Mitch McConnell stole two Supreme Court seats. Now ask yourself this: If McConnell were still Leader and a Democratic senator had been missing from public view for more than six weeks, what would he be doing right now? 1/2

McConnell refused to even hold hearings for Merrick Garland, arguing it was an election year. Then he rushed Amy Coney Barrett through just days before another presidential election after insisting the exact opposite four years earlier.

Mike Johnson did the same with Adelita Grijalva. Sidelined seating her after her special election because "the government is in shutdown and we don't have time" while seating Republican representatives during that shutdown, sometimes days after their special elections.

You can't use this logic to say he stole two seats. I agree he stole Garland's, but if that was wrong, then not holding hearings for Barrett would have been wrong too. Yes, he is a hypocrite, but so are people saying he stole two seats.

He was the Majority Leader and he did whatever it took to get what he wanted because he had all the power. I’m still pissed about it! But our focus now should be winning power and using it ruthlessly, like the example Mitch set. No more bullshit bipartisan fantasies!!!!!

He can’t do anything of the sort under Kentucky law, and even if he could, the seat would still be R. Mitch couldn’t do anything about a missing Dem member either. This is nonsense. Mitch being unable to vote for Save America Act and Blanche is a good thing. lastcampaign.substack.com/p/faq-about-...

We don’t even need to theorize on this. When Lloyd Austin was hospitalized after surgery and the Pentagon took 3 DAYS to notify, they held hearings and demanded his resignation.

slimiest greaseball. look at his trump acquittal speech, he knew what trump did but he was persuaded to play politics and let him go, citing a bogus procedural argument. he certainly could have whipped enoughed votes if he went the other way. he has more of a direct causative role in this than most.

Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s final wish was that she not be replaced on the Supreme Court until a new president was installed. He doesn't deserve any special treatment he is incapable of kindness or compassion. A vile coldhearted monster.

If that is true then allow their local Kentucky news channel to go to the Hospital and to film it Or if he’s talking to people like they say Then he can talk to the Local news channel Neither has happened

I don’t know what he’s in. He could be in a jar full of ashes he could be in a private home with a private nurse brain dead with a doctor visiting asking his wife is she ready to pull the plug? She might let it go on for a year. That’s how it works —next of kin can keep them alive.

If McConnell were minority leader and the Dems had a majority of 53-47 that was temporary down to 52-47 due to the long time absences of a Senator for a sold blue state? I'd assume he would do nothing, as that would be most logical move.

Also this whole conspiracy came the idea not that a Democrat could win the seat in a special election (or the state law challenged in time to make a difference) it came from the thought of Thomas Massie winning a special election and literally stopping the Senate from functioning.

What angers me is the Democrats continuously act like they don’t remember any of this. They constantly reach for a pillow every time there’s a goddamn gun fight. It makes me wanna punch them in the face almost as hard as I wanna punch Nazis.

Hate to break it to you, but that is the way politics works. If the players and parties were reversed, it would have been the same thing. If POTUS were Republican and Senate Majority leader were Democrat, if would have gone down the exact same way. The GOP nominee would never have been considered.

Of all the crappy things he’s done, manipulation of the court is most infuriating. Hypocritical and unethical through and through. It brings me comfort knowing one of his daughters works on causes directly in conflict with the positions her father holds onto with hateful glee.

The Republicans “play for keeps”, the Democrats just wanna “make nice”. There’s no fire in the belly of the Dem leadership - Schumer’s too old, Jeffries is too dumb.

Right, McConnell refused to hold hearings for Garland because it was better for Republicans if he didn't allow a liberal judge to be seated. The same way that it is now better for Democrats if Beshear doesn't allow a Republican senator to take office any sooner than is required.

Um, I was responding to a comment about all that Mitch did. Take a step back. The Dems have been weak. They did this to us. They had 10 years to fight and they didn't. Repeatedly. Chuck Schumer was too busy trying to do what was best for his imaginary Republican family, the Baileys. Look them up.

What I do t understand is why democrat politicians don't wild their power like this. Republicans lie and cheat and break the law to make the world a worse place, why not do SOMETHING to push back? Any democrat, force your way into Mitch's death chamber with a camera and show everyone the truth.

