Jenrick has set out how Reform would maximise our “Brexit freedoms”. And this is their list. This is the very best they can come up with. “Re-legalise imperial units” It’s truly pathetic that this is the pinnacle of their Brexit fever dream. And that anyone would still back this ruinous idiocy…

Also, and I think I speak for the entire IT sector, do t replace GDPR! It was a horrendous pain to implement and changing to a new set of rules would be the same

Back to 1841 and we can reintroduce Whitworth as our standard measurement for threads and totally obliterate any chance of selling equipment abroad. Smashing move there Baldrick. They really are stupid!

53. The return of terms such PoliceMEN, FireMEN as women have MEN in them (so it’s fine) 54. Making the speed limit on motorways 80mph because brakes are better 55. No more sourdough 56. All pensioners to be granted an errand boy, simply addressed as ‘boy’ 57. White families in ads (but no gingers)

Pints of wine…I guess. As has been stated elsewhere, Brexit is now the status quo, it’s up to them to justify why everything is just peachy right now. Good luck with that 😬

Re introduce 100w filament bulbs, ban on double glazing and do away with pesky insulation and do away with door locks, back to the day where you can leave the doors open but it does make it easier for the Reform goons to invade and cart dissenters off. That ring camera, come in handy for reform.

The biggest risk is the last one. All they need to do, to remove social, medical, food & fisheries, health and safety and other protections is to do nothing, and they would all disappear after 5 years.

Should have got rid of all imperial measurements around the same time as deciminalisation..... Oh, fuck! They're not going to bring back pounds, shillings & pence are they?]. I'm 61 and never used imperial at school, but have been indoctrinated with MPH, pints, 12" rulers, "pound of flesh" etc.

So none of it achieves anything useful and the sunset clause one is a rehash of the Tories disastrous policy. Ten years of reduced trade and isolation for this rubbish? Pathetic.

It’s all real. Here’s his list on “reducing the cost of hiring British workers”… He’d do it by getting rid of their newly won employment rights. Because not being able to exploit and abuse people is so expensive for businesses.

Repealing all remaining EU laws would destroy UK trade. That's why the Tories never went through with it. As every economic and business expert explained in 2016, the UK economy is wedded to EU regulations whether we are in or out. Divergence just means more paperwork for businesses

It doesn't help that the media constantly gave equal screen time to experts as they did far-right activists, giving the impression that their views all had equal weight. Brexit was the death of expert options and lay groundwork for future politicians and journalists to completely ignore experts

Point 50, legalising imperial units doesn't mean any business or shops are going to change to units to something no young people understand. Point 51, review could mean anything or nothing. Point 52, we will either repeal some laws or we wont. The usual guff that only appeals to their base.

They say that allowing imperial measurements makes it easier to export to US. Of course the American imperial units have different definitions to British imperial so are we going to take back control by using American units?

Every other country in the world manages to trade with US without using imperial units, except Myanmar and Liberia. Both of those are working towards transition to metric.

Bring back poppy seeds and barleycorns as a unit of length. 4 poppy seeds to the barleycorn and 3 barleycorn to the inch. Now calculate the speed in poppyseed per hour if a car traverses 3500 barleycorns in 23 imperial minutes. Answers on a postcard to Reform plc HQ using their freepost address.

We had the pint, the pound, the mile, the three pin plug, the veto. We also had higher GDP, free movement and zero small boats. Can someone explain what we were meant to be taking control of. Farage needs to own the stain of this utter catastrophe.

To be fair, I still think in imperial measures but I learned both systems in school as far back as the late fifties/early sixties. If something is 6ft, I can usually fathom out that it is roughly 2 meters. ;-)

Sadly, it's not just plonkers in the Tories & the further-führer-Right grasping at some long decomposed delusion of English-(not UK)-supremacy, but Labour MPs, too. Where do these petty isolationists come from? - the MPs, I mean. We know why the media proprietors want it.

53. Anything written after 1968 is not real music and must be referred to as "that bloody racket" 54. Bring back caning in schools 55. Fuck it, just whip schoolchildren on the daily, irrespective of whether they've done anything wrong or not 56. White dog poo

There are potential benefits in terms of the ability to escape from a neoliberal (and erroneous) economic framework. But all parties except the Greens are sticking to economy as a household, fiscal rules nonsense which is part of a model that has cemented trickle up economics.

imo the only response to the far right is harden governance, human rights and equality, regulate media and put this beyond the meddling of a parliamentary mood swing. Railgun us back into the EU and lock the door so they can't yank us out.

Maybe they need to have a word with Jacob Rees-Mogg. He might still have all his old notes they could recycle, it could save them sometime and help them prepare their excuses for when it fails again. So much for offering change.

