Here is the list of Socialist Countries - only 1 offers free college. I'd say Socialism failed. There are dozens of Capitalist countries with free college - the US isn't one of them so WE failed. The Nordics are Capitalist genius. Which one of these do you want to be North Korea?

I think you’re confusing socialist countries with socialist programs. There is a huge difference. Medicaid is a socialist program. That doesn’t make us a socialist country. If you look at countries that do provide free education you’ll find that they have several socialist programs

While there are MANY Capitalist countries which provide free college there is only 1 Socialist country that does - Cuba. China doesn't by the way. Think I'm wrong? Send me your list. I sent you mine of Capitalist countries. The USA failed - not Capitalism. Stop misleading people

Capitalisim fails? How come MANY Capitalist countries provide free or subsidized education? And how do you not know that or why do you deny it? The US failed not Capitalism - fun fact the Nordics are Capitalist - Social Democracies not Socialist worldpopulationreview.com/country-rank...

Well maybe we don't need athletes or people who major in physical education. Most of them don't make big money. Only a small percentage actually cash in.

So the president of a country is "banning" (how? By fiat? Show your work) student loans based on degree? Yeah that seems totally legal, just a legal thing POTUS can do, you fucking spineless chuds. Great "reporting", you fucking hack.

They should just enter "general studies". How many young people change their majors in the course of their college studies? This is arbitrary and capricious. No one knows how much they will make when they get out of college. How many engineer majors worked fast food after graduation?

It is doubtful tax dollars will bail out private liberal arts colleges. It is more likely that even more of them will go out of business like the 50 or so that have closed or planning to close since 2020.

I have not one -but two- fine art degrees & my critical thinking skills are such that I can say this: if this administration were really concerned about student debt & folks being able to support themselves, they would strive to make higher ed affordable for all, no matter the major.

Apart from the ethics and stupidity of it, in a practical sense how will this actually work for the many colleges where you don't have to declare a major right away? If at the end of sophomore year you decide to major in art history, and it's below the cut-off, do they claw back 2 years of loans?

large institutions will be able to make the numbers work, ie Yale Divinity and RISD etc won't be effected. this will contribute to collapse of small regional schools that already have a murky future.

Well, I guess that a majority of Americans are Ok with this (51%+) or dgaf. Which is great for the rest of us in the world. This takes the USA out of the competition. Plenty of countries that don't have this infliction. And it could happen where I live, but unlikely. Sorry to see this happen there.

If they weren't trying to kill fields that teach students to think critically about such things as politics & humanity they would not be looking at entry level jobs, they would be looking at the rates of repayment. Also, during a teaching shortage they are cutting teacher training.

Checking it at 4 years is evidence they are not serious. In many of these fields those people aren't even past entry level jobs, if that. That doesn't tell you what they might make even 5-10 years later

I took out a loan to get my Masters in Teaching. I was a double major Art & Social Studies & taught US History for 3 years & Art for 20 years. It took 15 years to pay off my loan. I was OK with that because I was doing what I loved. Sounds like drumpf would disallow that from ever happening.💔😢

This is some actual fucking bullshit. I fucking hate this POS POTUS and the slavering fucking jackles that surround him who are all actively working to make life and our nation worse.

I’m just a small-town country lawyer, but wouldn’t this piss off private lenders something fierce? They love saddling people with life-ending debt, and this would cut into their profit margins steeply.

“The government shouldn’t punish people who pursue socially valuable callings just because in its judgment they don’t earn enough money,” said Gregory Baylor, senior counsel at Alliance Defending Freedom, a Christian nonprofit that the Southern Poverty Law Center lists as a designated hate group.

everything, just everything is because we are living in Reagan‘s economy -the rise of private equity, billionaire class, defunding college education, insane military spending, union busting. It’s all Reagan -

Calling these degrees “unprofitable“ is a ruse. They are mostly female dominated professions that give women independence. Republicans don’t like that. RN (Registered Professional Nurse) is female dominant profession. This administration took “professional” out of the title to belittle women, again.

Sigh. OF COURSE it will be all about $$$$. It’s the only thing they understand. Everything else is useless. The things to eliminate are the things that make us more human, more in touch with our humanity. We certainly can’t have THAT, right?

