i think it’s not talked about enough that so many christian rightwingers support israel because they want to trigger the end times rapture and they believe supporting israel will ensure this

I say this having grown up in evangelical churches in the south - you are giving too much credit to the average churchgoer for that kind of belief. Occam’s razor applies here: they support Israel because that’s what everyone like them does. Political inertia.

There's a new-ish @swordsjew.bsky.social book that covers this and more. I vividly remember a middle-school fundie kid (unsure if he was a believer or just stuck in a fundie home) explaining, "The Late Great Planet Earth," to me and how modern Israel's 1948 formation was CRITICAL. 🙃

Okay, you're a mile ahead of me

starting off with “red heifers” never makes you feel sane but somehow this is something like half of any republican government in the last 50 years believes

My dad listened to exclusively christian talk radio when I was growing up and holy fuck going back and contextualizing what they actually meant with shit like this as an adult is terrifying (went to private school too, they taught us the end times and destruction of the world was A GOOD THING)

They don’t even hide this, it’s 100% about that. Another less interrogated question, I think, is the fact that in “mainstream” evangelical prophecy circles — such as one even exists — it’s generally agreed that the US is not a character in the story, if it even exists at the second coming.

So I’ve been thinking today about whether a strain of that thought might be infecting and informing some Republican Christians’ enthusiasm to literally destroy the country, led by God’s emissary Donald Trump.

I try to bring up every chance that I get that most Zionists are Christians and that they are exploiting the "conflict" in Israel (genocide). Zionist Christians fetishize Jews because it is their belief that they are are God's chosen people, but AT THE SAME TIME they want to convert them to.

Christianity is an apocalypse cult, and I am so happy I got out of it, even as late in life as I did. It's a structure that makes it almost impossible to internalize those kinds of thoughts with all its built-in safeguards and thought-terminating cliches until you can see it from the outside.

They literally say this. It’s not a conspiracy or anything. And on the same note I think a lot of their actions are driven out of fear of going to hell

Not only is it not biblical it isn’t kind.. if they really believe this nonsense then surely they should be praying for more time to save everyone. But no, they don’t give a monkeys arse about anyone but themselves. If it were true, I think this would rule them out.

This. It's not Biblical...and it's damn sure not aspirational. Even in their own teachings there is nothing there to say that the people who bring about the Apocalypse are going to be treated any different than false prophets and thieves in the temple.

This and their obsession with destroying the environment. It really feels like they're trying to force it to happen sooner. Might even explain Trump's rise to power, enough dipshits wishing he was the anti-christ so they blindly follow him to 'make' him qualify.

and uhhhh forgive me if I’m wrong but doesn’t it also mean that every Israeli jewish person holding down Israel for the Evangelical End Times will be sent to hell? Or is there some kind of biblical buddy pass that I’m not aware of for “the good ones”

The biggest Zionist organisation in the world is Christian and in the USA. They don’t care about Jews! They want to reclaim Jerusalem, rebuild the temple, and sacrifice a red heifer being bred for the purpose. Then: the end of the world!

For reals… unless you lived in this crazy town.. you just can’t understand ..They also believe that they are Gods people and we have to support them… listening to my mom on this nonsense would make your head hurt…. These nutters believe that their salvation is based on what happens to Israel..

My mom is a Christian right-winger, and i can confirm she thinks this. She says, "Isreal is the holy land and the Israelis are gods chosen people, and they can do no wrong in the eyes of the Lord." Meaning they can comit a genocide in front of her and she will still defend them.

And then you explain how that is not a goos thing and she doubles down and says "Well, jesus is coming back soon anyways." It all comes back full circle to them. They want their mass extinction fantasy and they want it now.

Years ago before I knew much about American politics I watched the speech of my favorite German poltical comedian after receiving a price and he talked about this whole thing and that he sees it as an actual danger because those people are so well connected. I thought he'd lost it, but well...

