You can do the same thing, buying a house and borrowing against it—ha ha, just kidding, normal people get taxed annually on their wealth via property taxes, the "you can't tax wealth, the economy will collapse!" rule applies solely to the super-rich.
For the fabulously wealthy, paying taxes is pretty much optional. They can borrow against their vast wealth, which is mostly an untaxed capital gain, without paying taxes. When they die, the capital gain goes to zero. And loopholes exist to bypass the estate tax too.

Prediction is hard. Especially about the future. That Yogi Berra gem proves that you don't have to be a sf writer to get irritated with people insisting that you must know what's going to happen tomorrow, but (as a sf writer), I can tell you that this is one of our main occupational hazards.

What’s that you say? Liz has a new book out which even the Telegraph is saying is even more unhinged than the last one? Wonderful, I’ll post this then.
It is, today, not the 13th anniversary of the publication of Steven Morrissey’s autobiography (it had been out for ten days) but something much better: the 13th anniversary of the Sunday Times publishing A. A. Gill’s merciless mauling of it—a review which went on to win Hatchet Job of the Year
Like many of us, I grew up with the original Star Trek, but hadn't seen it in decades. More recently, I've been watching the series again with my elderly parents, like we used to in the 1970s, and it has brought us such joy.
Thank you Walter Koenig for being part of that.

I seriously think that if you view paying tax at 47% on marginal income as anything other than an extremely modest contribution to pay in exchange for getting to live in a decent society, then you are morally subhuman and the world would be better off without you www.mediaweek.com.au/ruby-tuesday...

Even among people who use AI, nobody wants somebody else's slop. They like using AI to get out of doing work for other people. Use it for them instead of doing work, and they're not so happy.
China’s first AI-generated theatrical feature has flopped, earning just $181,000 in its first weekend.
By contrast, the scrappy ‘Niu Lai’ turned its crude animation into a viral attraction, grossing nearly $10 million a couple of months ago.

Ali Fortescue to Ellie Chowns on the group Greens4Palestine: "This group obviously has a big influence over your partys direction... do you think they should be kicked out of the party?"
Can you imagine a journalist asking, should Labour Friends of Israel be kicked out of Labour? Of course you cant
I don’t think enough is said about how funny this is. He would have briefed somebody to do this. Possibly while stood behind them, making suggestions over their shoulder. Stood on a stepladder.
So... That Turning Point/UVF documentary with all the people admitting to actual crimes is going nowhere except the memory hole then, huh?
Damn, you'd think that'd be at least one or two real journalists in the country capable of feeling shame about what that says about the industry.
The AirBnB people whining about the incredibly postmature rules changes are hilarious. Hey, here's an idea, if you don't want to pay someone to clean up after guests don't run a fucking lodging business!
It's really damning. The accusations are numerous and well-supported. But I was really struck by the descriptions of Trump's behavior -- the name dropping, strong-arming, and attempts to buy off silence. His gross rivalry with Epstein. It's all so familiar. It's shit he's been doing his entire life.
Beyond disgusted by even more rape allegations against the President of the United States.

I know there's a lot going on but I feel it should probably be more of an above-the-fold story that members of Congress released a thoroughly documented report directly accusing the president of the United States of being a serial rapist.

Catherine Blaicklock, founder of the Brexit Party, is among those on X who think this policy is too open/liberal.
An interesting thing about the trailer for EBENEZER is that "Johnny Depp gets sucked into a bed by a ghost" is literally his first film role and it looks so much worse here than it did 40 years ago.

My heart is heavy. Walter Koenig, our Ensign Pavel Chekov, passed away early today.
Walter and I met on the bridge of the Enterprise in the 1960s, and we stayed friends for nearly six decades. When Brad and I married in 2008, Walter stood beside us as our best man.
