Good thread with one addition: I think Eby defaulted to backroom politicking over making the public case. It wasn't just the disqualification but how he took on many files. While that can work as a Minister, it ultimately undermines a Premier who needs to be seen as open and accountable.

Stewart Prest@stewartprest.ca

One more BC thread. The NDP are going to spend a lot of time figuring out what went wrong. I think Eby never found his stride as premier, and the path to leadership was where things started to go wrong. Eby wasn't used to being the bad guy, but the disqualification of Appadurai did not go over well.

If true, lessons for the NDP are fourfold: 1. don't short circuit leadership races. 2. Figure out what the right policy is, and push it through. 3. Make sure you find ways to convincingly tell the story of those changes. 4. Don't make it all about polarizing partisan politics. Voters HATE that.

Instead, he increasingly relied on partisan politicking. He made case less for his own government, and more against the Conservatives. This election was brazen in its opportunism, and disheartening in its deliberate polarization. Voters responded very poorly to both—esp NDP voters who stayed home.

On issues like housing, where on his watch the province made long term bets (correctly IMO!), the lack of positive response also rattled him. I think he became overly sensitive to criticism and fearful of taking a wrong step, and on many files that meant taking no meaningful steps at all.

From that point on, I think he had trouble trusting his instincts and pushing things through. The contrast between his time as AG, pushing through difficult reforms on files like ICBC and his timid, indecisive approach as premier to everything from DRIPA to decriminalization was remarkable.

🧵 Matt Yglesias is one of the biggest reasons the Democratic Party leadership is so feckless, cowardly, and lazy. I'm not exaggerating. Yglesias is often a featured speaker at private Democratic Party events, despite almost always being wrong. Let's discuss...

A helpfully clear exchange here Hasan: "So your argument is that [Minnesota ICE protesters] should stay at home because immigration is a salient issue for Donald Trump. Opposing ICE is only going to help Trump. Wait until we win the election in 2028." Yglesias: "Yes that is what I would have said"

Rare author opinion incoming: I don’t care about faithful adaptations of source material. The source material exists, it will always be there. Anything that was inspired by it is new and deserves to be new and I don’t have to engage with it if I don’t want to. I love new perspectives.

The patchwork worldwide legal framework resulting from the ungrounded moral panic over people under 18 using the internet has a lot of us making extremely unpleasant choices. The blame lies on the governments mandating them.
