There's no "controversy" over The Witcher 4, it's just gotten picked up in what is now a cottage industry of YouTube-based outrage content farming by people who have zero actual investment in or understanding of the things they cover multiple times a day, every day

Somehow this has become the way to make a sustainable living producing gaming content online, but if you're interested in writing thoughtful analysis and critique, the kind that takes literacy and hard work, well don't quit your day job

It's wall-to-wall garbage all the time, and if it's not wails about a lady being the main character, it's tedious technical complaints about how many reflections of Spider-Man you can see in the puddles. Anything interesting that anyone might have to say about any game has been shoved to the margins

Reactionary weirdos latch onto anything that gets them views. When that gets enough attention, the remoras at shit-tier game outlets make it a controversy so THEY can benefit from the outrage against the reactionaries, which also SPREADS the reactionary views. It’s engagement bait all the way down.

Societally, there’s a benefit to ignoring the goons who whine about woke [insert subject here]. But from a profit standpoint, it’s better to be the first (or loudest) to amplify every shitty voice you find, just so you can get the attention of those opposed to the goons, (and the goons responding).

I don't want to erase the work my friends and former colleagues are doing in this space. There IS good games content out there but I'm frustrated by how difficult it is for the good stuff to actually drive the discussion or change the narrative, to refocus away from the unending drumbeat of rage

Outrage is one of the easiest ways to drive engagement. You'll find it on any platform that rewards engagement. Rewarding engagement is basically a short road to a toxic, negative platform. It's not just the social networks though -news networks have learned this too and it is self selecting.

The thing is, having watched this evolve: It's not (for all of them) that they don't know how or what to cover, it's that what they're doing - making rage takes - IS their coverage/content, not the games. They're not really "covering" media, they're making competing content.

Even if one finds an actual good video, youtube then just gives you tons of discourse bait suggestions and won't stop... it really is hard to find videos that actually have anything to say

The never ending need for more content slop to secure an ever dwindling share of the attention economy Ya know games journalists used to work in zany offices and only had to crank out 16 pages of content every month and they got health insurance for that?

Thank you pal. I do miss doing them but the opportunities were becoming rarer and rarer and they were getting encroached by bullshit rules about maximizing SEO potential. Like the first two paragraphs almost had to be garbage by the time I left PCGN

You are 100% right, but blusky's architecture could be the way out of this very problem. Bottom up arcitechure and interaction, instead of top down shit filled firehoose. Still work to do to get to that comparitive utopia from here but this platform makes me much more hopeful.

Can you believe it, there was this big YouTuber fan of Baldurs gate that wanted Witcher to be turned into a turn based game like bg3….. guess who that was. Its not a hard guess.

Perhaps the solution is simply to make spaces and promote the really good stuff. Let the outrage slop die of starvation or live on an island. The industry needs a place where that kind of content is not allowed and properly curated. It will never be YouTube while it is ad revenue based.

None of these grifters care about things that make games objectively worse, like the unhinged greed, mass layoffs and dismantling of one talented team after another. If anything it fills them with schadenfreude.

There is an army of small time YouTubers with like 50-150k subscribers who NEED to churn out 15-20 minutes of outrage content EVERY DAY and it is destroying whatever is left of the social fabric.

The ones I HATE more than anything are the videos that will have a title about some current event that should take 30 seconds to explain and they will literally go into 45 minutes of background history of the people involved when it's totally irrelevant to the issue at hand.

If most gamers relied on YouTube-based or any game "outrage," there'd be no game industry. It's all smoke for clicks & shadow publicity. Personally, after seeing that trailer, I'm really looking forward to playing it, as I think most gamers and Witcher game series (or book) fans are & would be. :)

They didn’t finished the game… because if they had, they would have known this was where the game was going… I didn’t read the book and figured that out… the entire Witcher 3 was looking for her 🫠🫠

i've been wondering about this youtube thing recently. i was watching videos about people being upset about this or that. but recently i saw a similar thing about some product being an absolute disaster and crashing after launch. but i saw the reviews were "mostly positive" so...weird. :-)

It's amazing how easy it is also to just, not even be remotely connected to that whole world anymore simply by not engaging on X. I genuinely didn't know it was happening, although I did assume it was

I didn’t even know there was hate about it til late last night and I was like, of course. Just let them be. The internet in itself is full of hate and I feel like it’s thrown the world to a shitstorm. We need to start spreading love instead!

