The Trump administration has worked to portray itself as protecting women and girls through their anti-trans policies. Meanwhile, they've worked tirelessly to undermine protections against sexual assault. Wither Title IX, in this exceptional new reported story by @billiejsweeney.bsky.social.

assignedmedia.orgFalse Protection: Trump Fails Women in Title IX Assault Cases - Assigned MediaRules put survivors on trial. Education department abandons investigations. Bogus anti-trans cases are pursued instead.

if nothing else this is surely the impact of a multigenerational decline in smoking rates. Fewer smokers -> fewer smoking caused lung cancers -> the proportion of non-smoker lung cancer goes up even if the population rate is the same

The Washington Post@washingtonpost.com

While cigarette smoking is still the primary risk factor for lung cancer, a growing proportion of patients with the disease are nonsmokers. Never-smoker lung cancer is now the eighth leading cause of cancer-related death in the U.S.

I have not yet read the majority opinion in full, but an unstated principle here is, IMO: if a person can be indefinitely detained on the allegation that they are in the country unlawfully, then a CITIZEN can be indefinitely on the erroneous allegation that they’re an alien

It might be true that “Democrats shouldn’t talk about border security.” I don’t think that’s true, but let’s grant it’s true for the sake of the argument. It does not follow from that that ”Democrats shouldn’t talk about ICE shooting people or sending them to foreign gulags“ (paraphrasing)

as a dual national that votes in two places I think there's something to this. UK elections are considered big and complicated when you have to vote for 3 things in one ballot. My recent California ballot had a couple dozen roles and another 10 propositions. This is too much.

ryan cooper@ryanlcooper.com

I kinda suspect American voters are likely dumber than average in democracies because our system is so complicated and nonsensical

this is not in any way The Point, but I really love the lack of an oxford comma directly after Oxford occurs on the list. Somehow feels like a personal attack via grammar

This dumb hack has no power to do that. States don't have to listen to anything he says.

With the illusion of UNLIMITED productivity, that forcing function is gone. Now you can just ask Claude to slop up the idea you thought of on the toilet, and feel like you've done something. It's basically the equivalent of thinking that poasting is praxis: a quick dopamine hit mistaken for impact.

A big, albeit of a number, issue with Labour as a whole, but especially Mahmood, is they don't listen to anything which goes against their own rhetoric. Mahmood in particular seems determined to ignore the people whose lives her anti-immigration policies will destroy. inews.co.uk/news/politic...

“Departures from these practices should never be countenanced because they risk allowing prosecutors to impact national elections.” -Todd Blanche on DOJ’s 60-day rule, September 2024

Aaron Rupar@atrupar.com

Q: The typical practice is DOJ doesn't usually release charges this close to an election. Even though Ms Lucas isn't on the ballot, her daughter is. Can you speak to the timing? BLANCHE: The 60 day or 90 day practice is not in writing. That's not part of the justice manual. There's nothing improper

What's happening in France is hard to justify but easy to understand. In 1981 the UK had riots because 1 in 10 were unemployed and couldn't afford to eat. In 2026, 1 in 5 are IN WORK and can't afford to eat. What happens when AI doubles that number? What levels of policing will control it?

New, from me: One way that American elections have gotten better - maybe the only way - is the opportunity to claim some awesome "I voted" stickers. Here are my favorites from this voting season. (And please share yours). 🧵 donmoynihan.substack.com/p/the-best-i...

donmoynihan.substack.comThe Best “I Voted Stickers” of 2026Back in 2024 I wrote about the emergence of a sliver of electoral joy: the defiantly weird “I voted sticker.” Well, its time for the 2026 edition!

the true moral of this nasa story is this: if you present anything as a choice to management, be it testing or other safety critical work, they will see it as optional, and will default to saying no doing anything more than the minimum best practice means taking more responsibilities for delays
