This is just stupid. We had a dept of war and a separate dept of navy. The war dept was really just the Army. So the DoD wasn't a new name, it was a new, larger, and more capable organization that included all branches.

He's changing it to War Dept. because he's going to start a war with some rinky dink country just before the midterm elections so he can declare no elections next year due to the war he started. That in turn will leave the republicans in control until at least 2028.

NPR had a lot of good will from people when Trump came after them. Rather than join with that effort to resist MAGA tyranny, they have apparently decided to capitulate and report the party line.

Yeah, that’s what is called burying the lede. This makes it sound like it’s a done deal and within his authority. Journalistic malpractice that I can’t believe anyone would defend

That’s just wrong, @npr.org. The Department of War became the Department of the Army. The Department of Defense was established above the Departments of the Army, Navy, and the newly formed Air Force.

This is not accurate, @npr.org, either historically or under our laws. (The president cannot unilaterally rename a department established by Congress.) Please correct this story for your listeners and verify Trump's claims before you print them. I expect more of @npr.

Flipping heck I’m British and I even know this is nonsense and your statement is factually incorrect. The US had two departments - the War Department and the Navy Department. The DoD was created when the USAF became an independent service after the end of the SWW. bsky.app/profile/ianm...

The War Department was a separate entity to that of the Navy Department (US Navy and US Marines), and it exercised command & control over the US Army, which of course encompassed the US Army Air Force. When the DoD was created it also I believe included the creation of the US Air Force.

It seems a lot of people are not aware The Department of Defense was NEVER the Department of War but originally the National Military Establishment and the Department of War got rebranded as The Department of the Army. 😑

Trump is a criminal president. Now he is making our soldiers into criminals. Killing non-combatant civilians is a war crime and if you’re a soldier following that order, you are committing a war crime.

Jesus, NPR... 'THE CHANGE WILL RETURN' what the hell?... It's NOT a change that can be made by executive order. Congress must act to make the change. FACTS MATTER - HEADLINES AND SYNOPSIS MATTER! DO BETTER! It's not like they can take away your funding anymore.

I mean, the headline is accurate. He did sign the executive order, and in that order he directs the change. Just because he doesn't have the legal authority to actually change it, doesn't mean the didn't sign the executive order directing it's change.

The article makes it clear that it's not entirely clear if he has that authority, which is really the right way to report it. And regardless if he CAN, he already effectively did. They've already changed their branding, website (including URL), and I'm sure they're working on signage right now.

No. Without context, people think he has the authority. "trump signs executive order to rename DOD to DOW. ONLY CONGRESS has the authority to do so." "The dod was created through an act of Congress in 1949 combining the DOW (Army), Navy, and Airforce."

Yeah, after we fought two wars and decided to really try to avoid another one. This orange asshole claims to be for peace but is dying to start a new war.

Hey @npr.org A president cannot change the Department of Defense to the Department of War w/o congressional approval. The name change requires legislation. An executive order alone doesn’t give a president the authority to make this a change official. Stop being part of the problem with the bs.

This isn't correct. The Department of War, for nearly 150 years, was just the Army. There was no unified military cabinet level post overseeing the Army and Navy until DOD. Why do people keep getting this wrong?

“It's not clear whether Trump can officially change the name without congressional action.” How could it be less not clear, you dumb-fucks? DoD was established in statue by congress. Suck less.

Hey guys, it’s not true that the current Department of Defense was ever named the “War Department.” The War Department only ran the Army, and the Navy Department ran the Navy and Marines. There was no common civilian leadership of those services.

So it’s just not true that this EO is just returning DOD to a name it has been called for most of its history. Besides which, the President is seeking to disregarding a statute passed by Congress by executive fiat. The NSA of 1947 created a new department and called it the Defense Department.

Literally every single press outlet regurgitates his lies and falsehoods. And I would bet that every one of them knows it’s a lie too when they print it. Fucking disgraceful and so sad that all these cowards fold as the country is under attack from within.

This is inaccurate. The DoD is a combined department including what used to be the department of war. Also it cannot be changed by executive order. Seriously, they already cut your funding, you don't have to lie for them anymore.

Can I change @npr's name to National Propaganda Radio? I have the same legal authority to do that as Trump does to change the name of the Dept of Defense. Please stop pretending that Trump's executive orders are actual laws like those passed by Congress. You know they aren't.

This is just wrong. The Dept of War only included the Army, not the Navy/Marines or Air Force and not the ridiculous new "Space Force." Really sad to see NPR get such basic facts wrong. And Trump of course has no authority to do this so there is in fact no actual, legal change.

The Department of War was Army. There was at the time a Department of the Navy. After WW2 these were consolidated into the DoD. The original name of the DoD was the National Military Establishment, not the Department of War. Please get your facts in order.

Furthermore, Trump has no authority to rename the agency. This should be the main drive of reporting on this story. Not, "Oh, look, he's doing a thing" but "Oh, look, that's a completely made-up power he's attempting to gift himself".

It’s not changing the name back. Prior to 1947, we had the Department of War (Army) and Department of the Navy. In 1947 by act of Congress they and the new US Air Force were in incorporated into the “National Military Establishment.” In 1949 it was renamed the Department of Defense.
