It's actually a sign of a very stupid product design. Make stupid products, get stupid answers. You shouldn't be an apologist for people making stupid products. And definitely shouldn't be an apologist for multi-trillion-dollar companies failing at their basic promise to users.

Nope, you are another one that simply does not understand AI or how it works. Chat history carries forward into future conversations, thus responses to childish prompts will be met with childish answers. That is just the tip of how the algorithm works.

So an actual child asks this question, or someone seriously asking and not that bright, and it’s okay that the response is incorrect because the question is ‘childish’? Why can’t it just respond correctly, regardless of the chat history? Average users just want an answer to their question

Oh I sure do understand. But you just don't know what google dot com is. You think it's a thing billions of people go to in order learn how LLMs work. But it's not. It's a thing they go to expecting to get simple, correct answers quickly. Don't condescend when you simply don't know the market.

I have also worked for Google, and when I did, the company's values included: If the user misspells their query, that's our problem If the user doesn't know the search terms to use, that's our problem I'm not sure when it became "stupid questions get stupid answers" but that is not an improvement.

I have no doubt that you've worked for Google. It shows in your arrogance. Many, many people who worked at Google do not understand its purpose in society or culture. Google should, actually, always return the correct answer to simple math questions. And you're a fucking idiot for arguing otherwise.

i once worked with a kid who wrote his own sort algorithm. was actually more efficient than quicksort. a truly amazing feat of algorithmic design. also it was nondeterministic and only usually gave correct results. he was a super duper smarty pants

I'm just gobsmacked that people are trying to justify this in any way. My 6-yo asks Claude how many days since his bday to see if he is 6 and ½. This is not stupid at all. "Just arithmetic". If he did this with Google would he get the right answer? And is it ok if he didn't? No, it is not ok.

Google once had a dead simple design that allowed users to just ask a question and be one-link away from the answer near the top of the first page of results. That was the product. I'm unsure what the product is now.

that checks out

google is shit now for lots of reasons an underrated one is it’s a cult. and thus it employs a bunch of insecure crybabies who meltdown when facing sincere criticism, instead of people who actually know how to do their jobs

Hey, I worked for Google for 10 years, and it embarrasses me that the Onebox now lies to people. Google's mission is (or was) to organize the world's information and making it accessible and useful. It's not to distort and lie about that information. Gross.

I remember when someone asked Sergey Brin why search quality was important, and he cited a story of a man Googling for heart attack symptoms. Google may have saved his life -- he even said it: "THAT'S why we have to get it right." You wanna bet we can get Gemini to get it wrong?

"Responses to childish prompts will be met with childish answers" Glad to know that there's a non-random chance that when I ask Google a factual question it will reply BOFA DEEZE NUTZ because ***my dude do you not know how Boaty McBoat Face happened***

Jeff, you're the one who doesn't understand how this works. Anil typed his query into search, not chat. Although both of these are stored by default, Gemini chat history doesn't include search history. Gemini doesn't have access to your Google search history at all. So, you're 100% wrong.

I'm a professional Data Scientist working on machine learning applications. I've built language models, & deployed agentic applications using them. I'd say I have more direct experience than you do. but hey, I encourage you to not believe me - go ask Gemini whether it can access your search history.

They're making a mainstream product for regular people. If it's worse at basic maths than the regular, decades old, search product, it has failed on many fronts. The fact it is being promoted as better than search rather than carrying the classic Google 'beta' badge, shows how far Google have fallen
