The thing that everyone thinks is nuts, but I absolutely think would work: a presentation that looked like an Apple keynote product launch, but for all the cool shit that the government makes for people. Cancer treatments, national parks, space discoveries, free tax filing, cool new airports.

If you were in Congress, what would you do for the State of the Union? What do you think Dems should do?

They could do a handoff like Apple does with their execs, but it would be the small handful of Dems that don't completely suck shit at communicating. Could give the average person a chance to see that AOC isn't the caricature they've been sold.

I have always thought that the government should have a twice-weekly "what we did this week" show/stream/whatever that shows what all these people do and how it helps and why only the government can get it done. Yes it's state propaganda. Propaganda can be used for both good and evil.

FDR's fireside chats are still a good idea but no method of delivering such a thing can survive a 21st century political focus group.

It has always been a weakness for the Democrats that they don’t really understand advertising & propaganda (which are twins, I swear) and so try to reach people rationally. I think your idea is like Walz’s “They’re weird and gross,”—it catches the weak spot & hits it with a hammer.

I have thought that Gavin Newsom should be spending his time beefing up good government in California and then selling that nationally instead of debating MAGA folks. This would be a great way to sell it. But yeah, maybe we're nuts/nerd

I often think of red state governors who only wanted federal money if they didn't have to advertise the source and what a strategic blunder that was by Dem administrations to accept those conditions.

Maybe with the minuscule cost per taxpayer in the lower corner: ‘National parks conserving our irreplaceable natural heritage — 13¢’ ‘Education to help enrich your children and their classmates — 27¢’ ‘Armed Forces to protect our nation and our allies — $1’ and so on…

Like the premise, hate the word "free" Everyone knows it's not actually free, it comes from our paychecks. But show people all the good, cool, and needed shit it goes to and they might not be so mad at it. You can make it a sense of pride. "The lives Medicaid saves? You did that."

This was, incidentally, pretty much my pitch when I was briefly being considered for a fairly senior tech role in the Biden admin, but I don’t think I had fairly good odds at getting very far in that process anyway.

I'm constantly discovering cool shit my local government offers that I only found out about because I dug into a niche interest. we need to be yelling from the roof tops how cool our shit and what's on offer and now under threat

Not a replacement for SOTU, but a supplement. Make sure progress is seen as a positive, not just physical objects, completed projects. Cool NIH findings, research, etc. And use it to educate. Treat the population like you trust them.

Hell yes replace the SOTU! Use this as the rebuttal. You know he's gonna get up there and lie anyway, just ignore everything, start with a SNL-style monologue opener ridiculing tRump's theatrical nonsense and launch into a Jobs-ian launch of iGov new features 🤣

Democrats have so many Hollywood actors and directors backing them up. I don't see why can't they use them to create PSAs showing exactly what the government makes and provides and how exactly the government works. We need a new School House Rock movement and push those videos to go viral.

The better a government works, the more boring it is. Smooth highways. Transportation that runs on time. Toilets that flush and sewers that carry away the waste. Dams that turn flood risks into picnic areas and reliable electricity. "Cool flashy shit" is a for-profit attitude.

For example, Theodore Roosevelt, a Republican, doubled the size of the national park system when he became president. Now the party thinks our assets are theirs to do with as the career criminal in chief wants.

Related, people should get a yearly receipt of how taxes they pay break down in terms of spending and benefits. 10k in taxes paid = $1400 for defense, $300 for cancer and vaccine research, etc. Hard to be mad about foreign aid if people know it costs them like $2 personally.

I could see them doing this, if they weren’t the Washington Generals to the GOP’s Globetrotters, but they are so well keep getting more “leaders” like Schumer, Jeffries, and Harris.

Honestly every democrat needs to boycott. Set up a separate televised meeting and explain in 5th grade english what the heck is happening. This is not the time to go and sit with those traitors. Ostracize them

Depending on what he says, I may walk out. If he lies, because of course he will, I might call him on it or turn my back. If it really got bad, I would walk out on mass. Make your presence known. Don't let him get away with his stupid lies.

Imagine a Switcher-style ad campaign where each ad is one federal gov employee talking about the impact of their work. Closing with: “I’m ______ and I work for you”

It isn’t nuts, Anil. It’s smart. Good marketing and product management drive customer enthusiasm. While the government isn’t a business, it does deliver products and services.

Deeply frustrating that if you really got traction on this some democrats would spend a bunch of money focus grouping the idea instead of just paying a designer to make a nice deck and trying it out.
