It’s bad enough that Gavin Newsom opposes California’s Prop 40. But he also supports Prop 42, a billionaire-backed poison pill that would cancel out Prop 40 entirely and make it impossible to enact future wealth taxes. It’s clear whose side he’s on. Remember this in 2028.

Proposing analog to,”racism can explain every weird thing in America” is, “women are busy working for money is the secret reason everything we miss about a society is now dying.”

Jess Calarco@jessicacalarco.com

This article offers half a dozen reasons why people have stopped having friends and family over, but it ignores the fact that the women who planned parties and kept homes tidy enough for unplanned guests are now working for pay full-time (usually more than 9-5). www.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle...

A phenomenal moment in the Senate. Eric Schmitt, R-Mo., claims he has evidence Jack Smith went to a HAWKS game in Atlanta. Smith denies it. Schmitt declares he has busted Jack Smith for perjury. Smith, vexed, says he went to HAWKEYES game in Maryland. WATCH IN FULL, UNINTERRUPTED

Hey, ProPublica reporter Jake Pearson here. I’m taking over the account to tell you about my new story. For months, I posed as a problem gambler on DraftKings to test the company's "responsible gaming" safeguards. Spoiler alert: They made me a VIP — and I lost $10K. Here's how it all went down. 🧵

underrated part of El-Sayed’s messaging strategy seems to be shaming journalists who ask dumb questions that play into right-wing frames. you can’t answer these in a way that satisfies them, but you can make it embarrassing enough that you impose a toll on asking.

it’s wild that the heritage foundation wrote in text that the assault on trans woman particularly in sports is their first step in their efforts to completely abolish all Title IX protections and liberals still don’t believe it’s about more than trans women in sports

FWIW I don’t think that AI is an existential threat, nor on track to become one. I do however think that the leaders of the biggest AI companies, AI’s strongest boosters, and some of the folks who are most adept at using it to exploit others are actively hastening along OTHER existential threats.

if a voter hates trans people so much they are basing their vote on it, they are going to vote republican 100% of the time. there is literally nothing you can do or say to change that

If you're trying to propose to people with trans children in their lives that their lives are a worthwhile sacrifice for other Democratic priorities, consider whether you'd be convinced that your children should be sacrificed for the greater good of someone else's family.

I know this is a common belief, but it’s not true. If people went anti-vaxx/MAHA because they were excluded from the medical establishment, we would see sky-high rates among poor people, minorities and the uninsured. We don’t.

We are deeply angered to see this deceptive ad being plastered to sign posts around San Francisco. This ad is intended to confuse voters -- and it's because supporters of Measure G can’t win without hiding the fact that they want to take away our city’s coastal park and promenade.

What do you do when you've launched a moral panic about transgender athletes in the WNBA, but there has never been an active trans player in the league? Simple: you start a conspiracy theory about every single woman on the court.

wired.comThere Are No Trans Women in the WNBA, so Right-Wingers Are Making Some UpAs culture warriors continue to stoke the flames of a gender panic in professional sports, wild conspiracy theories are coming into play.

If players in the W didn’t already disagree with Sophie Cunningham about her comments about trans women in sports, how many of them must despise how she turned the WNBA into a political circus and battleground for conservatives to interrupt their game when the league is hot?

Every conversation about bike lanes is like: "Car crashes kill a huge number of people every day, including pedestrians, cyclists, & car occupants. Good bike infrastructure has been shown to make everyone safer (& doesn't increase congestion)." "But sometimes cyclists break rules & hit people!"

lisal.bsky.social reposted

[redacted person who does not know whose mentions they wandered into]: In my city, the cyclists are so entitled, they act like they own the roads. Me: LET THE BIKES OWN THE ROADS. THE BIKES ARE FAR LESS DANGEROUS AND POLLUTING BY ABSOLUTELY EVERY MEASURE. MAKE THE CARS PAY TOLLS TO THE CYCLISTS.

How is this fascinating though? These people want the best for themselves, they just want everyone else to suffer. This has been the pattern, not the exception.

Peter Sagal@petersagal.bsky.social

Here’s an analogy: I thought it was fascinating to find out from Fauci’s diary that Katie Miller (and, thus, her husband) relied on Fauci’s advice and counsel during her COVID-era pregnancy. Tells me something interesting about her, without excusing her for what else she and he have said since.