MM refused Garland a hearing, “claiming” it was too close to the election - that was Mar 2016, 8 MONTHS before the election. Then he conveniently allowed a hearing for ACB in Oct 2020, 4 WEEKS before the election! You telling me that wasn’t rigged? 🤬🤮 SCOTUS reform must be the #1 priority!💪

Yep, it’s kind of like the hardball politics of gerrymandering - doesn’t make it right! Republicans are far more willing to play hardball . . . it’s their lack of character & moral fiber that’s largely to blame for the pitiful state this country is in . . . John McCain would be sick! 🤮

Yes, he was partisan & inconsistent re procedure. But that's not "stealing". If 50 senators wanted Garland, they could have forced hearings and/or called up his nomination and confirmed him. McC just shielded Collins et al from an awkward vote by being bad cop. She could pretend she wanted hearings!

He should’ve. In introspect, Garland would’ve landed on the conservative side. He never prosecuted T for the terrorist attack he launched on 1/6/2021. One might think he is a Republican sympathetic to the Orange Ogre.

He would have expelled the member of the Senate using Senate Rules (if they were from a Red State) so they could be replaced by the Governor of the state with a voting member!

We have all the statistical evidence we need to conclude McConnell is incapacitated or dead. When was the last time any Republican told the truth about any subject? If you remember such an occasion, and I do not, how many false statements since then? Thousands? So one chance in 10,000 he’s okay?

It's absolutely crazy that the governor of Kentucky is pleading for proof of life from a senator. If an employee was out for 6 weeks with zero contact or excuses in any other job they'd have been replaced weeks ago. Absolutely insane. I mean, do you keep waiting? How long do you wait?

McConnell would have selected a republican to replace the seated senator who is MIA and ensure they were sworn in immediately. He wouldn’t be waiting around like this. @govandybeshear.bsky.social be the patriot and hero that we know you are. Select his replacement right now.

EXACTLY!!! WHERE is our junk yard dog? The old days are over, and they're not coming back. They're ruthless motherfuckers, WE have to get RUTHLESS ourselves or it's fucking over.

i see the arguments about keeping the missing senate seat for as long as possible. on the other hand, the electoral fallout if it did turn out that Mitch was dead and the republicans and the media were lying would be severe, at least if the Democrats found a way to communicate that around the media

Well, what do you expect when he’s dismantled about every protective arm of the government?? And people can just luxuriously slobber on filet mignon, w/big fat butts. Wondering “why are the peons alway sad”? Imagine a big cream pie in their faces? Or Ozempic-might scarecrow em down a bit.

A governor really has no authority to actually do something about it. What would be cool is if he had encouraged every resident of Kentucky to call McConnell's office in outrage about this nonsense. Give the voters some agency. Shit would change.

Why the fuss? Rep. Tom Kean, Jr from NJ missed 142 days & 140 votes. Didn't hear a word until he returned & said he was hospitalized for depress. Haven't heard anyone complain before, during or after. Mitch is the same. He's only got until 1-2027 to serve.GOP is doing fine screwing things up w/o him

RBG wasn’t even in the ground when he pushed her replacement after saying he would “give her the courtesy”. If you lived like a dick you will be remembered as a dick

OMG! Then, do something about it? Are you waiting until your time is up? The law is in your hands, because you said it yourself. How f*cking annoying? Stop all of this bullshit! Sorry Christopher, my anger is not towards you.

I seem to remember the democrats doing little to nothing while McConnell held the people of the US hostage for decades. McConnell passed one bill in his tenure in the Senate without democratic votes. The Tea Party faction refuses to vote for anything except a tax break.

JFC storm his fukin house hospital, hospice the goddamn cemetery who cremated his fukin ass. THIS IS BULLSHIT. HE’S GONE. WE GET TO CHOSE!! Pick SOMEONE NOW IF MITCH THE ASSWIPE SHOWS UP HE CAN CAMPAIGN FOR HIS SEAT AGAIN. THERE PROBLEM FUCKIN SOLVED!!!! Goddamn People. Fuck decorum this is war

He's dead. Nomistake. Good riddance. This will go down with all the other malfeasance of his time as senator in the most corrupt regime of all of US history

I'm not sure which has a higher count: The number of times Beshear has nicely asked McConnell to show himself while taking zero action as governor. Or the number of times Trump has said Iran's military is obliterated and we've won the war. Beshear is the Susan Collins of governors.

Governor Andy Beshear cannot legally force a visit or special election or replace Mitch McConnell under any circumstances while the Senator has not officially resigned or vacated the seat. An absence due to illness is legally treated as temporary leave, not a vacancy. Beshear isn’t above the law.

Do this, go to Beshear’s FB page. He discusses McConnell every day. Every day. I know you’re frustrated. We all are. But wishing a gov to take illegal action won’t get you anywhere.

