If you hit a dog, it's animal abuse. If you hit your spouse, it's spousal abuse. If you hit an old person, it's elder abuse. If you hit your child, it's just called parenting. That needs to end Children are not property and have the right not to be beaten.

You can't teach a child self respect if you don't appeal to their mind and their spirit when teaching right and wrong. For Christians: "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 The same was in the beginning with God" John 1:1-2

If you can't discipline a child without resorting to violence (physical, mental, or emotional), then you do not deserve to have a child. PERIOD

I just love seeing some fool who has never attempted to raise a child with autism make comments like that! If we could go back 50 years I would let you try that with my son and then see how you feel.

So you are advocating for child abuse when the child is autistic. That's extremely fucked up. What a vile piece of shit human you are.

Did you miss the point? The point is that spanking a child is physical abuse. Unfortunately, in some places including the US, this is allowed. It shouldn’t be. Just because a parent doesn’t leave marks doesn’t mean it’s not abuse.

Please show me a peer reviewed study that positively correlates literacy rates with corporal punishment? (when you're done looking up what those words mean).

When a child hits a child, we call it aggression. When a child hits an adult, we call it hostility. When an adult hits an adult, we call it assault. When an adult hits a child, we call it discipline. Haim G. Ginott

I remember the last time my mother hit me. I was a teenager. I told her to stop hitting me. And she did. It was probably an argument over my clothes. It was the 1970's and I had started wearing blue jeans.

Hear hear! Child abuse survivor checking in Children are involuntary students who have the growing brain and physique of an adult with the responsibility of children No human needs physical violence to convince and should only be used in self defense or for some crazy emergency

You also accidentally teach that kid how to whoop the ever living shit out of you and hate your abusive guts and never fear another adult ever again

Nothing should get beaten- nothing is person's property. But a light pat on the butt of a misbehaving child creates an adult who has an idea of what consequences are

I agree. Children are defenseless, imagine an adult being hit by a 10 foot tall giant that weighs 500 lbs. That's an adult hitting a child. Stop it.

THIS. My mother beat all three of us. Her reward for that is that she’s not allowed to be alone with my sister’s children.

I used to get beaten frequently. In fact it got to a point where my coping mechanism was to laugh whilst dad went for it. It constantly made things worse but I felt better. Anyway I agree beating your kids is not good, it left me pretty fucked up so putting an end to it is a must in my book.

All of you claiming it’s abuse without giving any options for getting the attention of an autistic child, don’t have a valid point. Put your money where your mouth is and provide other options instead of just complaints! I freaking dare you.

Obviously you’ve never raised a child with autism. How effective is it for the ENTIRE family to have Mom stand in front of a child during time out just to keep him/her there? What do you suggest that will get their attention?

We need to agree to the UN Rights of the Child. And reel in "religious freedom". And get rid of clergy-penitent privilege. 😭

i tried to report parental abuse as a teacher (in us-america) and my superior grimaced and told me, gently, apologetically, "it's not illegal to hit your kids" IT'S NOT ILLEGAL TO HIT YOUR KIDS this place is such a shithole

Children lose faith in adults when society fails to protect them from harm and by not taking them seriously - it only increases future chances of the behavior to normalize. Now you know another reason why I refuse to bring my progeny to this place, society does not ensure their safety or wellbeing!

There are far more damaging behaviours of child abuse than short sharp physical punishment if all else fails. Not setting boundaries, screaming back at a child screaming at you, never interacting with your child and leaving them to get all their interactions online. All much more damaging long term.

So is releasing them into society without the ability or desire to integrate and contribute and expecting society to do what a responsible parent should have done. Most children respond to good parenting skills but some don’t . What then? Physical restraint or a feral child ruining riot

I was thinking more like a smack on the arm or back of the legs. But if you are the sort of parent that speaks to their children and has another successful way of making them adhere to boundaries you will not need physical punishment. There are far too many feral children that know no limits

I learned “spare the rod, spoil the child” and “the blueness of a wound cleanses something or other”. I didn’t apply it to my kids. They did fine (my younger was a maniac, he did get a mild spanking a couple times to snap him out of it).

I stopped that pattern with my children. My brother and I were hit/spanked as children and I was determined not to do that to my children. No grandbabies yet, but I will never hit my grandchildren either and I know my kids won't hit their children either.

I’m old enough to have experienced both sides of when it was acceptable to whip a child and now it’s frowned upon if not illegal, I feel like our schools were pretty orderly then compared to today, I have three family members quit teaching because of out of control kids and parents of today

I was beaten. After I ended up in the hospital one morning after I wasn't able to sit up upon waking... I was removed from my home for 7 years. Not a damn thing ever happened to my father or stepmother.