As a fan of Witcher 1 & 3 (not 2, though), I am looking forward to 4. The trailer looked terrific. Why outrage? Because the protagonist is female? Isn't that a bit puerile? And over the first trailer, not even a demo, let alone gameplay? *sigh*

It's disheartening as someone who does want to do video game content at some point. Seeing the absolute grime get such traction makes me wonder if anyone would care about an honest conversation regarding this medium.

If you want to hear about a REAL controversy, then you might want to hear about how Catly is an AI slop and NFT shilling game that probably paid crazy amounts of money for Pokimane and Ninja to promote it.

I honestly really hate how things like rage bait seems to give a dopamine high, because it seems like even trying to have a normal conversation online is an exercise in futility. Honestly I'm about to give up on reddit entirely after 10+ years because of this. Though I do find this place to be good.

Truth. There is probably people myself included who would have preferred to play as Geralt because I generally don't like switching protagonists in series. Same reason I don't want an Atreus God of War game. But I can be surprised. Ghost of Yotei switching protagonist is 100% the right call.

I’m fascinated by the psychology and socioeconomic aspects of this modern phenomenon. It’s not that hard to figure out; the goal is fame and fortune, picking a negative path even if ultimately destructive, can achieve those goals.

Are we to overlook the fact that an adult woman had undergone some surgeries with a high fatality rate and are intended for children? I assume the main reason why the grasses trial is done at a young age is to allow the mutations to mature as the apprentices grow to adulthoof

Who are these misanthropes screaming about video game ladies not being hot/young enough and why aren't they more ashamed of their existence? It's beyond me man, how can you just scream about your social deviancy online like it's not super embarrasing? They need to touch grass pretty badly

I’d agree with you if Gen Z men didn’t primarily vote for Trump, a win partly attributed to him meeting up with fucking Kai Cenat. These people aren’t a loud minority, they’re an annoying majority. And they all seem to be young as hell dudes worshipping 40 somethings as their gods.

Streamers like Asmon, CD, Quarter…, they’re just rage farming shits who know they can make money off of dumb incels. Asmon straight up tells his viewers they’re idiots and he’s a scam artist and always will be, then he goes back to rage farming about how some character model looks too manly.

I don't even really care about the series, but I guarantee my wife will play the game and likely enjoy it. She loves the TV Show and The Witcher 3. Whether she'll finish the game or not is a different story. She has a bad habit of picking up a game and not finishing it because another comes along 🤣

Ragebait is really getting old. I know it has always been here, it just seems like it's gotten more prevalent since the old farts started using the Internet in the early 2000's.

I have nothing to add, but wanted to say thanks. Really well said. Puts to words for me what's so frustrating about online discourse around this medium we love.

On the positive side, there are a lot more men and women who are fans of The Witcher overwhelmingly excited that Ciri will be the protagonist. The anti-woke mob can cry all they want, but CDPR is going to deliver the most spectacular performance, and I'm so here for it!

Ding-ding-ding, absolutely correct. I've been saying it forever, but actively disengaging from rage bait (and doing it collectively(?)) is the easiest way to make the internet less shitty.

Day in and day out it's outrage. Living your life in constant anger, creating angry videos or articles, whatever, to shell out to people just as angry as you are to make money off of being mad at a woman or minority or both being the main character in a video game or show or movie.

If they’re complaining about Ciri, an individual who in the lore (books and games) has the elder blood which makes her potentially one of the strongest characters in that universe being a strong female protagonist, than they have rocks for brains. Ciri has been badass since 1992. This isn’t recent.

Just to reiterate, in the books, Ciri escaped capture from a clan of dimension-hopping elves by herself and then jumped to a reality where she met the knights of King Arthur’s court and then casually met the Lady of the Lake. But sure, she’s not protagonist material. Ok then outrage farmers.

