The push for Harry Potter the TV show is going to be completely enormous—they're debuting it on fucking Christmas—and it is the responsibility of TV critics to contextualize this as rewarding the world's most transphobic billionaire (which is saying something) in everything we write about it.

joanns blatant toxicity (combined with other bullshit from the actors) was enough to kill the fantastic beasts franchise I understand hp feels like a juggernaut but there's a good chance this revival does not survive the ten years it's going to take to make it

I just don't see it succeeding in the way WB/HBO needs it to. This is streaming and post-pandemic cable TV with an audience that will feel the stench of desperation if the stars promoting it have to constantly avoid touching the subject of the writer

When the movies were coming out, HP was riding the wave of massive popularity of the books. I don't hang around children much these days, but I'm not picking up that the books are such a big a deal these days. It seems kind of over, culturally speaking.

I mean, I dunno, the video game that came out a few years back did MASSIVE numbers The 18 and 19 year olds that work for my wife were literally calling off work to play it. I don't like Rowling, but this is gonna do some numbers.

It's still a big deal amongst elementary school kids - but, unlike their parents generation - they leave it behind and move on to other books and interests.

Agreed. Even for a popular IP, seven seasons of a super expensive fantasy series is an extremely tall order. Most audiences may not care about her politics, but I’ll still be surprised if the show lasts seven seasons.

Don't worry little children. You just have to spend the next ten years being as adorable as the beloved stars of a movie series, but on a TV series schedule. The greatest British actors of their generation will not mentor you. Your every move will be examined by the most toxic entitled fans.

Eh, I’d be surprised if she was willing to spend her own money to keep it going. More likely she’s going to try and use her clout and control over the IP to push WB into keeping it going.

It's supporting a scapegoating fascist, which makes rewarders into her accomplices. bsky.app/profile/sean...

But this will be fairly review proof. I get why you’re mad but divorced dads and grandmas won’t read the review they’ll just put it on because they know the name and think it’s age appropriate for whatever kid they’re watching for the day

Yeah, Christmas sounds about right, that's pretty much been the standard HP airtime for the past twenty years... Even if the first season does somewhat well, I'm still super skeptical about it making a full 7-season run. They wanna be extra faithful to the books? Watch the budgets swell around S4.

Musk maybe competitive with Rowling for "world's most transphobic billionaire" in that he's being publicly awful to his own daughter about it, but he's certainly less monomaniacally focused on the issue (because of all his numerous other extremely evil priorities)

I want critics to emphasize that she's partially doing this to cut the original actors out of royalties for not worshipping the ground she walks on. Unfortunately most normies don't give an F about her bigotry. They might care about her screwing over emma, rupert and daniel though.

It’s also important to remember that it’s kinda garbage as a world too. Oh, magic is just memorization- also, somehow- within that context, there are powerful and weak wizards? No interaction with the rest of the world, a chosen one who just- lived when a spell was cast on him, now protagonist?

Oh, the most powerful evil wizard didn’t understand the magic of love? What? Slow non-migratory birds as communication, while apparation(sp) allows for instant transmission of people and letters? As a trans woman who grew up reading the books, it’s shit fiction. Star wars rip-off written worse.

I enjoyed the books and loved the movies. But nostalgia is gone because once I learned of her trans bigotry it jumped out everywhere in these stories about children. In any case she borrowed all the best ideas in HP from other writers and folk mythology. I’d prefer to see Narnia finished.

Pretty much. A lot of effort is being put into making this new Harry Potter show a success... but it is beyond a TV show now. The Harry Potter franchise itself is so tainted by JK Rowling being such a major figure in the transphobia movement.

As someone who won't even watch Roku or Tubi channels b/c of their ownership, I agree with you and hope people DO do this, but, for the most part, journalists -- and critics ARE journalists -- don't generally include such caveats about enjoying or not enjoying works of (even corporate) art.

It's mostly going to be covered like a normal television show and that will be really depressing but if you have the power to remind people their little treat comes dripping with blood you must do so.

I just want to say that I realize I have it easy, to the extent being full-time freelance for 13 years makes anything "easy." I have the luxury of choosing what I cover and can mostly run my mouth at will. I understand many TV writers' and editors' employers aren't going to give them that choice.

I have a feeling that if my family gets together for a holiday thing around xmas, somebody is going to try and throw it on and I'll have the choice of loudly making a stink about it or making a show of leaving the room.

Is there anything more indicative of the utter soul-sucking emptiness, bereft of a creative mote, a whisper of anything new, the money-grubbing executives regurgitating all the tired Harry Potter tropes, 8 movie's worth, ugh.

"This tripe that greedy, hate-filled, billionaire douchebags are forcing on society is so terrible, not only should you refuse to waste one second of your life on it? You should spit on any of the actors in it that you happen to encounter in your normal daily activities."

I think it is going to mostly flop, nostalgic fans will just rewatch the movies, new potential fans might be put off by JKR's transphobia and many articles about it are at least partially negative. I think there will be many viewers, but it will not be a full-on hit.

Harry Potter fans of my generation are salivating for this. It’s very strange to me because beyond the petulant transphobia of its creator, as an adult the books are thematically very hollow as source material.

That's the thing!!! Like yeah, I read them as a kid and enjoyed them, but they're not GOOD. It's not a story I can read now without punching holes through it like wet paper. My positive feelings for the books is nostalgia, revisiting doesn't enhance them in any way. WHAT are people obsessed with.

I mean, that's fine, but if it were just people rereading the books and engaging in fandom we wouldn't be here talking about it. The books are not good enough or important enough for people to keep pouring all their money and time into - money and time that is directly benefitting Rowling.

Eh, they're not terrible, but they are extremely thin. She's neither a gifted writer nor a great imagination, just adequate on both counts. They do have a compulsive readability at first, but it pales pretty quickly.

To an extent. But having nostalgia doesn’t mean that you can’t have standards. Like, I love the X-Men. If there’s a new X-Men TV series I’ll give it a shot, and I’ll be more willing to put up with weak parts, but I will bail if the show outright sucks.
