The average person's understanding of consent and bodily autonomy

Social media loves talking about how everything is getting worse. But what’s something that you’ve seen get _better_ in your lifetime?

BREAKING: Anthropic reports an $80 billion net loss in the first half of 2026.

This reminded me of some informal anarchist writing in recent years about people who respond to hearing they harmed someone by listing the ways they are fragile, marginalized, or helpless (I'd guess it was @butchanarchy.bsky.social but can't quite place it)

To be clear I'm not minimizing the unique contributions of Ijeoma or the film, just remembering a connection that is compelling to me & makes this essay seem particularly relevant to my circles

As someone who needs a translator for whatever the tech people are talking about, this was quite helpful as an explanation

between the catastrophic PHP vuln and the intermediate cert vuln and AI models that can turn a proof of concept into a bot net in like 10mins we’re in for a wild 24 hours

I have made the big decision to purchase a modern boombox which can play my CDs plus tapes, USB thumb drives, and Bluetooth connections (both directions I think?) so I'm gonna be jamming out to a bunch of scratched mix cds again

The lack of cd/dvd burning drives in most computers has had such a negative impact on our ability to keep our own shit

I gotta say, I think being socially outgoing and trying things is going to be a lot harder this year with a visible & awkward medical thing happening to my face. Even at the surgeon's office they thought I was a child with my mother (my friend who is less than 5 years older).

I need to come up with pithy things to say when people think I'm a child or fish for information or try to rush me into "being excited" as if I'm not right in the middle of the big scary shit

This very much tracks and played a role in why I decided not to ever go for any faculty roles after school.

there is simply no acceptable reason to not be fighting fascism as hard as I would totally be fighting the fascism if I was there. I mean, I can't, of course, because I'm not there. so that's a good reason, actually. but nobody ELSE has one

Rape as a tool of political violence was the natural escalation point to allowing an adjudicated rapist to become President. I think I'll just start shrieking at the top of my lungs at anyone who tells me I'm overreacting from this point forward. No words, just the feral sound of unbridled rage.

If it's anything like the last greeting card my grandma sent me before she died of old age, it says something like "your aunt made me write this" but that's 6 words so who knows

Wrong answers only. My bet: thanks for all the fish.

Real life: I've encouraged my shy silent cat to use his voice and now he walks around screaming in a wobbly, pathetic voice at all hours

I cannot stress enough that the permitting reform bill will rescind the NHPA and 60 years of preservation practice. There will not be a CRM industry in January. Data centers will go unchecked. Transmission lines will run through the Sand Creek Massacre site. THPOs will be run by the federal gov.

Have you noticed, lately, or noticed people around you commenting, that there just seems to be no money anymore. There's no money for companies to make the tv shows you like, the video games you like, the local diner you like shut down, no one you know can find a job. Think about that in context of

AI is now the biggest investment in all of US history as a percentage of GDP. Datacenter construction is up, all other construction is down. "AI Is Squeezing Out the Rest of the Stock Market," reported WSJ 2 days ago. We basically bet the whole economy on the most optimistic visions panning out.

I'm not saying people should stick around to help people close to them who do horrendous things get back on a path to being less horrible, but unless you have been in the very unusual position to succeed at it like I have, I don't really want to hear your excuse for minimizing abuse distant from you

I am grateful to have been able to be in the position people want to believe is possible, but even if the person never assaults again - which I will never know for sure - it doesn't make for a feel good outcome for anyone involved. Stopping assault from happening is more emergent.

Importantly - and this is something that came up for me too - a lot of the factors involved have nothing to do with you. You can't be good/virtuous/helpful/tough enough to incentivize them to change, you have to let them show you how THEY handle it. Anyway. This discourse is making me frustrated.

You would have to be: - deeply invested in them already - not shut out when you call them out/get in the way of their bad behavior - prepared to hear terrible things they have done and thought - willing to persist in having awkward conversations about abuse with them frequently for YEARS etc

Killed. NSF’s SBE was killed, in violation of law. The President does not have the power to choose to kill programs at a whim by defunding them. The imperial presidency was a mistake and we are in a separation of powers constitutional crisis.

Most people aren't talking about the kind of transformations we really need, because I think a lot of folks have surrendered to the idea of living in a "rape-prone" society. The satisfaction of occasionally punishing some of the most egregious actors is all many are allowing themselves to hope for.

I cannot overemphasize that this is a fight we can win, but we need as many voices as possible here. The kids of Philly cannot afford to lose our flagship biodiversity museum. The Philly school district closed 17 schools this year. We need to turn this around for our kids and the culture of Philly.

To put it another way, you can’t just tell your sons they need to take accountability—you need to hold them accountable. Start with small stuff. Don’t shield them for the consequences of their actions. Walk them through the process of doing the wrong thing and turning it into the right thing.

It is no coincidence that rationalists and EAs tend to be straight white guys from well-off families, because for everybody else, the world usually conspires to knock some sense into you about your inherent god-emperor genius by the time you’re old enough to drink.

I want to make another point here, that I think Faine does an excellent job of highlighting: there isn't anything particularly wrong with putting on sex parties with consenting adults A big issue here is that women are being pressured to attend in order to network *professionally*

Faine Greenwood@faineg.com

Women trying to succeed in Silicon Valley AI and effective altruist spaces are reporting feeling serious social pressure to attend sex parties - where people have reported being sexually assaulted, like below. Events like Aella’s “Slutcon,” which is happening again this weekend.

Today I completed (I think) this year's cloud pruning of my Japanese andromeda (Pieris japonica), tomorrow I shall try to tackle my Satsuki azalea while channeling the grumpy old Japanese-British bonsai expert I like to watch
