The people railing about Cowardly Liberals right now really don’t seem to understand how I bet at least 90% of the people who show up to protest would self-identify as if you asked them about their political beliefs

You see, Matt Yglesias says he is a liberal, and he claims to speak for the majority of American liberals. The leftist position is that pseudo-Machiavellian pricks like him are actually correct, and they do speak for the majority of liberals. But also all the conservatives are secretly leftist.

There are indeed "reactionary centerists" (looking at you Cuomo .. and Newsom was going there until his ambition instinct told him to switch it up). I suggest naming them as such, and not using "liberals" for everything. There are even some Nat Cons (Kristol, etc) that are helping.

Reactionary centerists are those that might not like Trump (because of stylistic reasons, perhaps), but before anything else want peace and quiet so they can enjoy their money, and are willing to put up with dictatorship if it doesn't affect them.

There are people who call themselves Liberal and who are liberal on some social issues but who still want to increase funding and power for police and carceral institutions, which end up being used against us all. Wine moms are mostly amazing! A lot "liberal" pundits really suck!

I think it’s safe to say both that it was a common position that “to fix policing we need to make them get way more training, bodycams, selectivity in hiring, etc. which will overall actually involve more funding” and that nearly anyone in the anti-Trump coalition will readily table all that now.

I think that is right! I also think it is important when people come around to certain further-left viewpoints that have been shown to be correct, that we (including myself here!) think about what we were not seeing, and who we were not listening to.

For people that call themselves leftists and yell the slogans so hard, they sure dont seem to give much of a shit about rallying the proletariat to move towards its aims. Just dunking on people for “not” knowing as much as them

I've also noticed American leftists vs everywhere else tend to be very unaware of actual global issues and what lead up to them. Their empathy is strong (unlike republicans) but they jump right in & choose the loudest voices that FELT right to them &

it lead to them feeling this high from perceived social media superiority to the point they went against what the majority within different marginalized voices wanted & needed

(ie how actual Palestinians in Palestine wanted Kamala to win over trump but that's not what reached THEIR algorithms so instead they sat out when it would've been better to keep protesting but also doing everything to make sure trump didn't win instead of just posting on social media)

I have 2 words for those people, who seem to think there is only way to protest and everything else is useless despite reams of evidence to the contrary. Mickey Windecker. If you don't know that name, Google him. He's a total pos and a cautionary tale against both trusting the FBI or dumbasses.

Also season 1 of the podcast alphabet boys is about that scumbag and the protestors he fucked over. Tbf I'm being harsh about the kids he fucked over for profit. They were victims of a set-up and a lot of us would have made those mistakes at their age but still smdh.

This 62 year old white lady used to identify as a Moderate Republican. 5th generation. We believed in small, efficient government, that had no right messing in personal lives. We believed in free speach and the rule of law. Took decades, but mean, stupid, crazy, incompetent fascists stole the GOP.

Since apparently this wasn’t obvious I’m, I am not talking about criticism of elected Democrats. I’m talking about criticism of normal people who are not politicians who identify as liberals.

Yep. And lumping in people that are trying to support the Democratic Party in good faith (because literally there’s no other choice) with the private interest driven politicians is not helpful. Pragmatic liberals do not support genocide which amazingly has to be said. Literally the only choice.

It’s the reverse : many people blame the Left for Kamala Harris’ loss even though most of the Left did vote for her. The choice was a choice like your money or your life. It’s not a choice. You can not blame people for not voting for the genocide of their families Harris was perpetrating.

I didn’t know there was such a rift between liberal vs. progressive vs. lefty until I got on BS. I think a political compass would have me squarely in the “liberal” range, but I’d drive a tank through the White House gates w/ Bill Kristol if I thought it would save our democracy from these fascists.

I am not arguing the other side. I agree with Faine we need mass mobilization and I'll be there. But I think leftist know you'd get in a tank with Bill Kristol. What we don't know is if you'll get in the tank with an anarchist.

Sorry, missed a few comments, but my view is “whatever it takes.” I have no ill will at all towards leftists and think we are all on the same side here. Our coalition has to be broad and we have to do whatever it takes to beat MAGA

That's where the contention lies. I swear to ride into battle with Tom Nichols and Hillary Clinton. Do y'all swear to ride into battle with the kids throwing molotov cocktails at ICE vehicles? That's what happened at Maidan. Complete societal mobilization.

