I'm worried that the lesson our government is going to take from this is that 16 years is about 15 too many to allow anything close fair elections to continue after gaining power. But for the moment, I'd still rather be us than them.

Says a lot when even the fascist dictator who followed the textbook to the letter and nearly completely overthrew democracy STILL has a more gracious exit than the US president. God, I hope minute one of the new government is undoing literally everything he did so this never happens again.

Going to be honest. Did not expect it to be smooth, regardless of the result. I thought Orban would go full "If I can't do this the easy way, we'll do it the hard way" once the loss was confirmed. Thank god, we didn't need another world crisis right now.

Viktor Orban accomplished so much of what the Trump movement wants to accomplish here he ruled for 16 years and rewrote the rules in his favor and still, they threw him out and you know what? they did it by voting don’t let anyone tell you voting doesn’t matter

The time when the adversary is at their most flagrantly evil and bumbling is the best time to offer the strongest positive vision you can possible present, because while a ham sandwich could do better, winning by a (genuine) landslide will let you actually fix things.

And not to be a dick, but they did it by voting in a united front for a deeply flawed conservative candidate. But now the entrenched fash are out of power, and the left can get to work moving the country forward *and* to the left.

A deeply flawed conservative candidate who nevertheless pledged consequences for the corrupt ultraconservatives, yes. Lets make sure that is understood to be a mandatory expectation from whatever flawed candidate we end up with. Flawed but fighting is better than a million strongly worded letters.

competitive authoritarianism is bad but it is absolutely still beatable if you show up in large enough numbers november is step one for us

In competitive authoritarianism, leaders abuse state power to tilt the electoral playing field in their favor, manipulate the media environment and minimize opposition voices, maybe even steal close elections by lying about fraud. But they usually can't overcome a large majority voting against them.

I would argue that step one is the primaries. A lot of Democrats in DC have been complacent because they know their district/state will vote blue. Threatening them in primaries is the only way to make them do their job. Look at how well it's working out for NYC. People need to start voting *now*.

This election is the proof that competitive authoritarianism is still a lot better than regular authoritarianism, rather than being a more entrenched version of it based on being able to fake democratic legitimacy

Totally agree, but I worry that Orban's long rule has left a scar. I worry that, as with the United States, it will take a dozen genius politicians and a concerted effort over many years to undo the damage.

👏👍if anyone thinks their vote doesn’t count look to this election for a perfect example that it does. and this is why republicans are trying to cheat and going after free and fair elections.

…It really bothers me how cynical I have become. Past 10 years of Politics are telling me this is too good to be true. Either Orban has some underhanded scheme, or any moment now Trump will deliver an ultimatum: If Tisza doesn’t concede to Orban the US will reinstate him by force.

Yeah, this is just being too cynical to be believed. Russia doesn't have the forces left to pull a fast one, and the US removed many troops from Europe already. Too many votes are already counted and there were plenty of shenanigans already pulled. They shot their bolt and failed anyway.

to be... ugh, fair, to Orban conceding and fucking off promptly might be his best shot at getting away from most of the consequences i don't know him or hungary or anyone else there well enough to know but some villains can eventually realize it's time to run