And now I just live with this knowledge that there are incredibly well financed and well connected religious fanatics who could basically end humanity in nuclear fire. Also: "They destroyed themselves because of religious fanaticism" sounds like some lazy worldbuilding, so could we not do that?

Why do they want this? They are objectively worse Christians than your average liberal atheist… do they honestly believe they are going up?

The people who believe this also believe that their name was written in the Book of Life the moment they accepted Christ as their lord and savior, and that nothing they ever do — short, perhaps, of renouncing their faith — can erase it. How fortunate for them!

Ah. That makes sense. Religious Fundamentalists are a complete mystery to me. Seems like many of them have never actually read the books their religions are based on. Then they have a go at me for believing in one fewer God than they do.

My ex had been raised areligious, and was horrified and bewildered when I would tell him things I had been taught as a child. And my upbringing wasn’t at all fundamentalist — these ideas are mainstream in American Christianity.

the best thing I've found for breaking the news to people is just keeping my sources on-hand and even that don't work tbh, like it's like, trying to explain the business plot to a normie, it just sounds unbelievable even tho it literally happened.

being able to remember the words "premillenial dispensationalism" helps some, gives em something to look up and see ur not crazy at least, but even that's like, hard to get people to look into and can run the risk of sounding pretentious like saying "pallingenetic ultranationalism"

As a jew I talk about it all the time, and even other lefties and socialists are shocked by this info like 70% of the time. It's insanity, and while I am normal about most religions, I will do reddit atheism against evangelicals and other christian zionists

*Supporting Israel up to the moment they use them as a blood sacrifice to trigger the end times... It's like bringing a guest to a fancy dinner because you know that your professor friend always enjoys when you bring something for dessert.

I actually grew up at a Christian school amd had a teacher tell me this exact sentiment. He believed America's success was solely because we were meant to support Israel so they could enact the war that brings upon the end times. Extremely depressing stuff. There's a reason I escaped that shit.

Even coming from a relatively tamer strain of Evangelicalism, i was taught that Jews won’t be saved from Hell, but in the Tribulation (reign of the Antichrist) a faction of Israeli Jews will convert to Christianity This is mainstream Evangelical interpretation of Revelation and other apocalyptica

mormons believe that the end times will start when americans stops supporting Israel. I grew up hearing this a lot. some of them see the Palestine liberation movement as a sign.

They want war because the second temple can't be built until the Dome of the Rock is destroyed. They don't necessarily even support Israel so much they just want war there because they believe it's the first step in brining about the second coming.

Third temple actually! It's also a problem among far right religious Jews, who have been trying to get all the ritual implements together and have literally been breeding red cows in the hopes of getting hold of the Red Heifer, whose ashes are needed to purify temple priests I wish I were joking

Matthew 24:36 says not even the angels in heaven know the day or the hour… I am paraphrasing of course.. but the GOP supporting Israel 🇮🇱 is not needed to trigger the rapture… right wing “Christians” need to read the Bible more before they speak such nonsense… 🙄

A critical number of people in the corridors of political power and their gerrymandered voter base believe that if enough Jewish blood is spilled, they can summon Jesus like a demon and direct him to kill their enemies, but no one in the press dares call them cultists

Seriously, how dumb can you really be, nobody's going to trigger the end times except God himself. With that being said Palestine doesn't want their own state, they want the total DESTRUCTION of Israel and Iran wants it as well. There will never be peace until there is no more Israel.

It also bares mentioning that Trump shares A LOT of similarities with the prophetic depictions of the Antichrist - more than probably most or any figure in public history, but the same apocalypse-obsessed Christians conveniently look the other way on that - possibly for the same reasons.

Like when you’re playing hide & seek with a small child who’s obviously bad at hiding. “Oh, is there an antichrist here? I don’t SEE him… where oh where could he be? I sure hope he doesn’t trigger a rapture before I find him! That would be sooo scary!”