I am informed. And I disagree. Why do people have to have the exact same opinions? You did a really good job there showing the world you just follow what other people say though. "I don't have time to make my own arguments, how about you let others speak on my behalf." LOL

He's giving a clinic in not meeting the moment. He writes a strongly worded letter, which in itself has become a cliché for Democratic ineptitude, then turtles when Team McConnell lies about his health, then sends his minions out to attack critics as not knowing KY or being Berniebros. Weak.

You probably think this is some great dunk when they literally just released McConnell from hospital and right now, Repubs are down a senator. How the sweet hell do you guys think you’re at all able to talk politics when you have this much of a lack of understanding of it?

You probably think that you read taking action meaning he must appoint a new Senator or try to fill the seat. But that is because you have poor reading comprehension. Taking action is a broad term But way to salivate over regurgitating pundit talking points. I'd save the insults for the mirror.

You were so quick to trip over yourself regurgitating the point that he can't appoint a Democrat that you've forgotten basic English words. Action ≠ only appointing a replacement. Action has a very broad meaning if you genuinely didn't know.

I've read multiple comments by you stating that there's other actions that could be taken, but I haven't seen you state what those alternative actions might be (although there's a lot of replies so it's possible I've missed that!).

Beshear doesnt have the power to replace McConnel first and foremost because McConnel isn't dead. Secondly because even if he is incapacitated, there is not mechanism to remove a Senator for incapacitation, outside of the Senate expeling them.

I called Andy’s office and asked what he is actually going to do to address missing Mitch. The office told me they can’t speak on it and when Andy is ready he will let us know. I said tell him that’s un-fucking-acceptable.

Thank you! Everyone here is so eager to trip over themselves to let me know that he can't make an appointment. Like that is all taking action is allowed to mean.

I don't think you understand the political structure of Kentucky at this time. We are locked the fuck down like Texas. This is a Deep red state thanks to Mitch. Beshear has done absolutely everything precisely right that is possible here. As a local, kindly keep your insults elsewhere.

I understand the political structure of Kentucky quite well. If everything was done precisely correct then it would be unanimously lauded. But it isn't. And telling others to close their mouths because you don't like the opinion is the type of head in the sand nonsense that led us to where we are.

I can and do speak hyperbolically to make my point, and did not mean that literally. No one is perfect and it would be statistically impossible for him to be unanimously lauded if he were flawless. Back to my point, calling him Susan Collins is far less helpful to healthy intellectual discourse.

Had the tables been turned in Democratic senators not seated another Justice in the same situation, those senators would have been tarred and feathered. Yes, McConnell stole the first one. The second one, either side would have done that and if you don't think so you're being naive.

If he knew the alternative was a special election sure to elect another Democrat. He would do nothing and let the opposition stay down one vote. …which is what the Democrats are doing with him now.

Beshear is acting like a little whiner. Impotent squealing about what he wants Mitch to do. Meanwhile Mitch is nowhere. Beshear needs to act and stop being impotent.

If Mitch were in charge and that Dem senator’s absence made it easier for Mitch to get what he wanted, he would keep his mouth shut. And so should we

McConnell as Senate majority leader, absolutely obliterated the rules of American democracy. His hypocrisy in not holding hearings for a SCOTUS appointment bc "it's too close to an election" one year out and then ramming through Amy Coney Barrett in just under one month is his legacy.

If Mitch were deciding what to do with a missing Democrat, he would do nothing, especially if it looked like that person wasn't coming back. He would let Democrats be down a vote. He wouldn't want to call a special election this close to November. He would let them be deprived of a vote for ~6mo.

That's literally the most strategic thing you can do. There's no guarantee which side would win a special election. So you could end up with a republican that can vote. Instead of one that can't. You really want that? Mitch wouldn't do that. Focus on November. Forget about this. Leave it alone.

If D's win in Nov, they can change the rules about this in Jan. Require anybody who's missing for more than a week to inform Congress and the public of why they're missing and how long they believe they will be gone. After being deprived of a vote for months, R's might even vote for it.

I GUARANTEE that if a democrat were in the EXACT same situation right now (at the same time), Republicans would be DEMANDING a special election or inserting someone in the role. GUARANTEE!!!

He’d be doing what he always did. Something unprincipled and unethical if not illegal – something that drives voters away from his party by the tens of thousands. So before pitching us another “they go low, we go lower“ strategy, maybe use a little foresight.

Beshear is constrained by Kentucky law at the moment AND it's actually a better strategy to leave Mitch wherever he is. The Senate has a razor-thin Republican majority and they're down a vote because of MIA Mitch. Why are some folks trying to A) pressure Beshear into breaking the law and B) giving

the Republicans another vote in the Senate? The Kentucky legislature made sure that Beshear couldn't appoint a Dem to Mitch's seat (they changed the law when Mitch started failing). I don't understand this "DO SOMETHING BESHEAR" crap.

