with sloppy (but convincing enough) AI vibeclones on the rise, developers now face a future in which a steady stream of pre-release videos, demos, and playtests—the only reliable way to promote and build community—could be their game’s undoing

Okay, people are already getting really depressed and frustrated with the Next Fest, so I'll say what I said last time round: Wait a day or two. They order the games on the pages by hours played, and 99% of the AI garbage will sink like a stone. Right now it's just undifferentiated and unranked.

Cool. Did you know that the creator of Below the Root on Apple II went on to make an Alice in Wonderland game in the same engine, then years later ported it to the CD-i with neat art, as well as making another game in the same engine, Laser Lords, an adventure game set in space? You can just play it

personally think if the line is going to be “no gen ai in anything” then the you might have to consider divesting from AAA games entirely because this is just what the industry is now, whether they admit it so publicly or not

now that IGF voting is winding down I can say that there are not one but TWO really impressive, really good deduction games coming out in the near future. generally a very big moment for the genre but some of the work being done is extremely impressive

I appreciate this kind of stuff a lot!

i really like it when games take care to seat buildings well. this has a very natural footpath which runs off of the road to the left and runs along the foot of the wall, and the gentle mounding of the soil and vegetation at wall base works very well.

Playing Titanfall 2 again and it just fills you with sadness, that specific strain of narrative first person shooter that Half-life wrought basically does not exist any more in that same way. We barely get a confusing single player campaign stapled to a multiplayer game any more.

You can’t even comprehend how important Eien ni Hen’s work is to the fan translation community. Romancing SaGa, Fire Emblem, Sakura Wars, Tear Ring Saga, Glory of Heracles, Dragon Force II, Dark Half, Beyond Oasis, Psi-O-Blade, Arabian Nights, and so much more. What a loss. Rest in peace.

Astrophotographer Adam (AJ) Smadi caught this image a few hours ago from Washington state. A thin crescent Moon, sunlight illuminating the rugged lunar surface. And 2,400 times farther away—and on the other side of the Sun—mighty Jupiter, and its moons Io (left) and Ganymede (right).

Anyway, every time the remake talks come back up, I have to replug that I talked to a bunch of developers making remakes. Still one of the things I'm most proud of doing to this day. An entire package put together concepted, researched, and put together entirely by myself www.inverse.com/remade

inverse.comRemadeFrom remakes of games like Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy, to remasters of Star Wars and System Shock, the gaming space is filled with old, forgotten titles that have been brought to life for new gene...

When a film is rereleased on a new medium in a (commercial) act of ‘cultural preservation,’ it’s transferred to that format with greater detail that takes advantage of sharper display technology, not redesigned from the ground up with a different script and cast.

Outside of 4k remasters (which in most cases are a restoration of detail that was already captured on film), we simply accept that old movies just look like that, even animated movies. Nobody is remaking Toy Story every time there's a leap in tech. We just watch that movie. Why are games different?

In the unusual event that its substance or aesthetic is significantly changed via a new cut or color grade, it’s controversial. Even when the original director has supervised those alterations! But far more dramatic, fundamental changes are the normal way videogames get revived for new generations.

The more loot that a looter shooter or ARPG showers me with, the less I like it. A small amount of meaningful loot is so much better than heaps I have to sift through to try and spot something good (based on criteria I'm making up and unsure of, no less). Thousands of tedious micro-decisions.

Maybe this is a hidden benefit to the extraction genre. We always focus on the tension created by the stakes of losing your stuff, but the flip side is that you just use what you find without having to decide for every little thing whether you should hoard it forever. Because you can’t.

I came back to The Division 2 and am finishing this season, and the hundreds of caches I'm dealing with, each containing like 3 to 7 items depending on their type, is exhausting. Thinking about going through and marking stuff as trash has made me want to stop playing. Better ways to spend my time.

I *love* a thinky, well-written piece that I really disagree with, because it makes me examine my own feelings and assumptions to see *why* I disagree, and to think more.

I don’t want to pick on this person, this is just a really illustrative reply. something happened along the way where arguing from a place of conviction—believing that your opinion is correct — is received as prescriptive, an imposition. This is not a great development, imo

Okay, well, I see we're back to requiring everything written online to tack on "in my opinion" just to prevent misunderstandings from people who think game journalists are somehow trying to make pronouncements with all the authority of a monarch.

Like, did Ocarina of Time "automate" jumping in ways hostile to player experience or was it simply not interested in being a platformer/wanted to focus on other parts of its systems? And if the latter, why can't Vampire Survivors be a game about exploring Diablo's build path w/o ten billion clicks?

One reason why Batman: The Animated Series has had such lasting power is that it's very focused on what the villain wants. Not just in terms of the plot or the scheme, but how it reflects their innermost desires. The motivation has to come from some emotional well that the audience can relate to.

Daniel Dockery@dandock.bsky.social

Poison Ivy starts a family in "House & Garden," a cool little horror tale that weaves deftly between creepiness and tragedy. One of the best examples of the fact that most BTAS villains didn't seek to destroy the world, but rather create the perfect one for themselves.
