Matty with another sizzler. Setting aside the obvious “we don’t want fascism to win anywhere” rebuttal, you know what’s in Brazil? A whopping 60% of the fucking Amazon rainforest. Jair Bolsonaro, Flavio’s dad, oversaw a surge in deforestation. Oh, and we already just missed 1.5 degrees.

Dan Mauler 🎃@meelar.bsky.social

I just think Matt's wrong about this. We're at a point in our technological development where a ton of problems spill over national borders--if Flavio Bolsonaro burns down the Amazon, that will flood houses in Miami.

In Brazil, it appears that voters who opted for eliminated first-round candidates roughly broke even in the runoff (even if the candidates leaned right). But the big difference was: Millions of voters who cast 'null' or 'blank' ballots in the first round then voted for Lula.

The US is not about to have a free and fair election. The state has put its thumb on the scale to favor the ruling party in multiple ways. It's a mostly free, somewhat unfair election. But still one where the ruling party can be overwhelmed by numbers. Hence the term "competitive authoritarianism."

Asawin Suebsaeng@swin24.bsky.social

It is atrocious we have to operate under this constant credible and explicit threat from one political party, the fact we keep calling it a “free and fair election” needs some light revising

This is a chilling satirical statement and also, I believe, a real risk of allowing the idea that nebulous, unproven biological advantages should result in bans on classes of people in sports to gain purchase.

I support banning biological Black toddlers from youth sports if it’s an issue of fairness and safety.

gotta say hats off to all the writers pretending to do profiles of Silicon Valley CEOs just so they can add that one same paragraph, every single time, that demonstrates they're all insane freaks who do not know or like their own kids.

People abroad don't understand the level of interference Meta & bots had in these elections. 5 days before the election a far-right politician posted a fake news video that got 157 MILLION views on Instagram in 24hs. For reference, GTA 6's reveal trailer got 90 million views on YouTube in 24hs.

Today is Intersex Awareness Day. I am intersex – and did not find out until I was 26! Intersex people are also impacted by the decision in FWS, but this is much less talked about. Intersex people continue to be subjected to non-consensual medical interventions. Intersex rights are human rights.

It struck me that one of the other reasons the fear-mongering “OUR AI WENT ROGUE” bullshit is sucjh nonsense is that you can’t say that and then also say “YOUR DATA IS TOTALLY SAFE WITH US AND WILL NEVER END UP IN THE WRONG PLACES”

people need to grasp how many people there are, how many of those folks are online and how siloed our internet consumption is.

FB memory of the time I brought the DVD of cold in July because I work in a supermarket and it still at the time stocked DVDs and I enjoyed the film at the cinema. Really think the whole cultural economy thing works better when the audience is consumers not subscribers. I paid more money for stuff.

We’re in a bad equilibrium. A priori, we should be against MPs doing casework because it is a means of building taxpayer-funded patronage - but while some MPs do it, all will. But also some institutions have become unresponsive to citizens who don’t escalate cases.

Replying in a quote because it’s an interesting thread. Basically, I firmly disagree. It’s ineffective altruism. Lawmakers are powerful and can do big things and should focus on that. Indeed if they did that, there would (or should) be fewer problems to mop up!

Interesting to note; any and all files within D&D Beyond's Sigil VTT will disappear at the end of this month (thanks to Virtual Battle Mats for the heads up!). Any and all files within will vanish. Thankfully nearly all of the content has been released for free. But still good to note.

We come back to the idea of Execs who really don't understand art or why people make art, in any way, finding ways to absolutely annihilate those that do, in a death of a thousand cuts and then one big 400-person cut. It's heartbreaking. The western games industry kills a NIntendo every year.
