all.

Johnson won’t be the speaker. As of January 3rd the prior house is done and Johnson is no longer speaker. The new house elects a new speaker and only the new house could contest a seat.

Do Republicans really not understand that no one will put up with their stupid shit anymore? Do they really want the Mussolini Solution?

I'm not disputing any of this. How things are supposed to go doesn't seem to matter much anymore. Do you think Judge Luttig is just trying to scare people? I wonder why he would do that.

I mwan its illegal but do you think the lawsuits would be resolved before damage is done? They prevented a woman from officially joining the house this year for 4+ months. Is everyone just forgetting about that?

The clerk has a duty to include all *certified* members on the roll. If Republican states refuse to certify elections where the Democratic candidate wins (which they will), the clerk has a legal basis to exclude them. You think Republicans haven’t thought this through?

Sure dude, but since when have Trump and his cronies let such clear legal and constitutional provisions stop them from trying. They may do it regardless and then wait to be sued. And while they are being sued they will continue to keep the Dems out of the Congress.

Also who is going to enforce the laws as you stated it. Who is going to hold them accountable when they lose in court. What federal agency is going to escort the dems to Congress and force the christofascists to stand down.

But how does the new House organize itself before it exists? I get that the old one is gone and has no say, but there does seem to be an odd moment where the new House has to bootstrap itself into existence.

The Clerk of the House calls the new House to order, reads the roll call of the Members-Elect and basically runs things until a majority selects the new Speaker. The Clerk is not supposed to be partisan but is elected by the outgoing House. Sounds like it could be messy. 🤷‍♂️

I heard him earlier today say that Jan 6 "worked itself out" Motherfucker got primaried out of his own party, but is still going to carry shit for them.

And, one of us doesn't understand how things work. I believe, there is no congress until they assemble. The last congress, the one Mikey was in charge of, will be defunct. Non-existent. Anyway, not that that would stop him from trying some kind of BS.

It's true. But he's the classic man without a home. Democrats rightly hate him, MAGA hates him because he only tows 95% of Trump's line, and independents have never heard of him.

Republicans: the party that talks about "the sanctity of work", that takes your benefits and shits on them, that takes your social security that YOU pay into, that tells you that you don't deserve affordable healthcare but enjoys tax payer funded healthcare themselves, doesn't actually work... Ever

He’s not the first one to suggest this. I believe that Judge J Michael Luttig floated it a few weeks ago. I know I’ve been saying it. But I don’t think it will take much pressure; my guess is that he is chomping at the bit to do this, to prove his devotion.

How do I collect on that bet when we're in a civil war Tom? I'll take you up on it but I need that money in escrow because I'm probably going to need it on the 5th

Wait until Mike Johnson feels the pressure by Americans and the stock markets and the whole world to adhere to the Constitution. We can exert equally as much pressure as a lame duck criminal conman president with an overall 18% approval rating, in fact, a lot more.

As of january 3rd, the current congress is over, and mike ceases to be speaker. And only if he is voted to be speaker again by the new congress elect, will he have even the potenrial to try that illegal and unconstitutional idea.

Yes, there will be pressure to honor the Constitution and the will of the voters. None of this was ever in question before these assholes

Why can't the existing lame duck Congress agree to replace Speaker Johnson in November/December, to ensure there is someone who will seat the new Congress come January?

Tillis goes to insane lengths to make the actions of the GOP seem like any other old time in US electoral history. It. Is. Not. Never has a party attacked the Capitol to stop certification of elections, beaten/maimed police officers and more. Get lost, Tillis. You're part of the problem.

Yes and it’s my understanding that the timing on that is very tight, so I don’t buy the explanation that saying Johnson won’t seat the incoming Congress is essentially the same as saying he’ll pull something with the clerk. It would actually be a lot more difficult than a simple refusal to seat.

Why are elections so complicated and difficult in this supposed greatest country in the world. We have elections. Takes about six weeks. There’s a winner and we all move on. It must be exhausting to be in constant election mode.

Who cares? Congress meets wherever a majority of the elected membership choose to gather. If Trump tries it, they can go to Independence Hall, or an arena in Chicago, or a motel ballroom off I-35, appoint a speaker, and start impeaching.

Johnson doesn’t get that choice. In January, everybody shows up to work. The Clerk call them into order. They elect a new speaker because it is a new Congress. The new speaker gives everyone their oath and they are seated. No need to sow anxiety.