The people railing against "Cowardly Liberals" are talking about elected Democrats, columnists, and self-IDed "liberals" who fantasize about how Republicans are going to murder us queers, not people showing up to protest.

like sorry I simply do not fucking believe your assertion that most people who actually show up to protest aren’t willing to identify themselves as liberals or Democrats (even if they’re really pissed off at Democrat leadership right now, as I imagine most are)

Now is not the time, but I'm curious your thoughts on how to divorce the american definition of liberal from leftism after the dust settles. I agree that most American libs do not know that lib = soft right at best, but it makes it impossible to have a normal convo about how our beliefs differ

and align when I can't call it what its called. I have had some luck getting people over this divide in 1:1 conversations but like... democrat policy helped put us on the road we are on and mostly I just want to get people to see that long enough to consider alternatives

Yeah, I have a bunch of relatives (all technically Boomers!) going to the protests this weekend and I’m pretty sure most of them have no idea about the leftist/liberal divide.

agreed, I think tomorrow’s No Kings events will be refreshingly normie; there’s just a lot of desire for the fight right now (even if Capitol Hill lags the people in this regard)

The average protestor is likely to identify as "liberal" or "very liberal", hate the Democratic Party leadership, and not identify as the same kind of Marxist-Leninist as anyone asking about that.

I don’t hate the Dem leadership yet but I’m getting there. What really bothers me is that the centrists who are even more not there yet, that I know, are black women. And they’ve been carrying the rest of us for too long to be criticized by anyone.

Many of the small town/small city protests and sign waves are organized by the local Dem office. And most participants are the “regulars” from the gatherings of these offices. These groups look pretty different from Big City Dem offices!

The factionalism is rank bullshit, divorced not only from the reality on the ground (the protesters span demography and politics) but also history. This will not and cannot be won by liberals, or leftists, or whatever Bill Kristol is today. It'll be won by all of them in tandem, and nothing else.

I’ve never appreciated the cooler than thou approach to activism. We all start where we are. People who feel an urge to join after you did should not be mocked - they should be welcomed and assisted. To do otherwise continues domination/supremacy patterns.

So many people I spoke to at protests I’ve attended have stated that they were lifelong Republicans. Others were Independents, voting for candidates based on issues. All are outraged.

I am once again begging some people to learn that the prefix "some" exists, and can be used to complain about the specific subgroup of people you want to complain about, without insulting the wider group of people who you don't really have any issues with.

It's just linguistic ambiguity. Leftists complaining about liberals are using the European & Communist sense of "centrist bourgeoisie who likes capitalism and law & order" while US just uses "liberal" to mean "anybody to thinks global warming is real and we should help poor people sometimes."

The problem is "neoliberal" which includes both warmongering, centrist, status-quo idiots in the Democratic Party, and warmongering, right-wing, status-quo idiots in the Republican Party, all of whom are fundamentally against any change. It's not puzzling why leftists want to distance themselves.

Agreed. For a lot of people it isn't some deep commitment to the term, it's just that if you're above a certain age, being left of center has just always been known as being a liberal.

This!!!! Sure, Phil Ochs made fun of liberals from the left, and Rush Limbaugh did so from the right, and at some point “progressive” took over, but when I was growing up, it was just the left side of the line from conservative.

My 70+ year old parents are marching this weekend. They've got fairly left views(Bernie folk) but call themselves liberal democrats. I would literally fight someone if they had a problem with that. My hippie-ass dad has been doing this longer than anyone angry-posting about people like them.

It's a simple question: who do you hate more, Trump or the Libs? If it's Trump, 95% of the people who agree with you are self-identified liberals. If it's the Libs, basically 100% of the people who agree with you are MAGA. Thats where the battle lines have been drawn.

I am convinced that the liberal vs leftist war was a conservative psyop and it was unbelievably successful at shattering unity and strength and weakening the progressive side. We defeat ourselves. THEY ARE RACIST FASCISTS, LETS GET OVER OUR DIFFERENCES AND STOP THEM!

Clear as day. Same folks who invented the name Genocide Joe to concern troll libs. I have not met a liberal who supports genocide being carried out by Bibi’s right wing fascist regime.

This is such a great comparison. I'm "liberal" but I get yelled at by "leftists" here A LOT, and I bet if they asked me my policy presences, they'd be like "but you said you're a liberal? I don't get it."

I actually got into discussing policy preferences with a *very* anti-liberal leftist and it turned out that I was a Nazi because I support strict gun control measures, just like Reagan! Completely incoherent.

and younger leftists, at least the online variant, seem to have gone past not even being aware of how “liberal” was used in common language in the US between Nixon and GW to angrily insisting that no, principal skinner is wrong for using a dictionary

I do wonder sometimes whether younger folks appreciate how deliberate the right-wing framing of "liberals" was, and how ultimately successfully their project was. I suspect the generation wars leads them to discount it, but still. fair.org/home/languag...

fair.org‘Language: A Key Mechanism of Control’Since winning control of Congress, Rep. Newt Gingrich (R.-Ga.) has constantly complained about "destructive" and "negative" coverage from the "liberal elite media." For example, when asked on Nightlin...

The actual number of socialists in the US is tiny and they are so wrapped up in like their one college class of Marx they're completely and utterly impotent. I've met maybe a hundred and the 2 who actually were making change ran as liberals.
