Leaded gasoline didn't sound like a good idea to the general public when it was invented. Its inventor had to do dumb stunts in front of crowds to get people to accept it. Turns out, he was wrong. He was also wrong about CFCs. Though at the time, they did generally seem better than ammonia.

yeah I've heard that Fecal Transplants can change a person's life. gut microbiomes really affect a LOT about us. the only thing is trying to get it to work without issue. placing part of a healthy person's microbiome into an unhealthy person's might not work for that person or worsen their problems

They kill your gut biome and start you fresh with someone’s healthy one. It’s all done with dehydrated fecal matter in dissolving capsules, so not as disgusting as it sounds. Has saved lives with diff c. and other gut issues. Also shown in some cases to affect obesity. Who knew.

There is little evidence that killing your gut microbiome beforehand offers any benefits- the residual antibiotics could in fact prevent engraftment of the new bugs and cause leakiy gut issues as many bugs are actually protective.

It's actually been shown to be a very effective treatment for certain digestive problems. Idea is that you replace/augment a patient's gut bacteria with a donors healthy bacteria. There's some evidence that it may help with depression, but it's probably been overhyped by some 'wellness' influencers.

Mostly covered by other people; the wait after coming in from outside to be able to see was a pain, plus mine always had a yellowish tint that made it seem like I always had shooter glasses on, like Walter in The Big Lebowski.

My ex-husband had a pair on at our wedding and was constantly shouted at to "take off the sunglasses" - they looked terrible in all the photos because of the almost permanent dark tint - an actual permanent tint is a better idea if you have an issue with bright lights and they can be v. subtle

okay to explain so you dont have to google, its basically Exactly What It Sounds Like. the reason it can actually be helpful is mostly bc of gut bacteria, youre introducing bacteria from some bacteria from someone whos got a good gut biome going to someone whos got a shitty one

but from a metric of "*sounds* like a good idea", the literal name "*leaded* gasoline" just sounds terrible. Like lead paint. I know there are reasons for it, but with a mental model of "lead == heavy and toxic", it just sounds wrong.

Are you kidding me? I wish they still sold actual lead paint! It's such a perfect tone of white that appears in historic paintings that you just can't truly reproduce from zinc or titanium.

I have hemochromatosis which means I accumulate too much iron in my blood so I give blood every month right now. When my ferritin count was really high, I gave every other week. In the last six years, I've donated almost four gallons of blood!

sadly the dude i follow cant actually donate blood due to reasons (idk medications or something) so his bloods just gotta go in the trash (sad) but yeah its sick how for at least some people the solution to having Too Much Blood is 'hey why dont you let us have some. win-win."

That sucks - my state won't actually take my blood because of the elevated iron levels. So I have to drive to neighboring state that will take it and use it.

As someone who loved in an apartment with a combo washer dryer for a year, I can safely say that they sound like a good idea but are actually terrible. A load of clothes took 4 hours and would still be wet. We bought drying racks and just hung clothes to dry.

It solved a problem at the time as it made engines run more smoothly (even if it quickly became apparent that it was toxic). The wild thing is that the inventor also went on to create CFCs (of ozone hole fame), and a pulley system that killed him after he got tangled in it.

Combo washer-dryer needs to go the other side of the line, it sounds good but is, in fact, very bad. Unless you like having thousands of creases steamed into your clothes making them impossible to subsequently iron out.

Cutting pizza into squares is a good idea when you pizza is already a square. See Detroit Style. I feel like cutting it into wedges like a round pizza would be incredibly cursed.

Cutting a lot of other pizzas into squares is also problematic- Chicago, new york, Neapolitan… anything with a crust would be terrible. But Midwest thin crust tavern style… the only real curse of square cut is that you can somehow eat an entire pizza when it’s just a bunch of little pieces.

I'm from St. Louis, and actually enjoy our style of thin crust, square cut, Provel "cheese" pizza. It's usually the Provel people complain about though, not the squares....

Considering how laser eye surgeons tend to wear glasses and how name complications can occur, I'm gonna guess laser eye surgery isn't actually a good idea.

I'm also keeping my glasses. As soon as I learned it can dull the way we see colors, I knew I'd probably never get it. But seeing first hand accounts online of the things people are struggling with from it solidified in my mind that it wasn't for me.

Diverging diamond interchanges are pretty awful for pedestrians, though, no matter what car-brained traffic engineers will tell you. The focus on vehicle flow introduces two new kill points for anyone trying to cross, further discouraging non-auto traffic.

Sliced bread is actually the worst idea. Pre-slicing bread exposes far more surface area, causing the bread to go bad faster. This "innovation" is one of the reasons American bread is so bad. Manufacturers have to pump the bread full of bleaches and preservatives to compensate!

The bleach is there because people like their bread white, and the preservatives would be there anyways because longer shelf life is good for the bottom line.
