As someone who has been struggling with this for months, if not years, without the ability to take any time off due to the crumbling economy and empty social safety net he helped create, I am torn between “glad you got the help you need” and “fuck off.”

Rep. Tom Kean finally speaks after months away from Congress for a previously unexplained absence: "I was given the diagnosis of depression ... the doctors recommended I remain in the hospital to address my illness"

Taking three month off (three months!) to deal with depression I such an unimaginable luxury I almost can’t comprehend it but that could be the brain fog (due to depression!) talking.

I'm leaning more towards fuck off. His office could have released notice that he was being treated much earlier. He wasn't too infirmed to engage in stock trading. That Tommy gets months off to deal with depression is socialism for the rich and connected. You get capitalism for your issues.

I have no knowledge of Kean's personal finances, but if this was all paid for by Congressional benefits... If the dude remains in the GOP, it will be proof positive that he derived little lasting benefit from his 4 months of treatment.

I as depressed when they let me out of the hospital after being shot and paralyzed, they gave me some valium and told me to "find a place to live". Good times.

Please, I know that I'm nobody to you, but as someone who spent ~6months hospitalized when almost no one spends that long hospitalized for depression, even when they have the money, but I think maybe you and I should talk to each other. I think it could help others to read. Please.

He STILL can FUCK all the way off! I deal with depression everyday! Most of it stems from my daughter who is a mom of 4 & suffers from manic depression & bipolar 1 AND she has psoriatic arthritis. I constantly have to help her through her episodes BUT I still work PT & I’m a grandma full time!

I am firmly in the camp of "let's see some fucking deeds, instead of words". It's rare to find a compassionate GOPer until a specific crisis shows up at their door and beings them a dose of reality..

And Tom Kean Jr's first order of businesses to look for sympathy. His second order of business is going to be to attend a fundraiser. And his final order of business is to go back to screwing over his constituents and the Constitution. I'm his constituent and Tom Kean can fuck off.

"I was given the diagnosis of depression." Sounds like he is still in a dissociative state where things are done to him without any agency. Being institutionalized for a month must be amazing when you don't have to worry about the expense of it all. My dad didn't have that option. He died of suicide

As a state senator, Kean twice voted against increasing minimum wage. His net worth is over $10 million. He has healthcare, taxpayers fund 75% of the cost. His bosses don’t care about his absence - it took months before anyone knew he was missing. As usual, millionaires make their own rules.

Are you kidding me right now?! The privilege is absolutely stunning, and it’s coming from a pedo protector hellbent on destroying healthcare for millions of vulnerable people in this country no less!

I’ve lost a job due to severe depression and PTSD even though I am a protected class as a disabled veteran and obtained FMLA. He’s been a part of the party systematically removing protections for people like us. I say he can fuck right off to the swamp he came from.

People who are affected with mild to moderate depression can generally function pretty much normally on simple medication with regular follow ups. Being hospitalized and out of communication for months indicates a level at which he is probably a danger in his position.

Well isn’t that “special”. He gets the best treatment our taxes can buy while we get a pill, see you in 3 months and a 500.00 out of pocket bill.

Thank you. Republicans like Kean, so privileged & tone deaf, telling Americans to seek "help" as if everyone has healthcare coverage, gets paid for time off, can hire childcare if needed & would have a job waiting for them on their return.

I am not torn. He can fuck right off. Also don't forget he is a millionaire and so is his father. Former Republican Governor of NJ Tom Kean Sr. He doesn't even need health insurance but I am sure he is using our tax paid health insurance. Did I say he can fuck right off!

How many thousands, (millions?), of us have been fired or had to quit due to debilitating mental/physical illness leaving g us in a financial bind in addition to our health crisis?

Thanks @anamariecox.com for speaking out and pointing what a luxury it is for someone to be able to take off so much time from work. I too have dealt with depression for decades. And have had to continue working with no time off so I could keep my health insurance. #HealthcareNotBallrooms

I've had to deal with depression for decades & never had the luxury of taking time off "to deal with it". Depression is misunderstood by the country at large, by (some) doctors, & by the insurance companies. If he truly had depression, I want to see him work FOR the ppl who suffer from it.

Same. My husband has suffered for years and has never been offered unlimited paid time off and a fully paid Cadillac health plan to address it. We have spent the last 10 years dealing with it piecemeal while our family, living situation and retirement plans have been shattered. Sending you peace. 💜

I'm #TeamFuckOff No problem with him taking care of his health. Good for him. Negative one billion points for nobody around him being responsible enough to say where a member of congress was for months. He should resign on that basis alone.

If you abdicate the office for more than one month, it should trigger an election to find your replacement. Here's your pay for the remainder of your term but you have other shit going on and we need representation. The line forms to the left.

We all should have the medical coverage he and Congress get at no cost - but won't give to people who pay their salary. Another example of socialism for the rich and their friends, and capitalism for the rest of us.

I'm not. Fuck him. I've struggled with depression since I was 15 and I've never gotten help from people. Most of the problems at my jobs were blamed on me having depression, even.

It must be nice to have such comprehensive health insurance paid for by the govt. If only Kean and his party hadn't cancelled the meager health insurance subsidies of millions of Americans, many of our fellow citizens could relax knowing they and their families were protected with insurance.

Same. I almost went broke with this disease and maybe others will learn that it is, indeed, a serious illness with bad effects. Other than that, give us universal health care to help us all get well.

I suffer as well. In 2003, enough to have to take off 3 months from work. Which required me to inform my company of this, provide documentation, and keep them posted on returning. This chooch skipped town and told no one. If he’s sick i hope he’s healing, but there should be consequences for AWOL.

I know! I struggled every single day but went to work because I had no choice. Well I guess I could have been homeless. But that was a worse thought than slogging through the day on antidepressants.

I have a shitty job that causes anxiety and depression but I am also a husband and a father who has people relying on my income and health insurance coverage. While my job does provide long term disability which I have to pay for, if I actually took time off, we would be homeless and uninsured

He takes off four months for depression and still gets paid $58,000. What about our veterans with depression/PTSD? Shouldn't our veterans also get paid $58,000 for fours months as they take off from work for treatment and be guaranteed their job when they return???

Yeah I’m at the fuck off place. We spend out of pocket for our kid to get the supports she needs because our rulers think 12 sessions should be enough to “fix” someone. This MFer just took months off on my dime. Paid by taxpayers- full benefits- full pay. Inexcusable that we live like this.

Same here, but with the added burden of struggling to balance depression with a recent Parkinsons diagnosis (not unrelated) and a 9-5 job with minimal PTO. Love to take 3-4 paid months off to deal with my health. And I am lucky I have decent health insurance. Meds alone....

Until he advocates legislation that we should all be afforded this healthcare I’m in the “fuck-off” camp! We should all be calling his office. At the very least I’ll get my friends in his district to.
