Incredible thread

Bruno Dies@brunodias.dev

Genuinely I don't know that it comes across to people who haven't been here to watch how almost unbelievable this was, just people taking something that looked impossible and dragging it kicking and screaming all the way to inevitability.

While the Phila Big 5 has been functionally dead for years, and the NIL era really has rendered 4/5 of the schools nationally (and seemingly permanently) irrelevant, I can nonetheless be sad and angry that Villanova has pulled the plug today. Redditors said it best: www.reddit.com/r/philadelph...

Feel like Tourneur had this shot from the climax of the movie in his head for years and built the story around getting to it.

The Noir Collective@thenoircollective.bsky.social

THIS WED at 8 PM ET/5 PM PT, host @willmckinley.bsky.social casts new light on Jacques Tourneur’s stunning study in urban paranoia, the 1956 #filmnoir classic NIGHTFALL. We’ll be leaving it to Will to make all further announcements. 😊 #TheNoirCollective Link to watch: archive.org/details/nigh...

In the spirit of the phrase "resident alien for tax purposes" and me thinking Resident Alien sounds like a movie, add "for tax purposes" to the end of a movie title: That Thing You Do For Tax Purposes!

This is my central criticism of this generation of planners; they assume single detached housing is a benign/sacred baseline and everything and everyone else who wants to share that space must be prepared to make an offering for the privilege.

LB complaining about multiplexes - “There’s no affordability” “there should be affordability requirements” %^*! That This is so gross. You’re fine with a single family house being $6m, creating wholly privatized wealth, but a 4 plex should have “affordability covenants” It’s so infuriating!

Vancouver, WA did the biggest upzone / deregulation possibly in the entire nation and not enough people are talking about it. And this all came from City staff - they didn’t have community advocates demanding this for years!

Single stack (much cheaper plumbing) is as old as germ theory but still illegal almost everywhere in the U.S.

John Lansing@pipedreaming.bsky.social

The goal was to determine if requiring a vent for each trap was really necessary to prevent siphonage. Karsten reiterated that the new germ theory proved that trap vent piping was not needed for cleaning the air in the drains and that the system could be eliminated if siphonage was prevented.

Philly could have been doing this instead of sticking with owner-occupied rowhouses ad nauseum. Maybe when we have a new Mayor with a better policy team

Bike/pedestrian networks don't take 30 years to build. Stop accepting those timelines in your community. The best practices have been proven & they already exist. Safety should already be the #1 priority. The ROI is unbeatable. The timeline is a moral document and it shouldn't be generational.

The press coverage of the Academy of Natural Sciences has gone from "Oh how sad" to sounding like a hostage negotiation. Which maybe sounds bad, but elected leaders, the press, the people online, all saying "You don't have to do this, man" is better than mourning. share.inquirer.com/YTQg0s

@migueldelaney.bsky.social I just listened to the Libero Episode on the Man City charges and you mentioned at the end that the period of Pep’s success comes after but still rests on the period covered by the investigation. I wonder if there is actually a more explicit connection between the two.

If you accept the presence that no one besides Pep has had a club backroom structure built for them in advance in quite the same way, and if the investigation indicts that structure so comprehensively, then his legacy at Man City is probably more deeply compromised than I think I realized.

I wonder if that is fair - Pep wasn’t the one that decided to fight the charges for so long, for example. But you can’t have a club built in your image and then only take responsibility for sporting results.

Wasn’t the period covered by the charges when Man City decided to go all-in on creating an environment built in Pep’s image? Ferran Soriano and Txiki Begiristain were both hired in 2012, and that laid the groundwork for recruiting Pep a few years later.

Cities should be paying people to bike. Cities should be buying people e-bikes. Cities should be rewarding people for convincing neighbors to ride bikes. Every trip by bike is a net financial gain socially. And it compounds, the more people who do it.

Tough competition of course, but the Trump admin deciding that white South Africans are the only group of people on earth currently worthy of refugee status has to be the most overtly racist thing any administration has done in decades

this is a bit of an obsession of mine especially here in charlottesville. the cost of commercial real estate is prohibitive if you want to experiment and the city seems categorically opposed to small lots and small units that could allow people to start businesses without a huge capital investment