I will block trolls and nonsense. The reason the gov can’t replace with his own choice is because McConnell encouraged a law to be passed on 2021 to remove the gov from the process should McConnell pass away or become incapacitated The GoP is an evil cheating immoral party.

I think he’s doing exactly what he needs to do. Not what social media thinks he needs to do. I can pretty much guarantee he’s got lawyers on his staff and lawyers at the DNC who are advising him on what he can do. I think he’s making the best case he can to start taking action.

No, they have real degrees, they’ve argued in real courts, they’ve crafted real legal opinions, won and lost cases and probably make more money than you do. Oh, and I doubt they spend too much time on Bluesky caring what people think of their work 😉.

And do you realize that the Special election law in Kentucky hasn’t even been litigated or that good lawyers could gum up the whole process for the 6 months difference between settling the outcome in a special vs general election? Because that is what the Republican lawyers would be doing

Arrrrrrgh!!!!!! What vote? They need 60 to pass legislation. They have more than enough to do whatever else they want without McConnell’s vote! Call them out! Call them liars, frauds, election stealers, tax frauds, criminals. Stop with the strongly worded letters.

Guys, it’s establishment to write strongly worded letters questioning the viability of a sitting senator and to insinuate that action could possibly be taken, then back track totally on that because Republicans already have the votes they need to do whatever they want but somehow this vote matters.

As someone who actually lives in deep red KY, letting McConnell be absent is the best option. 2024 state law bars temp appts & requires a special election. The seat sitting empty to Nov. is better than filling it w/ an R in a special election. We have a veto-proof GOP supermajority. D won’t win.

Dems should just sit back and allow McConnell’s staff, family and the Republican party continue to defraud the American people: you, for an even dumber reason. You actually believe the Governor of Kentucky has no way to independently verify if a sitting senator is still alive.

No, he needs to just appoint an interim senator. If Mitch is still alive (he isn’t), then he can get off his lazy ass and challenge his replacement in the halls of the senate (he won’t, because, again, he’s dead).

No Governor, we don’t want just a “little bit of proof“ of life. McConnell needs to stand the fuck up and dance a Tango to prove he’s capable of doing his fucking job!! It’s what McConnell would demand of any Democrat pulling this same stunt.

I ask again...remember when Gen. Lloyd Austin was in the hospital for 3, I repeat THREE days getting treatment for prostate cancer? The GOPers lost their minds! They called for his resignation! They wanted Biden to fire him. A NJ Repub Cong was missing for 3 MONTHS. Not a peep. Where's McConnell?

He would keep his mouth shut He certainly wouldn't be helping Democrats gain back a vote in the Senate bsky.app/profile/gree...

GreenInOC@greeninoc.bsky.social

Why are these people obsessed with making sure Republicans aren't down a vote in the Senate?🤣 We know they have trouble counting to 67 but you'd think 1 wouldn't be so difficult “𝐋𝐨𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐚 𝐑𝐞𝐩𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐧 𝐯𝐨𝐭𝐞, even for a few weeks…𝐥𝐢𝐤𝐞𝐥𝐲 𝐩𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐲 𝐜𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞𝐬” bsky.app/profile/gree...

Yep, we all agree more needs to be done to reveal the GOP lies. The Dem response looks weak. 100%. Legal Creativity is needed. But the governor can’t steamroll over the fact Mitch must be declared dead for the seat to be vacant for an election. He can’t just appoint. The state GOP made sure of it.

Whatever McConnell would be doing is what Dem leadership should be doing. In spades. Niceties are long over. Instead I’m getting texts from Dem leadership asking me for cash. Right. Not gonna happen. Not fond of flushing money down the toilet. Dems have learned NOTHING!

If the tables were turned, Mitch would already have appointed a Senate replacement (and challenged the legislation ostensibly prohibiting same).

Replacing . They didn’t care. Andy needs to grow a pair. This Schumer strong letter means nothing. Force their hand and make them take you to court

There is an argument that could be made that McConnell taking up a seat without participating is a net positive because when the seat is filled, it will likely be by an R, right? Am I missing something?

If I left my job for 6 weeks without any communication, I would be fired within the first week. Why should he get a pass? He is supposed to be working for the people. If he can't then he needs to be replaced with someone who can.

That's literally the worst thing he could do. Let them be down a republican vote for the next ~6 months. Focus on winning in November. If we win big enough in November, we can change the law in January. Republicans might even vote for it after having been deprived of a vote for ~6 months.