I've seen the argument shopped around that it's "impossible" for her to become a witcher because she can't undergo the trial of the grasses which really seems to miss the concept of what a witcher is, why the trials exist, and what's possible if you can travel across dimensions

This is one of those “half truth” type deals. She’s definitely been trained in martial combat by Witchers, but IMO even if she underwent the trial it probably wouldn’t change her very much. Her body is already coursing with power. If anything it would probably just her a nasty hangover.

Seriously. I'm guessing none of these guys played 3. Geralt literally had to save her from The Wild Hunt and train her to be a Witcher. It makes total sense if anyone ever actually played.

Lonely basement dwellers just can't comprehend the kind of escapist fantasy the Witcher franchise is. It's not about being the most badass hero, it's about how your child is not some college dropout barista, not even a doctor or a lawyer, she is The Most Important Person In The World!

I really dislike this new culture warrior YouTube rage farming meta we’re seeing. I struggle to call myself I gamer when this is how gamers make themselves known on the internet.

There are many non-controversies that hit the news cycle. And I typically ignore it until it's permeated every single thing and I have to comment in some fashion.

I'm so tired of women protagonists in games because I'm tired of grown adults being whiny babies about them existing. I just don't have the energy anymore to battle stupid.

Yeah. I asked my "woke hating" step dad for his opinion and he gushed about how excited he was for this game and how bad ass Ciri is. The "controversy" is just among the brain rotted weirdos. Can't wait for this game.

It's true. It's like certain people have a checklist of things "the internet" apparently doesn't like, and when they see it, they post about how the situation's gotten crazy. But like, go outside. Idk a single person actually upset about this.

People are attracted to stupidity and outrage. That says a lotabout them, doesn't it? But at the same time, the company producing the product wins, because more people are talking about their product. Nobody was going to watch Velma, but then the hate watchers made the show popular for a bit.

Its infuriating for a bunch of reasons but to me the big one is that it doesnt fucking serve anyone except (maybe) shareholders of social media corporations. They are letting themselves get organized around a predatory algorithm that loses more of its power each passing day.

I’m so tired of it. I used to eat up outrage content years ago, and then one day I was like “this is making me miserable, I want to enjoy things again” and have never looked back. Consuming more positive focused media seriously helps a ton with one’s mindset.

Popular fallout channels shitting in Fallout 3 and praising new Vegas. I was already watching the channels before they pivoted and then I was like “yeah, screw that game!” And kept chasing that short term enjoyment.

I think mine was Yongyea. I stopped watching dude years ago but think of that name made me look him up and nothings really changed since then. Rage grifting content is so easy to get into when you're passionate about something that often times you dont realize you fell down the rabbit hole.

Lotta people who never read the books to begin with. I'm just upset they are making her a Witcher when in the books she wasn't one, a cool new way of playing/discovering her elderblood ruined tbh.

Because the scourge of genAI is as much symptom as cause/catalyst. Understanding, much less expertise, have no place in the economy of endless, mindless consumption of "the next thing that looks like things I like". Where any combo of "my precious" and "my politics" finds a purveyor.

The whole story of the Witcher (books and games) literally revolves around Ciri, if they had any investment in the franchise they would be super excited to see Ciri finally get a story all on her own.

Yeah, I try to ignore those gross channels when ever I see them. They're just bait after the views and they never planned to play the game they're bashing on. Dragon quest 3hd is an example

Youtube loves promoting outrage, especially discriminatory. If you watch a clip of a movie or a game, your recommendations get filled with these trojan horse ass "critiques". No one's allowed to enjoy media, you HAVE TO GET MAD ABOUT IT.

My dad has gone down an unfortunate right wing media spiral and now watches gamer rage content even though he doesn’t play the games and then argues with me that “everyone disagrees with me” about a game. He does the same thing with the marvel and Star Wars tv shows (he watches the movies)

The divide between the Marvel comics fanbase and the movie fan base must be appreciable. Xmen being accused of "going woke" is so fucking derisive if you know anything about the setting. Even Warhammer 40k - grim setting, but it was satire made by British *Labour* voters. "Omg woke!" Please.