Jenerick just another conservative reject trying to keep his snout in the trough, trying to appeal to utter morons and racist imbeciles. No sane intelligent person would want the imperial system back, and reform voters who struggle with decimal would have a meltdown, how many ounces in a stone etc

Sadly, we are forgetting that Brexit wasn't won on logic. It was won on 'feeling'. Forgotten parts of the UK wanted someone to blame for their pathetic lives. The Tories & Farage gave them the EU. Very little has changed. We cannot educate the willfully ignorant!!

A lot of reforms "ideas" are either about going backwards to previous times or changing things because they're from the EU. None of which is remotely practical. And that's before you get to their racist policies and idiotic spending plans etc

So many of these people miss the point of laws governing our interactions with other nations (like GDPR and trading standards). They have to be at least bilateral, preferably multilateral. Otherwise, to borrow a phrase from that buffoon Johnson (yes, I see the irony), it's just political onanism.

Ahhh yes the good old days... A quarter pond of midget gems..Will Re£orm legislate for the return of the liquorice ones please.. And I remember getting a half pound of Victory Vs....Wonder if they'll legislate for the return of ether too. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Re-legalise? They aren't actually illegal just restricted to make trading easier across the world as only 3 countries use the old imperial system and of course America is one of them

Imagine ordering in anything that requires weight or length measurements from Europe .... It will mean a cost increase, because you would need to round everything up.....

This nonsense that the EU put laws onto our Statute Books without permission is just one of the deeply stupid things the gammon believes. Along with the belief that Pavel the untrained (they’re never trained) electrician is stealing his job.

And change those measurements in tunnels ffs I am furious to see EU numbers on a wall instead of good old British numbers.British numbers for British tunnels!!!! That was the sort of argument from the Tories about a‘Brexit benefit’ maybe someone can clarify it as it was mental at the time as is now

It's pretty good personal revisionism on his part, someone who was once a remainer. I heard that rees-mogg's support a few years ago for 1-pint Champagne bottles single-handedly boosted sales...er...

I teach L2 Functional Skills Maths (GCSE equivalent but with a narrower, more useful in daily life curriculum) and have to teach imperial/metric conversions to 16 year olds. It makes me want to weep! I’m rapidly approaching retirement and went to primary school in the 70s. I was taught only metric.

Do you remember Rees-Mogg being challenged as to the benefits, and his number one was "you know the signs in tunnels telling you how far the exit is, and they're funny looking numbers? We'll sort that by using imperial again." That was it, the prime example he could cite on national television.

I’m in my 70th decade and don’t use or want to use or need to use imperial units. Jenrick’s not even old enough to have been taught imperial. Does he know how irritating & irrational cwt.st.lbs.oz or gal.qts.pts.gills are? How far back are we going, roods & perches? What an idiot.

Jenrick and Farage still haven't woken up to the fact that the EU does not have a major influence on most of our laws, and the ones they do actually protect us, why they haven't been removed. As to imperial measures, my day would be incomplete without my 'yard of ale'.

I’m 64 years old and fell into that group that in school was never taught imperial, because we were going decimal. I have no concept of inches, pounds etc., I would be lost. So presumably only people in their 70s or 80s will vote for this, the perfect ReformUK audience.

I’m in my 70’s and am quite happy working in either system. However, I would never advocate reverting to Imperial. It would be a disaster. Don’t worry though; there is zero chance it’ll happen.

So I just googled Jenricks age and he’s younger than me! Born in 82 so people should definitely quiz him on imperial measurements as he would have never been taught them and won’t have a clue

I know we all did this 10 years ago but when Brits talk about imperial measurements they want miles, pints and at a push pounds whilst keeping their mm spanner’s etc. when we’ve got pints in pubs, miles on road signs and if you have an old cook book you can work out what a pound of mince is

He'll know the basics but struggle on the minutiae like everyone always did! There'll be millions of tradesmen, lots will be Reform voters, out there thinking they can't revert from the metric system without massive issues. It's a really stupid thing for Reform - fill your boots Bob!

I work for a smallish family run company who have farmers mentality and never throw anything away, we have a load of old imperial spanner’s in the yard and you can use them for anything. (Okay if you can’t find the right one you can get close and round off the nut)

No tradesmen will change anything all these people would achieve is making shops put metric & imperial on products…… like most supermarkets already do with milk

And still Farage is given prime BBC radio 4 time at this very moment to spout his petulant, bitter nonsense

I can hear that empty Brexit barrel being scraped as he speaks. At the end of all this nonsense is a hard fact.. Reform have nothing to offer anyone under 60 who isn’t already racist. Their pool of potential voters is drying up faster than whatever dries up fast. Something to look forward to!

