Whoa! Hats off to ABC News reporter Matt Gutman for keeping his cool yesterday. This LAPD officer needs to be relieved of duty if he can’t handle an alleged “touch” without snapping.

Using tear gas, smoke bombs, long range rifles, and men on horses as crowd control is archaic, stupid, and no it doesn't work of control of anything and only makes people angrier.

in every video i hear them yelling don't touch me. clearly they have practiced that as an excuse to do whatever they want. and they don't seem to realize they are being recorded from every possible angle. so, keep talking, morons, this is in the air now...

What passes for "law enforcement" in the US boggles the mind. Pushing people doing their jobs, arresting and handcuffing very old men because they disagree with the dictator. Things are only going to get worse. The US is officially screwed

Video shows it. The vast majority of the LA protests were peaceful. Glad ABC cameras were rolling. Reporter handled de-escalating the situation well! LAPD & PDs from other areas need to do better whether it’s rotating officers from different areas or more training in crowd control.

There can be good policing—just not in LA. This is an excerpt from the Palm Springs “No Kings” rally on Saturday—the speaker here is Andy Mills, Chief of Police for PSPD. (Apologies for the umbrella in the way—I was behind a news media camera set up.)

Important to see this thuggery on TV even if this is a reporter for disgraced ABC (which fired Terry Moran). Imagine what they do to ordinary people who lack camera backup. Did they preselect these cops for brutality the way they do audience members for political leanings? Can't trust any of them.

Though this is the LAPD, I bet this is the type of stuff they include in the "400% increase in assaults of ICE agents" that the White House keeps citing. Some reporter should FOIA that information to see what is included.

Cop assaults reporter. Qualified Immunity puts cop above the law. Cop will report reporter for assaulting cop, despite the video evidence to the contrary. Judicial system will shield fragile cop. The police badge is the single most effective "Get Out of Jail Free" Card in world history.

I saw that officer approached him grab him and push him from a static position, causing the reporter to become unbalanced and miss step. He grabbed the officers arm to keep himself from falling over. That reporter needs to be rewarded for keeping a level head and being compassionate.

Pressure to comply with National Guard and the Marines. High temperatures (90+). NG & Marines sleep on the ground without any bedding, given the worst MRE’s. Everyone is tired and stressed. Non-protesters are committing delinquent actions, and bad decisions by commanders who can’t de-escalate.

Did the reporter punch him? That’s the only thing that would justify this response. It’s insane that this cop would loose it like that. He acts as if he can’t wait to kill someone. That type of unprovoked anger is not normal.

Oh I do agree. I'm not suggesting that it is just roid rage. You are correct. He is probably a sociopathic, misogynistic, bully boy, racist, control freak...who likes the roids!! Also known as Proud Boy.

That attitude the cop displays is indicative of what's wrong with police in America. The level of anger, indignation & righteousness was unjustified for what may or may not have been just a "touch". It would be almost comical if they didn't use that emotional dysregulation to justify killing folks.

Yes, that's the leading one. ISTR there were others as well, but details escape me. All of them struck me as a thin veneer of bravery to slap over their institutional cowardice. I've known brave people. Bravery is not rage. Mr Rogers was 1000x braver than any of these cops.

For a while that was (too slowly) seemingly beginning to change, with certain officers finally being held accountable but, that’s all over now apparently. I understand that not all police are bad, but it becomes really hard to see the good ones behind ones like this.

The cops are itching for violence. When all you have is a hammer, everything starts looking like a nail. The same applies to the military. Bringing in the military, which is trained to kill the opposition, is just begging for violence. That's the gop's whole goal.

Perez means “Son of Pedro (Peter)” in Spanish. However in Hebrew Perez means “breach” or “breakthrough”, because he unexpectedly came out before his twin brother, Zerah (Gen 38:29). While he may not be Jewish, it appears he could be carrying the torch for Zerah’s brother.

Maybe it is hot and stressful for the LAPD in full uniform, but the aggressiveness shown in the last few days by certain officers suggests something is fundamentally wrong with the attitude of many officers toward citizens peacefully expressing their First Amendment Freedom of Expression rights.

The things we volunteers are taught from the event planners at marshall security meetings are to stay calm, be friendly, and not to touch anyone. Why shouldn't the police do the same? We pay their salaries. Ugh!

Very few people are emotionally mature enough to be granted any level of authority and yet as a nation, we've decided to give it to hundreds of thousands, often with very little training except in how to kill effectively.

I agree! IMO our law enforcement isn't trained as adequately as other counties' law enforcement. Oftentimes, they're called to be social workers and they aren't trained. We're not funding and hiring to the level we need and officers are stretched thin.

Seems to me he was concentrating on trying to do his job--which is reporting--and stay professional while on the air. Also, trying not to get injured by unidentifiable thugs holding lethal weapons. He was attempting to cool the situation down. "Live TV" is a warning to them that they're on air.

Excellent example of how a persons physical state impacts their perception of risk/ threat and preventing escalation to violence.Yes, he definitely needed to be relieved of duty based on knowledge of human behavior when stress is physical and mental.

