I haven’t posted anything controversial in a while, I think, so here goes: C is for crouch. It’s not Control. It should be C. You can easily hit C with your thumb, as well as jump, so you can crouch jump. Ctrl is way too far down for a pinky to hit in the heat of battle.

That said, I play almost everything with a gamepad, including shooters. I only switch to keyboard very seldomly for a multiplayer shooter. The ergonomics just work out way better and I'm too old to care much about competitive edge, I'm not winning on reflexes anyhow 😂

How do you crouch and not jump without moving the base of your thumb up off the desk? Or do you have like a wrist rest that's like 3x thicker than your keyboard???

Sometimes, you want to jump and crouch at the same time, but not pressing at the same time. Usually, you can't crouch and sprint (exclusive movement modes). Pinky hold for different movement modes (shift and ctrl), thumb for movement-impulses. (Space for Jump,dash/roll on something like V)

*links an article called "sensible defaults do not exist"* No, but genuinely, Control is easier to reach for me than C. Wonder what I do differently or if it's a hand size thing

I dread this is some weird reveal of me using keyboards wrong but how do you press C,V,B etc with your thumb without hitting space? Am I holding my thumb wrong... Is it not meant to be sideways?

Sideways? Like along the keyboard? No, my thumb is angled from bottom to op, so I can indeed hit all those keys individually with my thumb

Ah I think it may be like a wrist position thing, I normally rest my wrist flat against the desk a little away from the edge of my keyboard, if I lift my wrist slightly or bring it forward then your way makes more sense to me 🙂

I agree, though not for the pinky not being able to reach there (as a big hand individual I don’t mind that), but rather because the pinky is probably already occupied with shift for sprint or maybe a dash. Crouch on C makes things more flexible.

C is for customizable controlls. That way nobody has to judge your choice of key bindings even when they are objectively wrong and ontologically evil.

ZQSD are the proper move keys. Now, as you read this, horrified at the image you have of your phalanges twisting to unnatural shapes for those keys, do mind I use an AZERTY keyboard. And as you find relief, know that your previous horror is what I endure every. single. game. until I remap the keys.

That left ctrl *hold to crouch* was a standard for a while will always make me mad for this exact reason. Crouch should be toggle by default and as a developer I should be allowed to set default binding to C for any game I work on

well look at Shortfingers McStubby-Digits over here, eh? Alright for some but I’d need an all-day return ticket to hit C with this thumb, but the pinky is already right there

I'm left handed so I *always* have to completely remap all the controls when I play a game. I personally put it all on the numpad (WASD becomes 8426), and crouch is 0/Ins, under the thumb

Yep exactly The cool thing with the numpad is that the differently-sized keys (Return, Plus, Minus, etc.) positioned all around your "home keys" allows for better muscle memory imho

This setup having more differently-sized keys sounds great. Like the gamecube controller, where you could tell by touch what button you were on, and it was much easier to quickly switch between them

This *is* a hot take! My counter is that my pinky finger is already hovering above ctrl, whereas to press C I would need to move my index finger, or more awkwardly for me, my thumb, from their normal positions and thus also away from other bound functions.
