It's basically a series of escalating bad possiblities I'm edgy! I have never experienced anything outside of my extremely narrow bubble I'm rich enough I think politics are optional I really, REALLY want the hatred You have no idea how much self hate I have, and I'm going to make it your problem.

Interestingly, I haven’t seen the local College Republicans tabling on campus since early/mid 2025. They used to do so fairly often. Wonder if they’re having trouble recruiting / retaining members.

I don't want to detract from your point about Republican dipshittery but a real missed opportunity here to say "but then he got off on the ground floor and I kept.going to the parking levels"

This kid looks like a third generation alumni whose dad owns a couple yachts. That haircut and that sneering expression tell me all that I need to know.

It is literally in the job description. If you're a college Republican and the GOP National Committee finds a person WORSE than you, you get a call saying you better get your act together buddy.

I joined a literary and debating club when I was in grad school because it seemed an honor, even though one of my friends described it as "Young Republicans for God." This was in 1984. The seeds were there. Trump just cultivated them.

when I was in Uni, the local "conservative party" club was a bunch of commerce degree/business degree dorks in ill-fitting suits at a folding table in the hallway, & no one wanted to talk to them.

Kids in college this fall we're between 7 and 12 when Trumpism took hold of the world and then 12-17 as COVID further broke our collective brains.. All while social media took over our lives in the worst popular way. Not a great recipe..

The college Republicans at UMass in the Late 80s were just as virulently shitty as today. They played all the hits — affirmative action bake sale, Buckley-style big thought bigotry, tee-hee 4chan-style racist malignancy. They took their lead from the ones at Dartmouth — Dinesh and some other cocks.

the appeal of "you can be the absolute worst version of yourself and play the victim anytime anyone says anything about it" was simply too strong for young men who have never read a book

they have always been bad but they have genuinely gotten worse, you used to find generic preppy asshole types and now it’s pretty much all nazis

Kevin van Haaren@kevin.crime.group

and they were bad in the 80's too, just all downhill since.

I think that it was visible with Charlie Kirk. His media training was so aimed at being liked by pundit and political operatives that it was basically impossible to find footage that makes him look good to normal people.

hard agree with this. when i was in school the college republicans sucked, but their big things were like bog-standard pro-flat-tax, anti-affirmative action, anti-abortion, iraq-deadenderism... now they seem to legitimately be proud little fascists who think they have savvy, grown-up ideas...

I told someone that Make America Great Again was also a Reagan slogan and got to watch their brain do a factory reset

right, it was already trending poorly and then the trump era locked in aggressive shameless awfulness as the model for elected republicans, so if you're choosing to go into republican politics these days trump and his worst acolytes are your model

I think the Fed Soc arc is probably pretty similar. It was always bad, but there were always plenty of people who still basically saw it just as a networking club. If you're joining either now, it's because you *like* that it's full of scum.

It’s so bad we keep getting those articles about R legislators hating their staff for being useless little bigots who are so bigoted it actively prevents them from getting literally anything done. And I gotta say, love that for them. Reap what you sow hours.

These are all guys who spent their formative teenage years bathing in post gamergate right wing manosphere mania and watching the rise of Trump and the fall of all pretense of civility in politics. These guys are just pure evil. Basically got Hitler youthed on social media.

It’s a blind spot that the electorate doesn’t recognize how these goons become staff and end up in the house eventually. It doesn’t get instantly better after Trump unless there is sustained rejection of this type.

In 2012 I thought Republicans were bad people, I did not think the party needed to be utterly destroyed and the earth salted beneath it in order for liberal democracy to survive

Yeah, the 90s college republicans on my campus were misogynistic frat boy assholes with a Rush Limbaugh fixation but frankly they in no way compared to the modern day white nationalists. They've definitely gotten grosser (but I want to stress they were pretty gross!)

This has been true for decades, but somehow they manage to get worse every year. Like in 2006 they were also the worst person I’d ever met at the time, but the worst person I’ve ever met in 2026 is just way worse than that.