Meanwhile, up the freeway in Pasadena, a much smaller number of police were managing to control a crowd of a few thousand and keep everyone safe, without looking armed for urban warfare. They weren't joining the protest, but also didn't escalate tensions.

Bullies, assholes, and also bratty children. Hard to think of anything more petulant than whining about someone touching you, especially when there’s video evidence that the clqim is a lie.

If you’ve ever lived with violent people -you’ll find that nothing you do will make them behave or see the light. The reporter stood his ground and called it out- not easy stuff with body armored dudes screaming roid rage in your face

So which occupation has the highest rate of domestic violence? That would be law enforcement. Their unchecked behavior & lack of real consequences allow misogynistic bullies to prey on their families & the public. Not all LE are bad but it is a breeding ground for those w/ bully tendencies.

Sure, but he’s the only one of the lot completely out of control right in front of a live camera of a major network, threatening an on air correspondent who couldn’t be more tame. They are literally telling him the camera is live, to help him realize how bad this looks but he’s lost his mind.

The court’s need to give back control of military and police to the Governor. And if the police don’t want to be touched, they need to stay away from the protesters and media.

Thank you! Until a crime is committed...law enforcement needs to back the fuck off and stop provoking conflict. We should all be screaming at law enforcement to demilitarize and de-escalate. Check out P.O.E.T. in Seattle. Police Officer Engagement Teams. Treating protesters with respect.

Wow that officer definitely should not hold that title. Law enforcement is suppose to de escalation training. If he went from 0 to 100 like that, what is he doing to ppl on the streets of LA? More than likely he has prior complaints of the same in his file.

More than just being authoritarian, they seem deeply frustrated. They live miserable lives and end up projecting their personal frustrations onto others, especially when they believe they hold power. We can call this a MAGA syndrome.

Psyche evals!? Like “hey are you an unstable racist POS? Yeah? ok great! Welcome on board” their CVs say “biggest POS this side o’ the mississippi!”

Sure they get a psych test: Are you mean enough for this job? Are you able to Not let your conscience get in the way? Can you be tough & ready to assault people that aren't fast enough to be arrested by having their hands pulled behind their backs however much they whine about it hurting? Ok; Hired!

Depends on the force. Many of the larger cities require an associates degree for entry level and higher degrees as they move up. Psych evaluations are done, but the first part is similar to the test they have job applicants for customer service jobs take and from that is how they base further eval.

I felt that aura as a young child when my bike was stolen and my parents called the police to our house to "investigate." He was outwardly polite enough, but even at age 11, the thought that ran through my head was "don't bother ever calling the police."

The selection bias involved also includes self-selection: those attracted to positions of authority where they get to feel powerful without earning respect.

It’s been my experience that the type of people who go into that line of work tend to be that way. They need something to make them feel big and strong over the people that they feel inferior to. Clearly, I do not mean everyone.

Police officers are normally trained for situations like this. If one cannot keep his cool (the others appear to have kept theirs) he should be on a desk job instead of making life dangerous for his colleagues and the people he is supposed to serve & protect.

When your top down leadership vilifies everyone including any press that are not total right wing liars and mix it in with rhetoric shady in and day out about all of the “illegals” this is what you get, hot headed, flipped out men with guns. A woman officer would have handled that differently!!

Anybody that off the rails should not be out there. That's when innocent people get killed. Between over worked and all stressed out and that massive ego, anything can go wrong in an instant. This guy needs to take some time off.

If that's how he's acting on live tv, and he can't be so stupid as to not know what a TV camera looks like if he works in LA ffs, just imagine how many people he's beaten that day who also did nothing. Almost wonder if he did that hoping to get a clip on Faux News so he could brag to his friends.

I like to believe (and maybe it's magical thinking on my part) that the majority of law enforcement officers act in a forthright fashion. But I also believe that the exceptions (i.e. the crazed guy in this video) are known to their superior officers & colleagues, but the thin blue line protects them

Then they don't work for WTP?? They should be charged, tried by a jury of their peers and when found guilty, imprisoned right in with their peers, the other fucking criminals.

They are completely insane with their performances and lies 🙄 like none of us have been here since the birth of their Patriarchy!! NO MORE greedy, privileged colonizers that are absolutely NOT morally superior and absolutely LOVE 🤑🤑🤑 and violence! #MMEIP #NoKings

Look at those idiots…armed to the teeth and deploying their gas masks…for what? They are not in a war zone. I suspect they’ve been watching too much OANN, Newsmax, & Fox News…believing the propaganda rather than their own experience

And, this is exhibit A as to why we have No Kings protests. Democracy is eroding rapidly across the country. My small town in Western Massachusetts had a very peaceful protest. Bernie Sanders said, and I know emotions are running high these days, violent protests play right into tRump’s playbook.

"These folks are tired," and, apparently, afraid of cooties. Somebody skipped their nap. Somebody's cranky. Perez made me think. Does it feel honest to say that someone is regressing if you have doubts that they progressed in the first place?

Sigh. I hate this timeline we are living in. Like a nightmare. Hoping I’m right, but idk. And now I’m worrying that the orange guy is getting us into something even worse to try to distract us from all the rest of his shit show. I miss competence and rule of law and so much more.
