My obsession with traffic signals' overdesign stems from the fact that they are relatively simple objects, and the bloat in their size and specs that burdens our built environment is particularly easy to see. Also, a symbol of the "quantity-over-quality" approach to design typical of NA engineering

Politico wrote up Zohran playing basketball with the uncovering-a-big-scandal tone the same day the NYTimes wrote up "credible allegation that The President of the United States raped a woman" as a political strategy story. Broken media in a nutshell

Not every occurance in a sports event should be a "lets check the tape in ultra slow motion" opportunity for litigation. Sometimes just have an experienced, knowledgable guy who was watching it make a determination.

Trying to think, for some reason, of what sports venues, past or present, have famous *addresses*. All I can think of is Wrigley Field at 1060 W. Addison, and maybe, kinda sorta, the old Montreal Forum at St. Catherine and Atwater. Excluding vanity addresses, any others?

The industry “experts” that have captured US/Canadian building codes will really just say things like ‘English people have to put out fires by themselves with buckets’

Stephen Jacob Smith@stephenjacobsmith.com

Omfg!! 14:45: “…the cultural values are vastly different. In England…they don't have fire recall the way we do—they have fire brigades, and people in the building use buckets while waiting for the brigade. In the U.S., we design elevators to perform specifically so firefighters can use them safely.”

I think more Americans need to understand that their built environment is regulated by the groupthink of unaccountable organizations whose members think the sky is a different color abroad.

I’m biased and have friends there, but I honestly think Minnesotans are above average at social cohesion in the US because “doing things mildly against their will” is so much of their basic m.o.

Snowden St.@snowden.st

no society or human culture can exist without the regular practice of “they went out again, mildly against their will, to the lodge or some church committee”

a somewhat underrated long term impact of trump is that a sizeable portion of people have never been politically active in a non-trump world. I have never cast a ballot in a presidential election that didn't have his name on it and I'm almost 30. He's politics to a huge chunk of people.

When LA Metro gave up on collecting and enforcing fares, Jeff Bezos didn't pay the bill. The military didn't pay. The LAPD didn't pay. Caltrans didn't pay. Riders paid, by receiving worse transit service. We pay either way. Might as well make transit better instead of worse.

turns out that voting is a very good way to kick right wing authoritarians out of power

The long-serving strongman leader of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, has conceded defeat in an election that pitted him and his right-wing party against a diverse student-led opposition movement that spent two years protesting his government.

My only Cheesecake Factory take is that their commitment to scratch cooking (literally everything is made from raw ingredients inside the restaurant, no offsite prep or pre-packaging) is cool.

The panic of 1873 is really hard to conceptualize. It was actually the longest economic contraction in U.S. history!

Rob Cyran@robcyran.bsky.social

Now this is what you call a panic - over half the railway bonds (which were most of listed bonds) in NY went into default in 1873. (Reading 1873 by Ahamed so all in this thread is from the book)

If you are specialized in almost any capacity, the number of open jobs in the metro you live in at any one time is so small.

Matt Darling@besttrousers.bsky.social

Like a pretty good job search is: - Check to see if there are any new jobs posted - Apply to one or two jobs - Maybe email a friend or former colleague and do some informal networking. That's maybe 3 hours/day.

We are observing effects of real changes in the economy that are not going to show up easily in the data because this is entire website of W-2-son-of-W-2 employees that forget that this is not how it has always worked for everybody.

Bjorn reposted

One thing that I think we do tend to forget, though, as a person who does believe in data, is that this is official on-the-books data. One of the ongoing pressures that is very hard to measure is everything getting more digitized means less fraudulent activity.

Matt Darling@besttrousers.bsky.social

"Doesnt inflation spike as well?" Sure, but we can of course look at real wages (that is, wages after adjusting for inflation) and confirm that the "vibecession" occured during an increase in real earnings, especially for the bottom quartile of earners.

DC's public schools have a 5-day weekend leading up to and on Election Day, good thing no one in this city works in politics, government, or related fields because that would be really inconvenient for parents.

An international comparison I would like to see is how different countries handle the handful of “frequent flyer” problem riders. What do other countries nominally say that they will do to penalize repetitive fare dodgers and vandals, and how are internal or legal cases actually disposed of.

Connor Crowley@croweleycf.bsky.social

The Dutch have figured out how to have effectively 0 fare evasion on buses (it is in-fact the mode with the lowest fare evasion across all transit modes in the Netherlands) while charging a (expensive) fare AND NOT using proof of payment inspection.

IIRC the ~4th fare evasion penalty in Germany can include jail time. Is that just a nominal penalty never actually applied (like how some US statutes say for low-level speeding tickets “up to a $50 fine or 30 days in jail”)? What happens to people who just won’t pay their fines or follow rules?

it's such a stupidly american hubsristic thing. other states manage to have immigration and customs enforcement the general thing without insane abuses. it's a normal thing that governments do for obvious reasons. treat it like a actual policy/political problem instead of an original sin.

Can we have a serious conversation in the planning world about the proliferation of uber-woke/protest/communal representation language being used to oppose safe streets and transit? Because it's a real thing that's happening a lot and our systems are not equipped to deal with it.

The folks who were going to protest the Bergen St. bike boulevard and bus redesign on Thursday are now doing it on Saturday morning. The white women organizing this have coopted BLM imagery, and they've dropped the fact that they're protesting against "fast buses" from some versions of the flyer.

The La Salle Hotel?! It had two stairs! It was also 22 stories tall and had 1,172 guest rooms. This is what chairs of important ICC committees (not randos!) think is in the same universe as a small apartment building.

Mo Zhu@moinmybackyard.bsky.social

Now we are talking about why multiple stairs were required. Wycoff hotel in Atlanta 119 people dead. Photograph of lady who jumped out of the building. [it's a black and white photo because we are using examples from the before times.] Also cites Lasalle Hotel 61 dead and Dubuque 16 dead.