💯 I grew up in a home that didn't use any physical discipline. My dad only raised his voice to me once and I deserved it. We have never used spanking or physical discipline with my son. We always talked it out and gave him a cooling down period to think in his room. Spanking is abuse, period.

That’s how we ended up with a spoiled child like Trump…. Like Andy Taylor says, nothing wrong with an old fashioned trip to the “woodshed” to set a child on a better path

I wish I could say CPS cares but alas, the county I last called fussed at me all “corporal punishment isn’t a crime ma’am” like if they’re willing to hit their kid at the doctors office what do you think they do at home NOT in front of mandated reporters?

I couldn't agree more. I never spanked any of my kids or grandkids. It just wasn't necessary. I talked with them instead and explained why we didn't do some things. Communication is everything and it must be started at a young age. Choose your battles! Not everything is worth arguing over.

Agreed. I spanked my son twice in his life and I can still feel them both in my shriveled, black heart all these years later. Damaged me more than him. It’s an awful practice and should be ended. I know I regret it.

Rebekah I've the evidence from parents not spanking children. They grow up self entitled, spoiled and prone to tantrums. We're not talking about abuse. We're talking about a spanking. Big difference.

Your anecdotal evidence does not outweigh decades of scientific research. If you are too impatient to properly communicate at a child's level you will either resort to violence or permissive behavior. Both create the problem you are describing. Those who communicate raise properly developed kids.

😄😄😄😄😄 Yeah, I'll stick to what the problems are with todays children compared to the past. It's stark how children are nothing close to behavior that is acceptable at home in public and in schools. The "decades of scientific evidence?" Well, it's not working.

Not going to bother picking that word salad apart, have fun abusing children while it's still legal. Hopefully the break the cycle and don't become like you.

I got my butt smacked as a child. I lost privileges, got grounded, was disciplined. I turned out to be a fully functioning adult. There are many ways, but all children need discipline and guidance. Free range child rearing produces bullies and criminals.

Of course children need discipline and guidance. No one is saying they don’t. Still no excuse to hit someone you supposedly love. I was never hit as a child. I am also a fully functioning adult. In fact, I would wager to say I function better than most adults I know.

Never did I say I believe it's OK. Try reading what I actually posted. But no discipline, like I see in most young parents these days, hurts a child just as much. Do you have kids?

I absolutely agree! I got spanked, my kids got spanked (way less that me) and I NEVER, EVER spanked my grandkids (not part of my job, my job was the no-holds -barred chocolate cupcakes and ice cream), but their parents did. Not one of us was physically or emotionally harmed.

Probably because any kind of hitting actually is violence. Sure, it’s not punching or kicking, but it’s still violence. If a stranger or an acquaintance gave you a hard slap on the ass, you’d probably consider it battery.

If TRUMPTY HUMPTY had the holy living crap beaten out of him AT LEAST once a week when he fucking needed it BADLY as an incorrigible and defiant BRAT PUNK we wouldn't be in the situation we in now!!!

Having a patent beat the 💩 outta you in the name of discipline kinda makes you not want to use physical chastisement on your kids. #BreakTheCycle

This is a fucking embarrassing tweet and you should delete it. You can violently beat and murder an animal and even eat it, and the maximum sentence you can get is about a dozen years. If you’re found found guilty of child abuse, you can get the death penalty in some states. Just fucking shame on u.

It may take a little forethought, a bit more mental effort to explain things so that a child understands, or to demonstrate the art of compromise by example, but it is so worth it. You end up with a smart, compassionate, loving child who becomes that kind of adult. Trust me.

It’s child abuse, like the rest. All against the law, but also, no enforcement, & it’s very difficult to get any consequences for the behavior. Men owned their women & children until very recently, & it was absolutely lawful for those men to employ whatever mechanisms necessary to get compliance.

“Federal definition of child abuse & neglect- any act or failure to act which results in death, serious physical or emotional harm, sexual abuse, or exploitation of a child;”

“or an act or failure to act which presents an imminent risk of serious harm to a child including but not limited to physical abuse, verbal or emotional abuse, sexual harassment, sexual abuse, inappropriate sexual behavior, neglect, & medical neglect.”

The US was founded on sexual violence, abuse, and murder. Cis het white males are very rarely convicted of any of these crimes. Hard to reverse 250 years of “we’ve always done it this way.”

My parents were divorced. Occasionally my mom would spank us. If I got in trouble at school, my dad would pick me up and take me for a ride and give me a lecture about how disappointed he was. The lecture was a more effective motivator every time. Spanking does more harm than it ever did good.

It’s assault on a minor. Pure and simple… The ‘never did me any harm’ brigade don’t understand that by advocating violence against children it really did do them a lot of harm. However, I like to think for most of us who were subject to domestic violence as kids use it to ensure our kids are safe.