I haven’t read the comics so I can’t say I’m like a true comic fan. But I watch all the tv shows. 40k I’ve read a ton of the books. So I’m a fan of the shows/books I consume and he doesn’t even do that but thinks I’m wrong to like what I’m watching/reading bc he watched a YouTube video

*thumbnail of the Critical Drinker trying to look hard by fake-drinking from a very closed bottle of Jack Daniels* "They're just so fragile about being WOKE and DEI that I'm gonna have to make 5 million more vids about how fundementally this upsets me... ..sniff... ... I'm not crying, you are..."

You'd think after the Barbie movie became the highest grossing film of the previous year we could finally lay to rest the notion that somehow women or LGBTQ+ representation will cause a piece of media to be unsuccessful, but I guess that would require the chuds to start living in reality.

Nah, they started doing insane mental gymnastics to somehow prove that Barbie's success was in line with their beliefs. Just like how they flipped on Space Marine 2 when it turned out that a Trans fan of the Warhammer franchise could in fact write a good Warhammer game

The guys at the top of this ecosystem never bother even engaging in any discussion, it's all completely hit-and-run. They agitate and then move on to the next thing, and it doesn't matter that their initial 48 hours of whining doesn't make sense or is based on complete misunderstandings

They don't even care enough to watch an entire Monster Hunter trailer, that's the level they're on with this. They flag something, scream about it, and move onto the next thing

It's been like this for years and it's so tiresome I gave up on YouTubers doing any sort of reviews. Got threatened with legal action when I called out one such person doing a video as to why their whole view of a certain game was objectively incorrect... they have very fragile egos at times too

Yeah I was basically contacted by someone on their behalf and asked to take stuff down. Used coded language for there being likely consequences if I didn't retract statements. Asked bluntly if they meant being sued, and called their bluff. It was not a giant youtuber or channel, but...

big enough in the community which basically created the owners entire youtube career. Basically an unknown till a certain game came out about 10 years ago After about 2 years or so of generally neutral content, the guy figured out his videos got more hits if he just ragged on everything...

I've come to ignore/block screeds that begin with complaints about whether a character is Black, a woman, gay, or not a white male. In my mind, these people understand the algorithm is responding to them and they are so desperate for attention, once they start, they can't stop. I value my peace.

I'm absolutely stoked to play as Ciri. She's like if Geralt and Yennefer put all their skills into one person. And as with the whole series, they're keeping the "are the monsters the creatures or the people?" theme strong as shown by the villagers in the trailer.

That trailer was literally the sickest thing I’ve ever fucking seen. I’ve watched it like 127 times. Also anyone who read the books and saw the phrase “little Witcher girl” throughout the whole thing, is not upset by Ciri being the protagonist. The real fans know she *been* a killer.

Just because I hate my life, I popped onto Reddit's witcher3 sub and found... everybody just posting What Is Wrong With People Ciri Looks Great And This Is The Natural Direction For The Game. And basically no complaints apart from the rare downvoted troll.

Same with the new Naughty Dog game. I've barely seen any criticism that goes beyond "main character bald" 🙄 (I'm cautious because of the product placements, but love the retro sci-fi vibe)

That’s the true criticism of that trailer, it was less a trailer and more a paint-by-numbers ad for Sony. The 80s Neon-futurism aesthetic is one I’ll always fall for, but as to actually hyping us for a game the trailer fell flat.

The end of the trailer do hint at some more action then the past games. I am giving the benefit of the doubt that it's also their reasoning for not just saying "from the creators of The Last of Us", but rather their earlier games as well. Though it could also be empty marketing. Time will tell 😅

I call them 'Outrage Tourists', these late 20s-40s men who do nothing but whinge online about how woke everything is. It was about time for them to move on after picking the Dragon Age: Veilguard nontroversy clean.

I just watched a video that seemed reasonable at first - and then tried to "both sides" the "uglification of female characters controversy." The comments were, predictably, mostly brainrot.
