if it took you 5 seconds of contemplation to think of an alternative you should take at least another 5-10 to at least consider the possibility that it at least crossed the minds of 1 or 2 of the people who dedicate their lives and research careers to dealing with the problems we post about on here

i think conceding the idea that militancy per se is "fascist" is conceding the fascist worldview entirely, because the fascist worldview is that freedom and equality and friendship are luxuries which can only be paid for by "strong men doing strong man things"

one effect of the voters fuckin' hating data centers and data centers being at least for now profitable to build out is that state and local are in better position to extract more from data center builders, which seems good to me and i hope more do

What we see again and again from the modern American elite is the insistence on receiving the prerogatives and deference due to their positions without any of the accompanying obligations.

Secretary of Defense Rock@sodrock.bsky.social

The more I think about it, “is fair to expect a senior military leader to stand up to or refuse to accept an immoral, unethical or illegal order from the president or the secretary of defense” is an utterly embarrassing quote and such an indictment of the American officer corps

If you want to weep for Milo that's fine but consider that, unlike the rest of us, Milo is now living in the world he dreamed of, longed for, and worked so hard to create. This is what he wanted, and now he's getting it good and hard

Nothing wrong with y’all as a spoken word but when you see it on the internet you’re always about to read a patronizing faux-hillbilly screed.

Minor point but I really hate this performative “y’all” people do to try and appear more folksy. I don’t type in a Yorkshire accent and I did people would rightly tell me to shut up.

Or you're going to make my point by indulging in exactly the behavior my model of human development suggests is both maladaptive and yet emotionally satisfying in a situation where you have identified a supposed 'out-group' member within your territory?

I was flipping through channels on the radio and caught the last half or so of The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald, and then the DJ came in and said "We'll continue our Yacht Rock Weekend right after this!"

I dunno. It's fine that not every game is for me. I just don't get who they are designing for. Every release is "We had sensitivity trainers make sure the setting is suited for wholesome chungus found family adventures. The new subclasses are the Murderfuckerizer 9000 fighter and WMD wizard."

Yeah I loathe this kind of reply. Literally only exists so the sender can assert they're wiser than you. "Ah my poor naive fool, have you only just learned there is evil in the world?" Get fucked

Seeing more and more people drawing a red line and *blocking* the strangers who respond to posts expressing upset with “is that a surprise to you?” and I’m starting to see the case for it. Lowest, most pointless kind of reply.

You know the North Koreans have to feel insanely vindicated right now. You know KJU called up the new guy in Iran after the ayatollah got exploded and was like “Hey man, how‘s it going? Another beautiful day in Pyongyang. Clear skies, not a F-35 in sight. Oh? Sorry about your dad…”

this really is baffling, it's incredibly difficult to read Piers Anthony and think anything but "please check this man's hard drive" and yet, not a single whisper IRL that I know of props for putting it all on the page (?) I guess (??)

Will "scifantasy" Frank@scifantasy.bsky.social

What's astonishing--and I say this every time--is that though I 100% agree on the level of yikes, to my knowledge there has never been an accusation of inappropriate conduct by Anthony, such as to/with fans. Which you can't say for, you know, ALMOST EVERY OTHER MALE AUTHOR.

In my experience, scholars of a particular historical period are the LEAST uptight about "accuracy" in fictional representations of their period, which is why, as a medievalist, I can assure you that A Knight's Tale is the greatest movie set in medieval England that has ever been made.

See this hoity-toity asshole? Born on 3rd, related to a former president.... and so beloved by an overwhelming percentage of the population that they elected him four times in a row since they believed he actually cared about them because of his speeches and leftish policies.

In what universe is this acceptable behavior from a member of Congress? I’m really glad he got the treatment he needed but you can’t just fuck off for 4 months without explanation even if you have a regular job.

Jen Bendery@jbendery.bsky.social

Rep. Tom Kean (R-N.J.) is back, after being gone from Congress since March 5 (!). "This is not an easy speech to give," he says. He says he received a diagnosis of depression. Says doctors recommended he stay in the hospital, then he realized how "long depression had been affecting my life."

Occam’s Spoon reposted

As someone who has been struggling with this for months, if not years, without the ability to take any time off due to the crumbling economy and empty social safety net he helped create, I am torn between “glad you got the help you need” and “fuck off.”

Rep. Tom Kean finally speaks after months away from Congress for a previously unexplained absence: "I was given the diagnosis of depression ... the doctors recommended I remain in the hospital to address my illness"

You know, this is ugly, but I'm going to say it anyway; I think that much of the American AI boom slots directly into unmet social/organizational needs. No mentors, unstable institutions, no real training, no third places, absence of trustworthy authorities, inability to cope with uncertainty, ..

Talk about your dilemmas. Do I support the young, energetic, activist side of the party who are growing like flies? Or the other side who are, uh… none of those things?

Extremely flat cadence that has one gear with a set intensity, the refrains of short one-two contrastive punches, no fat on the sentences outside of hedges meant to keep the tempo going; once you've read a few bits of AI writing it stands out. Also Pangram puts it at 100% AI Written.