I'm sure their next set of ideas will include rebuilding the empire. I mean that's the period in history Reform types dream of. They would rejoin the EU if they could rule it.

It’s ridiculous. Imperial measures are not illegal anyway. I use both metric and imperial so do local shops.

Same here. At work I used metric measures, but I'm of an age where imperial measures make more sense at the shops. Even the kids employed on Saturdays at the butchers know how many grams there are in 1/2 lb. Oddly, they don't seem to know what a dozen is.

I’ve never known the news of a baby’s birth include the weight in anything other than pounds and ounces.🤷🏼‍♀️

GDPR is the gold standard of data protection legislation and literally the envy of the world. NZ has it's own privacy act but their businesses have to comply with GDPR if it has an office, offers goods & services, or monitors online activity of individuals in EU. Which UK would also have to do.

Well they might well make their finances worse… but this is definitely not what they thought Brexit sunlit uplands were… surely?!! I just can’t get over how crushingly tedious and pointlessly bureaucratic their ideas are… Christ. It’s all so feeble.

Ah, sensible policies for the modern world. I hear that he forgot to mention that everyone will get a daily ration of snuff and rum.

I’m 83 and it does nothing for me. My view is that it is a requirement for Reform membership that their IQ is between at least 75 and 90. (When you know, you know!)

Yes, we started it in 1965, but many people still talk about feet and yards (I admit I do too sometimes), weight-loss TV programmes still use stones (I can't relate to that at all), we buy petrol in litres but still talk about miles per gallon. I really wish we would finally put it all to bed.

I grew up with rods, chains, tanners and even florins. I'm quite happy with what we've now got, thanks. We'll eventually stop driving miles; drinking pints; auctioning bloodstock in guineas but, meanwhile, it's all nostalgic nonsense meant to appeal to all the Spitfire pilots born since 1960.

I learned imperial in the early 60s. It was a pain in the arse remembering all the different measures/units. I was so relieved when decimalisation/metrication happened. In my later school life everything became easier. Who the hell would want to go back? 🙄

Hang on a minute young lady I may be in my mid 80s but I ain’t quite pushing up the daisies… Going back to imperial measurements, weights, money etc would not only stupefy the Gen Z lot but also the Reform Klingons…

Australia switched to metric across a staged timeline from 1970 to 1988. Nobody here still thinks about the imperial system. It isn't something on anyone's radar. The only time you see it is in clothes waist sizes at some stores and TV screen sizes.

Haven't they already tried the last two items on that list heaps of times before - jabbering on about cutting red tape and feeding regulations into the shredder?

This really annoys me why are these people so unchallenged. Brexit supporters must be thick as pig shit. There is a fundamental problem with these proposals. They treat regulatory independence as an achievement in itself, without considering the economic, legal and practical consequences. 🧵 1/5

49. Replacing GDPR: risk is weakening personal data protections, undermining the arrangements that allow info to flow between the UK and EU. Businesses operating internationally will need to complying with two different regulatory regimes. Uk already has same deal as NZ it is called UK-GDPR 🧵 2/5

50. Reintroducing imperial measurements: What problem does this actually solve? British industry, science and international trade operate predominantly in metric. Reintroducing imperial units more widely risks additional conversion costs, labelling complexity and unnecessary confusion. 🧵 3/5

51. Reviewing unchanged EU law: Perfectly reasonable, provided the review is evidence-based. Legislation should be judged on its effectiveness, not where it originated. Replacing an effective regulation simply because it has European origins is ideology rather than sound governance. 🧵 4/5

If they are that keen on weird number bases for imperial units, why not go the whole hog and ditch decimal currency? They have nothing, absolutely nothing, to offer. They are rapidly becoming (if not already) an irrelevance…especially Jenrick.

Repealing workers’ rights ought to set alarm bells ringing for most workers. Unless you’re an arch-Brexiteer, of course. You voted for this direction in the referendum. Now the consequences are becoming clear. Once bitten, twice stupid.

Reintroducing Imperial units is Reform’s ‘Monkey Tennis’ I think. Last gasp desperation from a bunch of useless, lazy and disinterested grifters. The BBC and Sky should gang their heads every time they have them on.

Captain Ted: "They'd better not bring back fathom and chains for maritime measurements. Replacing all my charts and navigation instruments would cost thousands of doubloons!'

He gave us pints of sparkling wine, although I have never seen it on a shelf. I think the civil service deliberated undermined his imperial survey as they allowed free text and extra options to be added to the questions !
