When "white sauce" in fish pie Contains cheese, it’s a lie. That’s a mornay.
I hate it when food presenters describe a white sauce with cheese in it as a béchamel. It's not. A béchamel is a simple white sauce. Add cheese and it's a mornay. But let's not using the French words and just call one a plain white sauce and the other a cheese sauce.

Digital Ocean ended their $50/month sponsorship of GNOME and FlatHub and went radio silent on CSS-Tricks right around the time they found a spare three million dollars to burn on “sponsoring” a high-profile racist’s dotfiles repo. Impossible to see this as anything but a statement of their values.
> The mechanism should pay people for being useful, not for being good at asking
I have been writing this post about the economics of open source, on and off, for 13 years. I wasn't expecting to end up at "Microsoft should send corporations a huge bill" but nothing else we've tried has worked. https://seldo.com/posts/nobody-pays-for-open-source-we-can-force-them-to/

"Omarchy should not matter. But sadly it does. As a power grab." I wrote about why we have to care about Omarchy. As a fascist power grab within the FLOSS ecosystem.

MANAGEMENT: We're going to eliminate skilled worker roles and replace them with lower paid jobs supervising the machine. Although productivity and quality will suffer, it'll be worth it to ensure you're that little bit more disposable. PROGRAMMER: Good thing i'm an expert on talking to the machine

LLM's are helpful because they're trained on years of high quality educational material and forums where people helped each other. People aren't visiting forums or paying for educational content anymore because of LLM's. The well isn't going to magically fill itself in perpetuity.

Been thinking about how much JavaScript we ship for basic UI patterns. Wrote it up. Anchor positioning, Popover API, Scroll-Driven Animations and more — what they replace and what's still missing 👉 blog.gitbutler.com/the-great-cs...

I wonder if the United States can learn anything from the last time a major industrialized country decided to isolate itself from the rest of the world? Almost a decade after the Brexit vote, GDP in the UK is around 6-8% lower relative to peer countries. (Source: www.nber.org/papers/w34459)

Write code to make being human easier. Rip code out if it makes being human harder. Write code to make caring for each other easier. Rip it out if it makes caring for each other harder. Empathy driven development has literally never failed me. It’s done me better than everything else combined

📣THREAD: It’s surprising to me that so many people were surprised to learn that Signal runs partly on AWS (something we can do because we use encryption to make sure no one but you–not AWS, not Signal, not anyone–can access your comms). It’s also concerning. 1/
PSA: we're aware that Signal is down for some people. This appears to be related to a major AWS outage. Stand by.

More than *anything* the people who actually know how technology works, who actually build things, wish that people would treat LLMs like every other technology, and be normal about them. Don't build a religion about them, don't force them on people, don't ignore the problems. Just be normal.
