I love living on the border of First Hill and Pioneer Square and taking a ferry from SeaTac Airport to West Seattle. It's too bad about what happened to Lake Union though.

Sort of insane fact about how broken US urban planning is—America now spends more building *just the lights for roads and highways* than on all subways & ground mass transit combined Spending on roadway *pavement* is 18x transit spending

Who do you want to have the final say on street safety projects in historic districts: 1) The Seattle Department of Transportation’s Chief Transportation Safety Officer Or 2) Historic boards SDOT could consult historic boards to ensure a continuity of character without giving them a veto on safety

Seattle Streets Alliance@streetsalliance.bsky.social

Just this year, the Pioneer Square Preservation Board blocked SDOT's proposal to prevent illegal car parking and improve safety and accessibility at 18 intersections in Pioneer Square. These intersections have a history of crashes, and SDOT knew how to make them safer, but were not allowed to.

Route 8’s eastbound on-time performance is on track to exceed 80% in September 2026. This will be the first time eastbound Route 8 trips meet Metro’s 80% on-time goal in at least 7 years.

A dedicated transit lane separates buses from general purpose traffic and insulates its speed and reliability from the variability of car traffic.

I’m not a “fire them all” kind of person but the traffic engineers who got this so dramatically wrong need to fundamentally reexamine their assumptions.

It’s incredible how a fucking bike lane gets delayed for 15 years in Ballard over “environmental review” and we just decide cars return to pike place in 6 weeks with no process

The principles underlying Vision Zero in Seattle are excellent but the culture change hasn't happened and so SDOT is continuing to build and rebuild deadly streets. Here is my 🧵thread of actions that can help Vision Zero back on track.

Some things I've learned about legislative advocacy, and I think my record speaks for itself. 1. Start by asking for everything you want. Stop preemptively negotiating against yourself. The process of passing the bill will whittle it down. Why started with a whittled down product?

With just a few minor modifications we could easily make Seattle Center accessible to cars. It's frankly quite problematic that people can't just drive up to the International Fountain or the Mural Amphitheatre

I don't understand why parking enforcement everywhere tries to treat their job as some sort of friendly negotiation to do whatever they can to avoid giving the car driver a ticket. Just literally write the ticket. No questions, no negotiation, no extralegal grace period... just write the ticket. 🫠

👮‍♂️📞 "you called 311?" 👮‍♂️📞 "Are you still at that location?" Me: No 👮‍♂️📞 "so you don't want to meet with police regarding this?" What the heck - just ticket the vehicles parked illegally in the sidewalk extension. It's not complicated. 311-27906359

Her direct quote: "You can propose a sales tax for public safety, and no one blinks an eye. You can propose a sales tax for roads, and no one blinks an eye. But when a progressive mayor proposes a sales tax for public transit, all of a sudden some people are very concerned about taxes."

This is the space between parked cars and same direction traffic with a small car hugging the centerline. Imagine it’s a box truck and there is traffic in the other lane. And they decided to pass you, on a bike. Tell me they”gave space” and it was a “freak accident”. Fuck all the way off.

RapidRide G hit a huge milestone last month seeing 7,325 weekday average boardings Its high water mark is now at over 3,250 riders per mile. A single digit number of cities have a bus line with a ridership per mile half that high and only a few with ridership per mile higher

In just 17 years, Seattle went from not having light rail to having the most ridden system in the nation. We’ve proven how leadership & investment can change a city and people’s lives for the better

Yonah Freemark@yonahfreemark.com

Seattle's light rail & streetcar lines carried 4.8 million riders in April—a 44% increase above March, after Link Line 2 was extended to connect Seattle & Bellevue across Lake Washington. Seattle's light rail & streetcar lines are now the most-ridden in the nation, above LA, Boston, or San Diego.

A reminder that Molly Moon Neitzel signed a petition and gave a statement to stop bike lanes from going in near her shop in Bellevue. Salt & Straw, on the other hand, works with a charity to make sure kids in Portland have bikes. Vote with your dollars!

This could be the most important week for mass transit in Seattle since voters rejected the 2nd Forward Thrust initiative in May 1970. On Thursday, the Sound Transit board will consider a resolution from board chair (and Snohomish County Exec) Dave Somers that would gut ST3. We have to stop it. 🧵

The City of Ottawa posted the raw speed data from before and after Doug Ford banned speed cameras and the effect is so obvious it's not even necessary put a line marking when that happened. This chart shows the percentage of drivers going 15km/h or more over the posted limit.

The part where the Waterfront did a bait and switch by showing generously wide and direct renderings for their bike/scooter trail in the design phase, but then actually built an unnecessarily narrow and windy route? bsky.app/profile/qagg...

Qagggy!@qagggy.bsky.social

The way the Office of the Waterfront unnecessarily degraded the functionality of the bike lane by making it wrap tightly around each parking pullout.

I know you're facing a lot, @mayorofseattle.bsky.social but hear me out. Make Westlake pedestrian-only again. One block, that's it.

Seattle Department of Transportation@transportation.seattle.gov

Crews moved the barrier back in place many times. The challenge is that bolting it down requires drilling and we need to be very careful above the transit station roof. Today we replaced a section near the intersection with tuff curb and posts which are less likely to be pushed into the bike lane.

CheeToS reposted

Letting business/property owners override the Vision Zero safety team based on vibes is par for the course at SDOT and needs to change. Making intersections safer by improving visibility is a proven strategy. Of the proposed locations with pedestrian collisions, 0 remain in the plan.

Ryan Packer@typewriteralley.bsky.social

SDOT is essentially confirming that business owners and property owners near areas where corrals had been previously proposed got to veto those locations, without directly saying this.
