I can get behind this as a vision for tech but it will only work if people can meaningfully opt out and lead analog, comfortable, humane lives if they want

Alistair Davidson@moh-kohn.eurosky.social

My pro-freedom vision is: - Mass democratisation of software development and computing - Cybernetics, humans as subjects in the technological system system, not objects operated upon by it or customers passively consuming it - Accepting the clear evidence, helpful harmless AI is woke AI

This drives me CRAZY. I grew up playing sports w/ boys. I played on a U12 boys select soccer team, b4 switching to a U12 girls team that kept beating us. Nobody had any issue with any of it. Youth sports have never had the strict sex/gender boundaries that “XX-XY” activists are now trying to defend.

Andrew D Thaler@drandrewthaler.bsky.social

I live in a rural town and, like, I don't know how to tell you this, but the girls play on the boys team and vice versa all the time because otherwise we don't have enough players for a game and it's literally always fine so stop being weirdos about kids sports and just let trans kids play.

Thirty years ago I was on a high-volume high-aggro mailing list, and when someone lost it like this the tradition was for someone to take the text of the message, alphabetize it, paste it into a reply, and say “these words didn’t appear to be in any particular order so I alphabetized them for you”

One of the greatest scams in the immigration system has been calling these people "judges." They are at-will employees of the President. They have never had a shred of "judicial" independence, and they are not actually judges in any real sense. Sure, they preside over hearings ... for their boss!

Trump’s DOJ told a judge how to rule. Then it pulled her from court. Karen Donoso Stevens offers a rare firsthand look at the administration's campaign to transform the immigration court system. www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2026/...

A common experiment in phishing research is testing which personality types are resilient to phishing. It turns out every test gets different results, because everyone is vulnerable to emails crafted tor their personality. It's dangerous to trust someone who knows you and is trying to trick you.

thinking fondly again of the college girl at the donut place, who made a little muslim boy bounce giddily out the door after she told him his donut was free, and who waved me away and said "you're good" when it was my turn to pay and then, when asked if there was a deal that day said "i hate my job"

So my old version of Office 2021 apparently got EOL'd ten days ago The support doc on the "End of Support" page says things will continue to work like normal But I can't save files anymore unless I sign up for an M365 subscription, which I neither want nor need

This is really good, too. Interview with one of the whistleblowers. George Schultz's grandson. I agree with him that the movie does a very poor job establishing just how messed up Theranos was and the fraud they perpetrated on patients and investors. www.youtube.com/watch?v=nj96...

I’m okay with this rhetoric. Is it the full truth? Not imo. But neither was 20c rhetoric about masterpieces and great books. That, too, undervalued the collective part of thought. But if someone is speaking passionately in a way that motivates people to read and think, I’ll take the win.

Okay, look, I know obviously this is the most corrupt administration ever, and we should throw Jared down a well, but I just want to say... when you're committing $700M in crimes, USE A LAPTOP?! Don't do billion-dollar-crimes on a *phone*! Can't even buy _plane tickets_ on a phone!

Eons ago I was a copyeditor. People think it means you just know everything, but really the job is recognizing what you need to look up and confirm. (A bit like librarying!)

They both did it, it was a joint effort, it’s one of the crazier things to happen in the national security space (which is really saying something) and every government should be scrambling to reduce dependence on—and as soon as possible get off—Starlink/shield or any Musk product, including the US.

A thing everyone would hate but would be great art would be for one of these comic creations to return but the sequel is just played entirely straight as the tragedy it actually is. Alan Partridge, now ranting about how woke is why he doesn’t have Clive Myrie’s job. Ali G doing sales.

This thread is essential reading. We’re gonna need to fight some battles.

Late to this Bloomberg piece on Marc Andreessen. This is one of the key things. Andreessen is *angry* about how he has been treated, when any objective observer might note he has benefited enormously from the institutions he now purports to detest. www.bloomberg.com/news/feature...

In a Signal chat that captured his right-ward turn, Andreessen cast himself as the spokesman of the forgotten midwest: “I was born in 1971 in Iowa and grew up in Wisconsin. My people are furious and not going to take it anymore.” Reality: he gives zero fucks about "his people" including family.
