Bluesky now has over 20M people!! 🎉 We've been adding over a million users per day for the last few days. To celebrate, here are 20 fun facts about Bluesky:

1. The name Bluesky was originally a placeholder for the project started by Twitter to build an open social protocol. Purely by coincidence, my mother gave me the name Lantian, which translates to "blue sky."

2. Here's an image from a presentation I gave to Twitter, representing the Twitter bird freed from a closed platform to fly in Bluesky's open ecosystem.

6. Custom feeds on Bluesky are the first implementation of algorithmic choice. Instead of using a single black-box For You algorithm, you can create and subscribe to your own. Now, there are over 50k+ custom feeds on the network! Check them out: bsky.app/feeds

10. The three largest countries on Bluesky are the United States, Japan, and Brazil, and these countries were early adopters since our invite-only days as well. Thank you for being here! 💙

11. To help us catch bugs with long threads, we used to play the "counting game" during our invite-only days. Someone would post "1," and everyone would start counting up in that thread.

12. Back in the day, Bluesky's "algorithm" was called "What's Hot," and it showed any post that got over 5 likes. When our community grew, we had to up that to 8 likes.

17. Our advisor Martin Kleppman wrote the book “Designing Data-Intensive Systems.” Good thing too, because Bluesky is now a data-intensive system!

19. Paul, Bluesky's CTO, built the earliest version of the Bluesky app, and the first client for Secure Scuttlebutt (SSB), a peer-to-peer networking protocol.

Why does your thread break off after a certain amount and is no longer in the main stream? I have to click on that last post and then it opens up more of the thread. Not very user intuitive. What's the thought process behind that?

i have bad news for you about the percentage of most apps’ userbases that are on ipads and how that tends to affect priorities (see also most newspaper apps)

Seems like BlueSky has been created and fostered by people with tech know-how and a passion and drive for innovation. Probably how Twitter started, but seeing how that's now reduced to a lumbering sloth hoovering up Temu money (🤮), it's great to see you people leading the charge.

Just goes to prove that companies unwilling to change, or do change but for the worse, will be cast aside for newer and better alternatives. FB did it to MySpace, Twitter and Instagram did it to FB, and now like a Phoenix from ashes the cycle continues. May Bluesky live long and prosper.

Yes, I have. Only a few but I thought maybe because I’m following so many old friends at one time it can’t keep up. 🤷🏻‍♀️

I don’t understand any of the technical stuff, but I do understand that this platform is run by people with ethics, who care about it being a safe and exciting place. Thanks for making it!

I'm happy enough people are finally here...like to make it where 3 hours later......😵‍💫🤬😱💥🚨✌️🤣😵‍💫 oh, damn ⌚️. Bluesky has made it🦋🦋😊

Thanks for this thread. Now I don’t feel like this is just another platform to turn sour. Interactions so far have been a breath of fresh air and boost to morale. Awesome job to all from the beginning to now.

How will you avoid being eaten by the usual US greed for more, bigger profit? How will you avoid the destinies of for example Skype, WhatsApp and for that sake Twitter? I for my part still have to see a successful US startup who’s able to resist the billions being offered by the Dark Side

Would you like to spend a few words on the mobile app? In the #flutter community I'm sure there are lots of devs who would like to know what's built with, how many people are maintaining it, and so on 🙏

Free speech with free, personal moderation (not the very unfree moderation according to the political view of one billionaire). If you can't handle (certain) opposing views you don't have to see it. If you want to, you can. I think that is a healthy way to go forward.
