Cannot shout out enough how amazing it was seeing Amanda Seyfried with wrinkles and chapped lips and looking like a--beautiful--normal goddamn human when half of Hollywood can't even move their eyebrows enough to get a furrow going

Obviously the pain of being cut off is real! But I guess I don’t understand why the social crisis is their pain—the phenomenon’s upshot—when the real crisis is clearly the phenomenon’s cause: parent-led parent-child relationships that the child finds intolerable.

After a brief period of “cut off” (us not tolerating them not treating us like autonomous adults well into our 30s), my parents are actually much better people for choosing to accept the boundaries my brother and I requested of them & our family is stronger than ever. It’s not that hard!

What's extremely telling is that there is never once an article like this written from the perspective of the person who cut off their parent.

Whether or not ppl cutting off their parents is an actual phenomenon (is it, really?) or just clicky outrage bait, anti-estrangement is a paternalistic, socially regressive position — it’s so similar to being anti-divorce that the two are virtually indistinguishable.

This ignores racism *and* Christian Nationalism *and* the anti-abortion movement collapsing with every woman its policies kill. Where is the New York Times finding these clowns!?!

Pretty remarkable for a survey of the state of the modern GOP to omit any mention of racism or authoritarianism. www.nytimes.com/2026/10/19/o...

At bottom, the problem with the GOP is that it is beholden to its wealthiest donors after Citizens United, and what they want is not what the majority, or even a plurality, of the American people want. That dynamic pre-dated Trump. He just exploited it.

Did you know that in the first full fiscal year of the second Trump administration, the U.S. accepted five (5) legitimate refugees who are not white South Africans, down from 100,060 in the last full fiscal year of the Biden administration? No, you wouldn't know if you only read this article

Lol this article is one big hallucination. The anti-war GOP consists of a VP who publicly supports wars of aggression and a Senator who wants Russia to invade Sweden and Finland. Small-gov't GOP is the feds stepping in to block states from regulating foods/medicines and deciding who plays HS sports.

This is -- again -- the *exact same game* we played with abortion, wherein we all had to vote for candidates who were just a teeeeeeensy bit anti-abortion because Republicans would overturn Roe v. Wade. They overturned Roe v. Wade AND gutted state-level abortion access. That's how that plan works.

Bugs 🔜 MC Atlanta@bugsmaytrix.bsky.social

look if shit is so dire for the democrats that they NEED every vote from trans people, maybe they shouldn't run candidates who are transphobic or fold on even the slightest pushback to trans rights it's not our fault y'all's guys suck

There are a lot of problems with our media environment these days, but ostensible news outlets prioritizing the voices of the stupidest motherfuckers on the planet is a big one.

Politico@politico.com

“I’m old. I’ve paid my home off,” said Ray Warner, a 72-year-old Akron resident. “Why would I pay property tax?” Across the country, homeowners are asking the same question and revolting against property taxes at a scale not seen in a half century.

ultimately it's shit like this that makes the decline of birth rates and resulting demographic skewing towards old people self-reinforcing. Greedy, wealthy retired people voting to destroy the funding for public services they relied on throughout their life now that they no longer need them

Meta took down the No Kings instagram; TikTok banned the Musk documentary account for supposedly violating its political posting policies. A reminder that platforms are owned by the wealthiest of people, control the means of media distribution, & put their thumbs on the democracy scale as they wish

Honestly I feel like the expansion of Karen from "person who calls the cops on people behaving inoccuously" to "person who is rude to customer service, regardless of circumstances" has in practice largely served to cut off the only way customers can fight back against corporate greed/malfeasance

Nate@ngs.bsky.social

I'm done with being nice about it. I used to take the 'don't shoot the messenger' approach with customer service folks. But if you're straight up lying or being utterly unhelpful, all bets are off. Mostly I'm just tired of being lied to in all walks of life. It needs to stop.

since California ballots are now out: prop 40 is the billionaire tax, and you should vote yes to stick it to them but both props 41 and 42 are designed to retroactively cancel the billionaire tax because they’re afraid they can’t beat it at the ballot box yes on 40, no on 41 and 42

I read Rubio’s speech where he does a Prager U recap of Ancient Greek history, and the funniest part is where he praises Achilles for seeking glory in Troy even though it means his death. Yeah, Marco, the Iliad is great. What’s Achilles up to in the sequel?

"But Achilles wanted glory!" No, he didn't. He very explicitly says, "fuck this, I hate Agamemnon, and I'm going home," until Patroclus dies. The entire point of the poem is his rage and grief. Can anyone read a fucking book, holy shit.

I'm looking at this speech now, and that is absolutely not the fucking hero of Greek myth. The hero of Greek myth is almost always a dramatically tragic figure who is undone by their own character flaws. In fact, that's basically every single Greek hero. What the fuck are you talking about man.

AHHHHHHH THE ONLY REASON HE EVEN STAYS TO DIE AT TROY IN THE ILIAD IS TO AVENGE PATROCLUS. IT'S A POEM ABOUT HIS RAGE. THE OPENING LINES ARE PRETTY CLEAR WHY CAN'T A SINGLE DEFENDER OF WESTERN CIVILIZATION READ A SINGLE THING FROM THE WESTERN CANON AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

this is the ultimate end point of capitalism, ai will completely atomize everyone and there will be zero shared experiences. there will be no culture, only pure consumption. this must be resisted
