I had to go on Twitter to confirm this was real because Ship Awesome Games In A Weekend having a hand with six fingers was so on the nose I was about to pass out

This shit just writes itself at this point. Just the name "Epic AI MegaJam" is a joke that best describes what is going on with these companies.

That's super interesting. I wondered how the designers would tackle this problem. This worked in the original OoT because 3D games were brand new and it was easy to suspend your disbelief about the size of the world. But we're too accustomed to modern, realistic 3D games for that to still work.

A post about the latest Musk thing shows up on a tech forum. You mention that the man is responsible for 100,000+ deaths and people just flame you or even cheer. Hardest thing about the post-truth world for me is the constant feeling of having to fight over the zeitgeist. (Of course, it's useless.)

This DJ set is fantastic! Listened through the whole thing maybe half a dozen times by now. And what a cool setting to boot.

I love these login.jp_ videos; this one features English DJ & producer Bonobo playing some downtempo ambient electronica in a Shinjuku dyeing workshop. [kottke.org]

Regarding AI: has there been another technological innovation that elicited roughly equal amounts of glassy-eyed fanaticism and visceral revulsion? I don't think this dynamic is going to change and I wonder where it's going to lead.

Personally, I find conversations with AI boosters to be challenging because they fail to understand how genuinely sickening this stuff is to a lot of us, regardless of how well it works. You want me to get excited, but all I feel is anger and grief. There's just no way to meet in the middle.

"Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results." By that measure, pairing Matter devices[1] to an Apple Home is the definition of insanity. You can attempt to pair 20 times using *exactly the same steps* and only succeed once! [1]: Ikea, specifically.

Somebody, somewhere on social media mentioned Concord grape pie, which I didn't know was a thing, so I thought I'd make one to see what it's like. Delicious! Tastes like an adult version of childhood grape candy. And I'm finally figuring out how to avoid soggy pie bottoms.

Tower of Gold is coming November 1st! 🎉 It's a massive puzzle/action game with a first-person overworld full of characters and mysteries. I'll release a trailer alongside the game, but here's a small teaser in the meantime! #indiegames #indiedev

Earlier versions of the game did acknowledge the creators of the original games at the start of each section, and I consider it unacceptable that this was removed at Jon’s direction. Stephen Totilo noticed this change and wrote a nuanced article here: www.gamefile.news/p/a-complica...

gamefile.newsA complicated gameWho gets credit for Order of the Sinking Star? Where should the names appear for the creators of its source material? And would you notice if a great game designer sat next to you?

I attended the Lucas Museum member preview, and one of my favorite pieces was a study for a long, elaborate mural titled Telephone Men and Women at Work by Dean Cornwell. Would *love* to see high-res photos of the actual mural, but looks like it's in private hands: www.bostonherald.com/2009/10/...

Seems like there were several studies featuring different designs, and I'm pretty sure this is the one actually displayed at the museum. Surely somebody took photos of the final mural before it got dismantled...!

The most absolutely massive flex from the state fair exhibit. This quilt is made of 40 years of prize ribbons from various categories at the New Mexico State Fair won by Carol St. Clair Johnson. She also won a prize for this quilt.

A century before we would move from fixed-program computers to reprogrammable ones, Ada Lovelace realized that the Analytical Engine was capable of universal computation. Reading her Notes is thrilling for her awestruck articulation of these ideas. Available now; link in reply.

but, when you start outsourcing concepts that are *very* fundamental with a high degree of agency, like problem solving, decision making, creativity, artistry, craftsmanship, and communication? you're slowly sacrificing yourself to a prediction machine. you run the risk of losing yourself

How many cities are named after a *bar fight*? "[Sebastopol, CA] was originally named Pine Grove. The name change […] has historically been attributed to a bar fight in the late 1850s, which was allegedly compared by a bystander to the long Allied siege of the seaport of Sevastopol (1854–1855)."

I read this 17 years ago and I think about it probably once a week. One of those things that I read that literally changed my political understanding of the world (and put me at odds with my family but that was coming anyway)

It's a lovely sunny day! If you're out for a walk, please take some photos of memorial benches and add them to openbenches.org We're *very* close to thirty-nine *thousand* benches mapped 😃

One of the most obnoxious errors in modern macOS. Dude, you're a fucking computer. JUST TELL ME WHAT I NEED TO DO TO UNPLUG THIS DRIVE (Oh, and status remains unchanged after several days. Yes, I'm sure it's doing something *super* important…)

Normally, the culprit seems to be something Spotlight-related. But what hare-brained engineering prevents Spotlight from pausing whenever eject is triggered…?
