I’m not a political journalist, so was gladly surprised at the community I found here last night. To Americans anxious about the upcoming elections, a key thing we learned in Brazil that might help you: DO NOT engage with the far-right online. Don’t share rage bait. Amplify your people. Ignore them.

I guaran-damn-tee you this is going to be used on a protester within 6 months. Mark your calendars.
Glad to see CNN reporting on this. @jimacosta.bsky.social and I raised concerns about DHS potentially using a military-grade “heat ray.” After 20+ years in national security, I find this deeply troubling. A weapon designed to inflict intense pain. Against civilians? Why does DHS need this?

If you use AI-produced writing in humanities scholarship you are dead to me. How I evaluate that kind of writing is by crossing you off my list,
Opinion: If AI is now part of academic writing, what should institutions actually evaluate? This essay argues that analytical writing should be judged by evidence, structure, argument, and accountability not by guesses about how each sentence was produced. https://chroni.cl/4eDRdjg

They know this is beyond the pale otherwise they'd be bragging about it on Twitter and Fox & Friends.

Have to be clear just how dangerous this is. If it continues, it effectively removes constitutional rights from an entire class of people. Imagine you had to fear that if you criticize the regime, any error on paperwork filled out by your family decades ago could be used to strip your citizenship.
KRISTI NOEM: I'm confident Ilhan Omar will finally be held accountable for her crimes? BENNY JOHNSON: What are those crimes? NOEM: When people apply to come to this country, if you go back and find that anything could be wrong or misrepresented, that's when it voids or cancels their citizenship

Show me a smart device that has the 96GB of RAM required to run a barely decent LLM, and I'll just rip it out and do something useful with it. Also, at current prices, that much RAM would cost approximately one (1) used car.
Anthropic warns AI could 'self-replicate' across smart home devices, become ‘challenging’ to shut down

If national Democrats won't do it, we can. X OFF. Until every vote is counted, get your news somewhere other than X. Then ask the people running for office to publish it somewhere else too.
I ask again, why are national Dems letting Elon "quietly" fund these races? We have two test cases. 2024 when Dems didn't make his money an issue. And 2025 Wisconsin, where they did. Guess which time they won by double digits?

This is a great era if you're a terrible owner and a terrible era if you enjoy great basketball League is better off in the long run with fewer excellent teams with sustained success. Is anyone going to wax nostalgic about the 2021 Bucks or the 2023 Nuggets a decade from now like Jordan's Bulls? 😂
What happens when your favorite player gets traded? When title teams get broken up? When nothing in the NBA feels permanent? Wrote a few words on what the NBA has lost in this era of uber-parity:

Beyond the horrifying reality that a hospital is trying to "clear the pentobarbital from [Christa Pike's] system" currently, the litigation over Tennessee's actions this week will shine a very clear light on the many, many reasons why governments should not be trusted with killing their citizens.
Story here. Attorneys say Pike is unconscious, on a ventilator and that both of her arms were “swollen, burned, and blistered” upon her arrival at the hospital Wednesday night. nashvillebanner.com/2026/10/02/c...