If you hit a dog and everyone is laughing, it goes on You Tube and gets a million likes. If you shock a dog, it goes on a "trainer's" You Tube and get a million likes. If you choke a dog... The human race has to rid itself of its love affair with punishment as an educational system

My mum told me that if you use violence to impose your will on your child all you are doing is teaching them that violence is the answer, and if I couldn't teach my children right from wrong without hitting them then I need to check my parenting skills.

Fear. Violence is fear. Why some Countries consider indoctrinating kids into religion is child abuse and illegal. Telling a child they will burn in hell if they do not conform, is fear based & illogical. It's laziness. Education, community service, reason, takes more time & effort.

My country have had a law against child abuse since 1972. Reason every adult anywhere could slap beat mistreat abuse children. People, parents politicians said no more! That said does Denmark lack proper Animal police to handle the many animal cruelty. There has other countries us beat so to say

I never even raised my voice to my kids. Certainly not in anger, granted sometimes you have to talk louder than them so they hear your voice over the noise they're making but that's different. And they turned out fine, no axe murderers or ultra-conservatives.

Sorry to break it to you, but this is very much a speaking to brick walls situation, whoever agrees agrees and whoever disagrees will plug their ears and go "lalalalalala" My dad has beaten me when i was younger and is shocked when i hide parts of myself he is openly bigoted towards

Discipline your kids. If talking doesn’t work, or raising your voice doesn’t work, or time out.. then get their attention with a little hands on. No beating them, but a swat to the butt can get the point across. Told my mother to FO when I was 8 … once. Full smack slap across the mouth fixed it

“Fixed it?!” Try applying that logic to “fixing” a car with a “swat” to the bumper and maybe you’ll start to see why it’s complete horse shit. No one has ever gotten smarter or better at problem solving by being traumatized by an adult who can’t use their words or manage their own emotions…NO ONE.

I was a bad student at school, disrespectful, so one day a teacher wrapped my tie around my neck and manually hanged me. I was crying, but I never fucked around again. Best lesson I EVER received in life.

On the question of corporal punishment, I don't agree that it's 'traumatizing', and 'abuse', I believe inflicting pain is one tool in the arsenal of making people learn, grow, and be wise. But that's me, I deal with the world as it is, not as I wish it was.

I guess… but if anyone hits me, I’m calling the cops and I’m not waiting around to be beaten. Children don’t have that option. Why would any reasonable adult hit a child? It’s unnecessary and cruel.

Verbal abuse or physical abuse of a child is horrific. My generation glorifies spanking and its wrong. I've always thought spanking is just lazy parenting. Explaining, talking and listening is parenting. Kids shouldn't have to fear their parent. They should feel safety and love.

There is really only one person I really wanna slap, and I really wanna slap him hard across the face! TFG! But I’ll settle for dancing on his grave!

If I do any of those things, sure. If law enforcement does those things its accepted and the victim is blamed. If a wealthy person does it, the police are sorry for bothering them. We really do a poor job identifying and holding people accountable for abuse. Especially those in authority.

FUCK these other countries! I was born and raised in NYC My father got me with the belt and metal hanger because I did something wrong. If I said a bad word smacked in the mouth and I fkin guarantee you I never did it again.!! I learned, and raised my son the right way never laid hand on him!

I have spent over 30 years as an early childhood educator. In my field it is unacceptable to raise your voice, hit, or treat a child with disrespect. And yet we manage to set limits and redirect challenging behavior. I’ve raised 2 children without spanking or verbal abuse. Parents can do better.

That's lazy parenting. Takes more effort to involve your child in community, have them do labor, take away privileges & reason with them.& Some Authority should be challenged. Not all laws are correct & many are straight racist. Progress is change & questioning/challenging authority leads to change.

That is what therapy can help with. Coping mechanisms. Should be free so everyone can learn to cope with trauma in a positive way. A support group could also help you. Not saying you need kids, just saying you can find support.

Yes. I learned physicality from dear dad. He was stabbed to death when I was 17. I fought instantly for years. Right after 1st child was born I sobered up. Haven't been in a fight since. Finally totally forgave my father just 4 years ago & he killed in 1973. Giant burden lifted. Be good to yourself.

No one calls it spousal abuse. It's domestic violence. Hitting a child in the face is considered child abuse. Unless you spank them, for some reason it's okay if it's the child's ass. 😮‍💨

A parent hitting a child is a crime in my country and the state can take the child away from the abusive parents depending on the situation.

If you hit your child & you live in Wales or Scotland, it's called assault as per the Children (Equal Protection from Assault) (Scotland) Act 2019 & the Children (Abolition of Defence of Reasonable Punishment) (Wales) Act 2020. Sentences between 6 months to life in prison, depending on severity.