The Proles do not need any education that doesn't further their usefulness to the State. Workers need to read, write in block print, and do basic math. All higher thought processes will be handled by oligarch controlled AI systems. A liberal arts education is a threat to the new Techno-state.

Wake up people! Authoritarian's formula to ease their take over. The Arts, Education, and social justice are the soul of a democracy. My daughter (social worker) and husband (Presbyterian minister) are doing just fine as they put their 2 children through college.

Sadly in today's America a person's worth is measured by the amount of money the make or wealth they have accumulated and not by the contribution he/she may have made or may one day make to the country and society.

I would love to know what, if any data, they used for comparison between people with these degrees and those people who did not go to college. How were the groups defined, etc.?

14th amendment says he isn't the president, and it's doubtful even a legitimate president has any unilateral authority to rewrite these eligibility regs. But nobody with legitimate power seems willing to enforce the constitution anymore, so 🤷‍♂️

Im stuck on social work. There is a shortage of mental health professionals and they want to cut off loans that encourage more people to pursue social work. Brilliant. Also social workers are clearly underpaid.

And excellent teachers, IT professionals, marketers, managers, entrepreneurs... or, horror of all horrors, excellent successful professional musicians! We cannot abide a system where only the rich are allowed to study what they will, and everyone else needs to pick a Practical Vocation at 18 or else

USA is a dystopian world Here, the most expensive private schools, the top of the top of the top, usually cost a THIRD of the average student loan in the US Public university, which most people attend, is a TENTH of the average US student loan It's by no means perfect, far from it, but still better

???????????? we need people doing these jobs! literally what are schools and hospitals and shelters and child welfare and nursing homes and and and supposed to do for a workforce?

The only knowledge that matters is the kind that leads to profit. The natural end of every conversation about kids needing to pursue "practical" degrees is a society where teaching and theology require coming from a wealthy family.

This isn’t just about attacking gendered disciples/fields - history tells us that when only upper class white girls become social workers, the profession focuses on moralising & attacking racialized and poor families. Our profession needs workers with lived experience of social policy’s harms!

Hmm, and why don't those fields make "enough" money? Could it be they aren't valued in our society because they don't simply make more money for other people? Also, to become a licensed social worker, one needs a Master's degree.

Are they planning on addressing the women’s wage gap? In fields that are majority women, pay is less, & that’s not because the jobs aren’t necessary to a healthy society. It’s almost as if they want us back in the Stone Age, because that’s where we’re headed.

🏫 Well then find a school, well-enough endowed, like mine, damn fool enough to treat us as scholars📜, and give us full scholarships in the arts and humanities. 🎓

Yet another Nazi playbook type move. Kill off any intellectual pursuits regarding art, music history and culture in favour of more profitable endeavours to enhance the new US Fatherland.

All the calamity is blatant and disturbing 😳…. In the words of the poet Maya Angelou “When someone shows you who they are believe them the first time”.

I kinda think it’s a good idea from the wrong administration. Loans are a lousy way to fund degrees whose purpose isn’t finding a high paying job. They should just be subsidized directly, IMO. Not that trump will do that.

How freaking short sited is this? Billionaires refuse to pay people, so noone can pick up the trade, and all the immigrants are gone—- so, What morons

There is never a bottom with him. There is no aspect of our culture that he doesn’t think he can “improve” in the same way a toddler with a new set of markers wants to “beautify” everything 🤦‍♂️

FTA. I'm sitting in a room right now with 2 of the best people on planet earth who have degrees in religion & library science respectively and they've spent their lives helping people and building bridges of cultural understanding in the Middle East and elsewhere. Trump isn't fit to tie their shoes.

So stupid. I have an English degree. I became a programmer and project manager. The degree does not determine the job you will have or the money you will make. Also, we need social workers, English teachers, museum workers, etc. These are valuable professions even if they're not lucrative

I'm surrounded by STEM degrees, who rely on my dept of liberal arts majors to communicate w/customers. Also your undergraduate degree isn't always the field you work in, it's a stepping stone to grad school or a job that just wants proof you can complete something. This is stupid policy.

Also, the economic outlook for each of these degrees change with a changing economy. The job prospects for stem are terrible right now too. Guess that means that no one can to to college anymore.

This is the thing that I think will screw up this whole endeavour. They're using a four year time period to determine what jobs make enough money...at a time when no one is hiring entry level and most people who get these degrees are really struggling to find and keep relevant work.
