Older, still hopeful, still queer, still working for a better world where we can all feel safe enough to be our authentic selves. Love strange books, disturbing films, music that makes me think. And of course anglo saxon vocabulary. Fuckers

First they erased a ‘Protect the Dolls’ t-shirt from Strictly Come Dancing. Now they’ve erased Pride badges from University Challenge. The BBC are saying that our visibility as LGBTQ people is a political issue. Meanwhile they’ve commissioned a 2-part series on JK Rowling. Impartial? My arse!

I'm not criticizing those who are showcasing the accomplishments of scientists, artists, and writers to debunk RFK Jr.'s comments but I think it's also important to treat them not as ignorance, but as the outright malice they are. He made those comments to claim a US citizen is unfit for the Senate.

Same with gay people. Behave as you wish, but the minute someone tells you you’re “not like other gay people” and “why can’t they be more like you - reasonable and quiet”, then you’ve fucked up and must disabuse them of this notion immediately.

If Putin stops fighting, the war ends. If Zelensky stops fighting then his country will be occupied, leaders murdered, language banned, businesses stolen, children kidnapped. That's what happens in Russian-occupied Ukraine.

Reminder that the EU had no compunction about banning Russia Today. If anything, Musk’s behaviour is more egregious - directly assisting a foreign enemy's military attack. And this is on top of his support for race riots, Nazis and CSAM! By any measure, a threat to national security.

Steve Peers@stevepeers.bsky.social

It's legitimate for the EU, the UK, Canada and others to support their Ukrainian ally. If Musk is going to (in effect) assist Putin's invasion of Ukraine, Ukraine's allies should sanction Starlink, X and Tesla. At the very least, governments (and people) should stop using his fucking site already.

Speaking of voting, if you're a member and you'd like to keep the National Trust's Council free from interference from Britain (and the US's) richest financiers, don't forget to vote before the end of the month. Quick-vote takes moments and avoids the Restore Trust slate of candidates.

Having grown up in Wales, I can testify that if you are actually worried about your culture and history being under threat, the thing to do is write poetry and songs, perform plays, tell stories and organise festivals, not just sit around whining.

Engineering (to me) is "design within constraints". Human safety, budget, time, hardware limitations are all constraints. Dudebros don't like being constrained, it's too much like consideration for others. They write code instead of engineering software.

Mallory Moore@sexabolition.blog

There's similar happening in recent years around security engineering. "Engineering" is thrown around like a badge of "I'm a tech tough guy don't look at my soft hands" by some silly people and on the other hand others take it seriously as a discipline of qualified construction and problem solving.

Let's stop using anodyne labels like "the immigration debate" or "controversy over migrants" and start referring to things accurately. "Expelling children who, by law, are entitled to remain in the country" or "imprisoning toddlers in concentration camps" or "pogrom"

Well, I for one am an economist who supports rent controls! Here’s why 🧵: Markets only work well if: -buyers & sellers have roughly equal power -producers respond to price signals & expand supply in response to scarcity -buyers can walk away if prices get too high

Any lives lost due to this closure should be laid firmly at the feet of the far-right agitators who caused this. The way in which anti-asylum activists are putting more and more people at risk should be a wake up call that it is time to genuinely combat them, rather than pandering to their ideology.

What's most scary about this isn't the violence or even Farage clearly enjoying the spectacle. It's the fact these people feel they can violently assault protestors without consequence. The same tactics the British Union of Fascists used at their meetings in the 1930s. When did this become normal?
